I worked the docks hard in the morning using a black and blue jig with a plastic trailer but just could not get enough bites to figure much out, I fished them a little more after the sun come up and could not get bit at all.   Tried lots of different plastics and jigs of different sizes and trailers, (all plastic)  with not much success.    The lake fished tough for us all, best pattern we could develop was fishing off the dam in about 18-20 ft of water and casting to the dam with senkos.      No big fish but several 1-2lb smallmouth.

Count the rocks with your jigs, never let it leave the bottom.

Thanks for the advice, we will give it another shot once the water cools a little.  Think we are going to try McPherson SFL next week, have been hearing some good things happening there.  Also been a good white bass and hybrid bite at Cheney.

I have never had much luck out there in the fall but it's possible I've never timed it right. Seems like I'm always post cold front conditions in the fall out there.

Dragging a jig is the best big fish deal out there for me. It seems like this time of year they'll be on one of the front corners, or dead center off the front of the docks. Never had much luck skipping under docks or along the sides this time of year. Dragging a jig on the drop off the dam is good for bigger smallies too.

All Wabaunsee jig fish from the last couple years. I don't get out there very often and may not at all now that it's so much further away.

Nice fish, would have liked to run into a few of those.   I will have a much better plan for the next time I fish there.   Thanks for all the help.

Scheels has them on sale sometimes for  $65 or $70

I wound up just opting for the mesh top type of PFD for $30 at Academy. Still wound up sweating a lot but at least it didn't have the bulk and "pinch points" and range of motion restrictions of the vests without the mesh top.

I have two of those that I have for clients in the boat. They're not bad.

Luckily I was mostly finished. Got a quick shake in and slammed the door just in time to set the hook. Glad I was wearing running shorts. A button and zipper would have just made things complicated.

I like seeing my home waters on here, DG Co, but I simply cannot figure that lake out in summer from shore. I'm dumbfounded. I can slay them all spring on swim jigs and Finesse presentations, but short of fishing 4" worms on a T Rig and catching 8" bass, I can't buy a big bite now.

Any particular structure to key on or is the abundant grass the key?

I watched a guy catch a few bigger fish around the grass at DoCo with a walking topwater on thursday night.

We caught most of our fish on the outside edges of the grass or in deep brush offshore. Did catch a few on a frog in the grass but couldn't get a consistent bite going. So most of the fish we caught would be tough to get to from shore.

That confirms my suspicions that this lake is more of an offshore affair in summer. Oh well. I did catch one last week at Baldwin City Lake on a swim jig just dinking around.

Doco is more of an area lake for me in the summer. I will fish large areas of unproductive water, then hit an area they're loaded up. The areas around the piers always produces fish, certain ones being better than others. Both ends of the dam usually have fish, the east boat ramp always had fish on it, there's lots of brush you can reach from the bank that hold fish. A lot of places that are productive near the shoreline don't have shoreline access though.

Hello Everyone,

New to fishing because my son wanted to try it out so I am trying to learn enough to stay ahead of him!  Just wanted to say hello because I will probably be bugging you all for tips soon enough!  Our first day fishing was last Saturday.  So far his count is 5 bluegill and I have a bluegill and 5 little bass to my name.

We have a couple little ponds/lakes within walking distance of our house so it is easy to pop down and try new stuff.  He is on a mickey mouse pole with safety bobbers and hot dogs (he is 3).  I caught a couple on a texas rigged senko and I caught 3 last night with a small crankbait.

I just bought a pflueger spinning combo from bass pro.  I tried to spend good money on nicer stuff, but they kept pushing this rod so I bought it to learn (I already want a bait cast setup).  So far so good, but if there are any threads that I should read as a beginner or tips you have for the KC area I am open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Took the yak over to Critzer Lake from 4-8ish yesterday.  There was lots of bait fish running around, carp were splashing often, the banks and terrain were pretty cool looking.  At first i was contemplating whether to use braid because its such a f-ing jungle but instead just switched out to a diff rod bc the water looked pretty clear.   Anyway the N-west side was productive for me, i didn't go back where it starts bending to the SW ( saw about 50 buzzards hanging around in the trees back in there was crazy ) but started there and kinda worked my way along the N shore. IF i could get a cast to banks edge whether rock or tall grass it was on! I got in the thick of it, had a few cuss-ups when my one pole not in the water would get hung up. i probably caught around 11 with the bigger ones being close to 3lb.  I had more success with a T-rigged twin skirted grub or the 4 1/4" stick worm both blk red flaked. While spot checking around,  i missed what felt like a decent one on the way in towards the SE corner along the channel just tossing around to the spread trees letting it drop.  It was fun and man it was just good to be on the water and be exploring.   Anyone else have any tips recently for what worked for them there.

Went to Mound city lake or the one thats a few blocks from Critzer this evening.  Got in at 6pm fished till about 8:30 caught two. Didn't have much time fished the west side caught the bigger 2lb off a wooly hawgtail and a smaller one using a lizard. Soft hits.  I guessed it be cooler on that side. Lots of weeds or hydrilla all over. Tried using a chatter bait and the hawgtail along the north end riprap but kept getting hung-up, wasn't my night.  Saw a couple guys out there catching some big catfish.

Anyone should be able to put a tip on the rod for you, it does not really take any special skills. I can even do it.

Replacing a tip is very easy but if you're not comfortable doing it you can take it to MondoTackle and drop it off. He has a guy that does it for pretty cheap.

Fished Middle Creek Tuesday and Miola Wednesday.

Middle Creek continues to be a bit of a struggle for me, I ended up with one about 15" off of the dam after fishing the road bed and channel swing shorelines and adjacent timber. The rocks on the south side of the dam always look so good, but I still have yet to raise a fish out of them.

Thanks to everyone that supplied tips on Miola. I was fishing with a co-worker and was limited to picking and nibbling around the edges a bit. We still managed to pull some out of the heavy stuff flipping beavers along the west shorelines with a few fish on spinnerbaits mixed in. I think I need to spend a solid trip out on the east end of the lake up against that weedgrowth.
