Biggest bag this year ain't from Gardner though!

I said OUR BIGGEST BAG, aka DJ and I. Not our group.

Anyway, went to Lone Star Thursday and found a school of deep fish that produced almost 9 lbs in two back to back casts, and almost 15 lbs total in about 35 minutes. Biggest out of the bunch was 5 lbs. 3 oz. on a Buzzs Baitz DT6 bluegill pattern. Then I broke my crankbait rod.

Melvern guide trips over the weekend were good. No details provided for this spot of the interwebz anymore, unfortunately.

Lol! Don't worry I won't give it up either.  Plenty of bass pass fish willing to play on Saturday.

:P:P:P:P:P

Plenty of bass pass fish, definitely (+1 over 18). But Keith and I aren't gonna take the W this weekend with those. #18plus

Weather permitting, I have an open back seat for fishing the pre-front tomorrow evening at Miola, Middle Creek, or Gardner (never fished there before). I was thinking 5:30 at the ramp. Let me know.

Miola or Gardner. Don't bother with Middle Creek.

@SuperFluke and @Thefrog22 said they caught a lot of fish at middle Creek, just didn't find the size.

I've had my struggles with Middle Creek... There's a fair amount of good looking water, but I just haven't found the quality bites yet.

Ended up a solo trip so decided to give Gardner a chance.
I spent a lot of time on the trolling motor exploring and "junk fishing with intent"- ended up finding fish in and around where coontail patches met other cover with square bills and senkos. In retrospect I probably needed to slow down and fish those spots harder with a senko split shot/swimming senko. Really wanted to find fish on a buzzbait, but only caught one short on a buzz. Given the weather and it being a new lake to me, it was very hard to put down a winding bait.WT ~78-79.

Lake X is still hopping. Had to add a trailer hook to my buzzbait this trip. It was a weird deal, all but about 2 fish I caught were hooked outside the mouth in the cheek. I'm thinking they must have been going after the blade instead of the body of the bait. Resulted in lots and lots of missed fish. Even when I switched to a plopper 130, 3 bites, 3 misses. Caught 2 more on the Aventa, but I missed 4 other bites. Both of my first 2 keepers were follow up fish that ate a Senko after they missed my buzzbait.

My last keeper was also my biggest of they year so far. She smoked my buzzbait and never should have made it to the boat. All she had to do was stay down, but she spent all her time near the surface and I was able to work her past the maze of stumps and laydowns. 5 pounds 14 ounces, I tried twice to get her to go 6, but rang up the exact same both times. One of the few times I was really glad I had a trailer hook on.

Friday I had my mind made up to go back, but I got scared by the 2" of rain we'd gotten overnight, so I headed to Linn Valley instead. Right off the bat I stuck a 17" fish that went 2lb 11oz in some water willow, but I couldn't get that pattern going at all. I fished a Ned a lot and caught the appropriate sized fish to barely get a Ned in their mouths. Got onto some whites and schooling bass (largemouth and smallmouth), for awhile but they wouldn't connect on a topwater for some reason. Hooked a big bass under a dock on the Ned, pretty much at a standstill for several seconds before she slowly moved to the top. Water there is super clear, she was big, but it's impossible to tell from a distance and several feet under water. Hook just popped out, one of those ones you can't do anything about. I saw a drum fight? 2 of them spinning around and biting (gumming?) each other. Sight fished a 12.5 pound carp with my 5' ultralight and 4lb test, that was cool. Saw some GIANT gills and got a mongo redear on a hula stick, one of the longest I've ever caught, but it wasn't overly tall.

Hope no one has immediate plans for Melvern this week.

@Thefrog22 fished our long awaited two day EKB tournament Saturday and Sunday. After last weekend's awesome trip, my confidence was excellend. Then the storms rolled through Friday and couldn't have ruined the lake at a worse time. Lake was up probably 4 feet overnight Saturday, and then only got higher on Sunday. Main lake clarity wasn't too bad, TC was chocolate, but you account for the big winds all weekend and then everything mainlake was blown out by noon both days.

We weighed in 3 bass pass fish Saturday, and 1 Sunday. We caught so many 14s/14.5s like it was going out of style. Keith had a few come unbuttoned on Sunday that would have come back with us too. Not the Melvern we know and love, she broke my heart. I'll be back next weekend with double guide trips Sat and Sun, so hopefully it'll settle down some by then. The fish are slowly but surely getting fatter though, spitting up both shad and craws. Only a matter of a few weeks before it really pops off.

All I want is to find the original Elite Tech Smallmouth spinning rod. Like, so badly. Why I never bought one when I even remotely had the chance is beyond me. They aren't for sale anywhere even used, ever because everyone knows how awesome they are/were.

I don't understand what is going on with that lake. Looking back at pictures and videos from last year, it had already popped off well over a month ago by this time last year. I'm hoping it's the dirty water and not the ridiculous amount of pressure that lake has been getting. I'd hate to see it go the way that Wilson has.

Yup Coty and I put back to back 100 fish days two weekends in a row.  I think it's dirty and high.  The fish are not real aggressive right now, slapping at the BS instead of eating it with authority.  Any finesse technique is worthless since they can't see the bait. There are still fish to be caught in the 15" to 17" range.

I don't either. My Facebook On This Day deal is always showing me September slam days from Vern. @conorsixtakc and I were having banner days in mid August even. I don't think it's succumbing to the pressure-just gotta let the water level and clarity settle down and get out of the transition period and I think she'll be back on.

It is dirty and high. They were aggressive last week, we were catching topwater fish until almost noon, and then still some around quitting time. And guess what, a few of the bass pass fish we weighed this weekend were hot on a shakyhead bite. Wouldn't touch a tube.

I haven't seen vern since last year. Sounds like I haven't missed much. I'm dieing for the smallmouth bite. A double digit this weekend would make it feel better though...

I bet the lurkers in here were wondering where everyone went. Surely none of them could have been fishing without any detailed reports.

Ha! I've been "lurking" on this thread for a few months now, and I thought that was funny! I had to create an account just to chime in. Seriously though, thanks to all for all of the info and advice on these boards. I will do my best to chime in when I get a chance!
