You! I have no idea how you manage to fish, film and keep the picture steady in a little aluminum boat... That's some multi-tasking right there...

Hey, ummmm, where'd you buy that scale at? I'm thinking I need one of those... :)

Good fish!

It's my father in law's scale but I do like the way it weighs them that is for sure!!!! It was 19" on the board.

Where's the best place to find a mess of smallmouth around here? Would love to go to a lake and catch a few. With my scale I may be able to catch a few 5lbers!!!!! :eyebrows: :eyebrows:

Melvern is the closest place to KC with lots of good smallmouth. Milford, Wilson, and Glen Elder are all good options too if you're willing to drive further. Wyandotte is the only lake that is really close that has smallmouth. All of them have fish over 5lbs too.

Thank you!!! I will get with my father in law and see what we can come up with. Are any of these good to fish with these temps we are stuck with? Any tips or honey holes you care to share?

One of the other guys on here had one of the best days I've ever heard of anyone having out there 2 weeks ago despite the heat, caught them up shallow too.

Tough to beat a shakeyhead this time of year, or a small craw colored tube. I usually do my best on flat rock points, usually in surprisingly shallow water, less than 8' most of the time.

Coffey County Lake is another good smallmouth lake. Be careful if it is windy, that lake can be rough. Haven't been there for years, I need to get back down there when the weather cools down.

That lake stumps me almost every time I go down there. I have a couple things I'd like to try down there that I think would work that work well on Melvern most everytime. I don't ever fish it anytime other than during the winter so that may have something to do with it though. Make sure to check the forecasted wind speed and add about 5-7mph to whatever they say it's going to be. If they say anything over 10mph I don't bother going because they'll probably page you off before the end of the day. Plus you have to wear your life jacket the entire time you're on the water so make sure you have an inflatable or it gets pretty uncomfortable pretty fast. I know there's good smallmouth in there but I could count all of them I've caught from my 6-8 trips on two hands and nothing bigger than 2 pounds.

I have caught a couple 3# there a few years ago. But you gotta be careful of the wind it can get really bad quick. Life jackets are a PIA so having an inflateable is a goood thing.

I fished there with my father and a guide (Clyde the Guide) this spring and we did fairly well. Caught a ton of large crappie (12"+) and quite a few smallmouth. Mainly we focused on submerged roadbeds and humps about 10' deep. Coffey County also has quite a few decent wipers in it if you get lucky.

Well I just got a new deep cranking rig (Mojo 7' 8" Big Crankster rod with a 5.2 Pro Qualifier). Hadn't had a chance to use it at all because I've been working 12 hour days all week so I left for a work about 20 minutes early and stopped by Olathe and made a couple casts off the dam. Couldn't fish a deep runner because I was on the bank so I put a big Strike King 4S squarebill on it. Rod and reel both felt nice and I even managed to catch a skinny 16 incher while I was there :) Think I'm really going to like it and hopefully it will help me get better at fishing deep crankbaits.

OK, good to go. Trailer all rewelded, better than new. Just need to reinstall the marker lights on the rear X member and ready to go fishing! Glad I have a good friend with the equipment, He wouldn't take any $$, guess I owe him a few lunches.

Lucky you! My wife's family owns a trailer supply company (Jayhawk Camper Sales in Bonner Springs) so I got a big discount on the parts I had to get to fix my trailer thankfully. That stuff gets expensive really quick! If he fishes I'd say take him on a trip or two to pay him back :)

He's a good friend and we do fish together occasionally, actually he used to work for me before I retired. He is one of the group that goes to Canada with me every June.

We didn't need much in parts, just some scrap plate steel. biggest thing was welder and skill to use it.

I'm glad my trailer is solid cause my truck sure has been giving me enough problems lately, was gonna go thursday after the rain but I finally admitted to myself that my brakes were too dangerous to to tow the boat fishing... You woulda thought the time I went to bourbon county would have convinced me: I was flying down that last big hill, lake dead ahead and when i went to hit the brakes, it just when PHHHHHSSSSHH and I had no stopping power at all. Nope, I just learned how to roll to a stop and kept on Bassin' lol.

Anyways Thursday the brake reservoir was low so i knew i had a fluid leak and I wasted a perfectly good day fishing putting new front calipers and bleeding the system... With those back to tip-top I was feeling rather entitled on Friday, so I went out to Perry and worked her over pretty good: 12 hours on the water. Once again, I shoulda got out earlier, morning is by far the best, there was a suprising afternoon bite around 3 though... The lake is easily a foot lower than it was in spring so alot of the good spring spots are worthless now, but it turned out to be not a bad day, after all the high was only 96, fish were hitting a moving bait somewhat. Rattle trap did good for me, plastics on a football jig were doing well till I ran out of em. Since all the fish had moved since last time I went I spent alot of time figuring out where they weren't... again I didnt really care though, just felt so good to be out there again after all this heat.

Did you string it up with Floro? That stretchy mono sure is nice for not ripping the hooks from their mouth but get it too far away you can't feel anything... I have a feeling your wanting to cast FAR with that thing...

I went with P-line C21 copolymer. I don't think it stretches quite as bad as mono and that stuff is crazy strong!

I bet that big drum had your hopes up didn't it? I caught one about that size on a deep running crankbait out there a couple years ago and I thought I had a monster until I saw it. It never rolled like they normally do, just bulldogged around like a big mama bass.

I got a deep cranking set up this year too. Haven't used it too much yet either. Are there any good deep cranking lakes around here? Seems like everyone I talk to about bassin around KS doesn't think you need to spend much time fishing any deeper than 10 ft...

Honestly I'm not really sure if there are any with a truly good deep cranking bite that you can just set up on a hump or ledge and catch them all day. I know a couple smaller lakes with a pretty decent deep cranking bite around here (Pleasanton City Lake East, Olathe Lake, Lake Fort Scott, Bourban State Lake, Wyandotte, and Leavenworth are best for me). There's a couple places in Miami that seem like they should be good deep cranking spots but I just can't seem to get them to hit. I can catch them on a shakeyhead or C-rig but not a deep crank. A lot of the time I'm not fishing water deeper than 10', probably why I like baits like a series 5 or medium sized fat free shad, they get to the bottom and bounce around but don't dig a trench. Still, even those baits were a little too much for my regular glass cranking rod. The little lake I got access to in KCK is a pretty good deep cranking lake, so is Lake Quivira when I get to fish it. I'll also get to use it when I make my trips to Table Rock, Lake of the Ozarks, Pomme, Bull Shoals, and any of those other lakes that I drive the few hours to because the fishing is so much better than the lakes around here.

Had a similar deal when I blew a brake wheel cylinder while towing the boat.......Kinda freaky using the parking brake to stop with. But I limped her home and made the needed repairs.

Anyone every fish Heritage Park Lake for bass? I tried to fish it once from the bank and only managed a couple superdinks under 10". I didn't expect much because JOCO parks can't seem to figure out how to get any kind of fishable population of bass in any of it's lakes but I thought maybe it would be like Kill Creek that I think is just out there far enough that it doesn't get a ton of pressure and keeps it decent. I know it has a small ramp I could put my 12' john boat in there from but just looking for any info so I might know if it's even worth my time?

Also found Paola Lake off Cedar Niles just north of 287th St which is just south of Hillsdale. This is a different lake from Miola that's actually in the city of Paola. Can't find anything to say whether its public or private. Doesn't have a boat ramp it doesn't look like but I could get my john boat in it since the road goes right across the dam. Looks like it has a good amount of trees around almost the entire lake with some maybe even in the water, but it has houses at a couple points on the lake too.

Maybe a little taller seat pole and it would be perfect !

It's still a great drum fishery this time of year! I bet it felt like bath water though! I'm probably down for a week or two, my motor was running like crap last night, loud and would barely get on plane and lots of vibration. Hopefully it's not too expensive but if I know anything about boat repairs they don't make anything cheap for them :(

Its actually two pieces the umbrella and the bottom pole, I keep it down as far as it will go due to the fact that any real wind will fold it up like a news paper! If I had it all the way up it would be about six feet high.

Think good thoughts on the motor!!!! I caught two catfish on deep diving cranks at Hillsdale just goofing around!
