Perry is almost always pretty muddy. Even at it's best you might get 2 or 3 feet of visibility. Dark colored baits that move slow are almost always the key for me out there.

retro, I've had a couple of really, really good days with a zell pop this spring already and have caught some one a buzzbait and a frog too. I'm confident I would have broken the 100 fish mark at Miami Monday if I would have just stuck with a Zell Pop, they were hitting it almost every cast but the size was not there. Plus I was having way too much fun smacking them around with a swimbait :eyebrows: It's pretty awesome when you're tossing a 5" swimbait and a fish eats it so deep you can't even see the thing anymore.

Where did you fish on Miami? i mainly just go in and out of the pockets and fish the shores and then the west bank that whole long bank. I have never tried fishing in the middle yet but i am going to as it gets hotter.

The piers, across the dam, and then the few piers on the east side were our best areas. The water at the north end was extremly clear for that lake, we could see bottom all across there and there was no sign of any life, not a bite on anything we fished. The east bank with all the laydowns and smaller standing trees was very tough also. We did pretty well on the laydowns in the middle. Don't be fooled by the fact that those trees are in the middle, it's only about 4-6 feet deep out there and fish hold out there all the time. We usually flip the trees and then fan cast cranks or spinnerbaits on the flats while we motor to the next tree and pick up a lot of roaming fish doing that.

I forgot to mention, we caught 2 white bass last time we were on Miami? Anybody else ever caught one? I'm sure they swam in there when the river was flooded but I've just never caught one and was wondering if I'm the only one.

I'll be chasing smallies, walleyes, and wipers for the next 3 days at Milford with the old man. Hopefully when we get back I'll have some good stories/pictures to share :eyebrows:

The very last peir on the northeast side is where we caught 6 fish in 6 cast we got all the way up in the north and saw quite a few nice size fish but they wouldn't hit.

And yes this year my dad and i have caught 7 white bass out there and we thought it was weird so we asked a guy we see there all the time and he said they dumped about 2000 white bass in there?

Heading out to Watkins Mill this morning. Hoping the fish are biting like they were last week!!

Finally made it to Perry on Saturday.

Nice lake with lots of rock! Didn't catch a lot of bass, but the ones I did catch seemed really healthy. Hooked into a 5lb+ first thing in the morning on a DT10, but she jumped off before she was suppose to! Mainly just covered water with a crankbait today. Caught lots of saugeye, 1 catfish, many whites/hybrids, too many drum, foul hooked a carp, and even one 15" smallie! Biggest bass came around the old docks in Rock Creek - 17.5" LM.

Fun day and look forward to going again.

Good deal, glad you liked it and got into some action all day, with that storm brewing i bet they were hungry. Sounds like you got a little of everything for sure. Were you cranking with a rattle mostly or pull fish off of a silent crankbait too?

Blue: That Zell Pop looks like a really well made lure for sure. I'm not sure i'm ready to justify spending $10 on a lure but if i do it will be on something hard to lose like a topwater. I picked up my first chatterbait this weekend in tulsa at basspro and think i have a basic popper that looks like the zell somewhere. I'll see if i can try to convince em to hit on just every other cast with one of those I suppose :)

Dad and I got back from fishing Milford the last 3 days around 5 today. Wind sucked all 3 days like it usually does out there. Dad did pretty good with the trolling motor but it's a little tougher to drive one of the elecric control motors like his boat has so I did my best to be patient while each time we were spinning circles on the lake :laugh5: This is more of a walleye trip than bass but I can't go to that lake and not fish for them a little bit, plus the walleye were TOUGH!

101_1489.jpg

My biggest smallie of the trip, 17" and almost 3lbs.

101_1492.jpg

Dad getting in on the action.

101_1493.jpg

A solid spinnerbait smallie that just crushed it. Unfortunately I had just lost one that was well over 4 a few cast before catching this one so I wasn't quite as happy as I would have been :cry3:

101_1494.jpg

We got a tip from a guy at the dock by the dam that was training his retriever that guys have been catching lots of walleye in Farnum Creek. We had a few hours left in the day and it's only a 5 minute drive by road instead of 30 minutes by boat so we loaded up and made the move. Took a minute to find the fish but when we did we found everything. The wipers started blowing up behind us and I stuck a solid one on light spinning tackle that took me for a ride! The bait was way down there!

101_1495.jpg

22" and 5lbs

101_1497.jpg

We weren't catching the numbers of walleyes the guy told us about but we did catch some fish. Up to this point we had caught a grand total of 1 short walleye in almost 2 days fishing. We ended the night with 4 18" keepers out of 9 fish. Biggest was 20.5".

101_1498.jpg

We went back to the same area the next day and the catfish had taken over! I was having fun catching blues and channels on a light spinning rod casting a gulp minnow but dad wanted walleye. I suggested an area so we made the move. Again it took us awhile to relocate them but once we got to the specific spot I thought they would be we found a few more. Today we had 3 keepers out of 7 fish with a 19.5" fish being the biggest.

101_1501.jpg

It was a good time minus that wind and me almost having a rod jerked out of the boat and then throwing the same one out of the boat on the hookset :dazed-7: Thankfully I got it back and caught the fish that caused the whole mess in the first place :respect-059: It was a multispecies weekend for sure we caught largemouth, smallmouth, whites, wipers, crappies, bluegills, green sunfish, pumpkinseed, channel cats, blue cats, drum, and carp.

Retro - I was throwing a Rapala DT10, which doesn't have rattles. I did throw a silent square bill for a bit, but no takers on it. I only caught a couple bass on the crank, so I'm sure something else would have worked better, but I was just trying to cover water and take a look at the lake.

For those that fish the marina areas, do you actually fish the stalls or do you concentrate on the rip rap more?

Anyone planning on going to Perry this coming Saturday? I'm thinking about it, but not sure yet...

I rarely fish the stalls except the last few towards the bank and instead focus mainly on the walkways and rip rap. I'll probably be on Perry Monday, all you guys talking about it has given me the itch to go out there.

Do you guys know of any tournaments around the kc area? or even in Missouri i have been wanting to start tourneys but just haven't heard of that many around here

http://www.burtonsbaitandtackle.com/

They have a Thursday night and Saturday tournament at Smithville lake put on by Burton's Bait.

Also some around the Blue Springs area. Check the outdoor section of the kansas city star. They have a section titled tournament trail. Shows when and where tourneys are and results from past tourneys.

You might look into one of the local clubs. Most fish a few tournaments in KS and then get to the good lakes in MO and even Grand Lake in OK. It's a good way to meet others and fish new lakes.

So awhile back there was talk of a get together.

Anyone what to get something going the weekend of June 8-10? Perry, Milford, Melvern? Tent camp or look into getting a cabin of some sorts?

How was the Mill? I've been meaning to get over there, but haven't yet.

Last couple of weeks, I've been hitting Smithville quite a bit with the usual "not much" success. That lake looks so fishy, but I just can't seem to catch many fish at that place. I can never establish a pattern at Smithville. Most of my fish are on plastics with hardly any fish on reaction baits. It's a bummer because I'm practically 10 minutes from the ramp.

Also went up to Mozingo two weeks back and caught a ton of fish, mostly 13"-14' fish with 8 or 9 nice keepers. Fish are usually right on the edge of the grass at Mozingo.

We had some decent luck at Watkins Mill last weekend. Well, I should say my father in law did as he put on a clinic catching fish. Most of them were shorts but still fun. We were using 10" plastic worms fishing the grass that seems to go all the way around it. 2 weeks ago fishing there with a wacky rigged senko style bait we caught a ton and 4 3-4lbers.

We have been wanting to go to Smithville, but we never seem to do any good there!!!!

Several lakes have Monday or Wednesday night tournaments. Wyandotte co, Hillsdale, Smithville, Longview, and I believe Jacomo and Blue Springs all have evening tournaments if you're looking to stay close. Lots of bass clubs in the area as long as you're just looking for the competition and not winning any money. I fished the BASS weekend series one year and had a lot of fun doing that and made a little money too.

So awhile back there was talk of a get together.

I could be there the 10th if ti was Perry or Melvern, Milford is a little far for a day trip.

I'm headed to Mozingo during the week next week...never been there. Can anyone tell me how the boater fee works? How much is it? Is there a self-registration, or do I have to purchase it (and wait) from a vendor or a park office? Also, are any of the ramps any better or worse than any other? Thanks so much!

It's $8 a day according to their website. Last time I was there we bought them from Big Bird's Bait and Tackle. They're open at 6am on weekends, 7am on weekdays. Last time I went they give you a sticker and I don't believe there was a way to self pay at the ramp. I've always used the main ramp about mid way up the lake as it's a very nice ramp and you never touch gravel. It's a fun lake with lots of standing timber, brushpiles, and grass. However it gets lots of pressure so it can be tough. Get there early because it usually has a much better bite before 10am than the rest of the day and can have a really good topwater bite early.

Regarding Mozingo... yep it's 8.00 per day. We got there at 5:45 am two weeks ago and the man was in his house collecting the ramp fee as you pulled into the park. Still a sticker that you put on your boat. We put in at the main ramp (south end of the lake). My luck is the opposite of Bluebasser. We fished plastics in skinny water till 10 am and caught 9-10 shorts. After that we started throwing 1.5 squarebills the rest of the day till 4:30 pm. Hitting points we ended the day with 70 fish, with about 8-9 keepers. I think we had 4 over 3lbs with the biggest at 3.12. We were offshore making long cast to the edge of the grass.

I'll be up there again this Sat.

Smithville was slow again last night. Just a couple of shorts on shakey head. Can't figure that place out!

Planning on hitting the Mill tonight, hopefully goes well!

Let me know how you do at the Mill. We plan on going there this weekend.
