I think the fish at the local practice hole need more food or thinned out, they sure have the "big head, little body", look going on. Might have to dump some shiners in there or something. At any route, I caught several more yesterday, along with a few bull gills when I tried a little float-n-fly action.

Hey!

Heading out to Lone Star this weekend with the camper and my nephew. I do have a couple of kayaks I might bring along. Do we have any chance of getting on any Crappie from the banks or are they all suspended out deep over brush? Any tips / pointers would be much appreciated!

I'd say you are pretty spot on with the bait selection. I moved to Lee's Summit late last summer and fished James A Reed several times in the first few months with very few bass to speak of. I fished most of the lakes as well. Not the greatest bass fishing spot in my opinion. Especially during the warm weather months when it's getting pounded.

I did notice your profile said that Prairie Lea is your favorite lake. I have heard good things about it but have only been there once and I'm am usually boatless. I have fished what little bank access there is at Jacomo and had some decent outings. Not sure if you are in a boat or not and if you live near Lee's Summit but those 2 lakes are probably some of the better in the area from what I know.

only time i fish praire lea is when i have access to a boat. other than that its usually local ponds in LS or lone jack. But i would highly suggest going to james a reed and throwing a hollow body frog. There are some monstrous fish out there. I mainly do well at jack rabbit, cottontail, gopher, and bodark. tanglewood isnt bad either

You might as well leave your yaks at home. The only Crappie I've ever found consistently there are on the brush piles directly in front of the docks in the beach cove, so no need for a kayak. And they're all 8-9". Then again, I don't fish Lone Star for Crappie. That's just where I know they are, they are just all dinks for the most part.

I was wondering how the bass bite is from the bank at lonestar? I was planning on running down there saturday as well.

They were stacked up and suspended in the the middle of the dock cove the other day.

Thanks for the advice ONDREJKA, appreciate it man. Do you have a guiding biz? I think I may follow your page on FB, looks like the same profile pic that you have here. I'll have to book a trip with ya sometime!

What else do you go after this time of year on Lonestar? Is there a LM bite out there this time of year? I landed a few really nice bass out there last summer.

I do indeed. Would love to have you out.

The LMB bite right now is slow, as I'm sure you've read from a few of our posts that have been there in the past two weeks. It will pick up come March with warming water temps. I'll fish Lone Star all year, it's my own little home away from home in Lawrence. Myself as well as bluebasser have caught Wipers from 7 to 12 lbs. out there last spring. They'll show up and then disappear after a few weeks, nowhere to be found. But really I only fish Lone Star for Bass, as there are plenty.

You may be able to pick off a few small ones here and there along the accessible banks. If I were stuck on shore I would probably just wait until the water warms up when they get ready to bed up in the spring.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to go check it out once the grass mats up this spring.

Hi guys, new to the site. I'm sure some of you have probably seen me at some point walking the banks of the local lakes out here with my backpack. Anyway, went out to Lake olathe yesterday with my new toy, the deeper fish finder, and couldn't even mark bait fish. I fished some drops and places I thought might have something fish go by, but came up empty after about 6 hours. I walked most of the side opposite of the boat ramp, and some of the boat ramp side. I tried every lure amd rig imaginable, both the "common" cold water set ups, and even some faster moving lures. Have any of you guys had luck out there yet? If so, where are the fish holding? I'm still looking for my first one of the year.

Not a big piece of water but Oregon Trail Park has a nice pond that gives up decent sized bass. Celebration Park in Gardner gives up great numbers, just don't drink the water.

Welcome to Bass Resource. I've not fished Olathe this year, but usually can catch a few on a jerkbait in the area around the dam.  Good luck!

Wind was blowing like crazy and the water is still crazy cold but they are starting to turn on a little for me. Loving my new L.H. square bill in the pyromaniac color. So far it is the only thing they are hitting. The one yesterday was in about 3.5 ft of water and this one was literally sitting under a rock next to a retaining wall. The crankbait bounced off the rock and he slammed it when it came off the rock. He was in no more than 2 ft of water.

Had a pretty productive day on the water at La Cygne last Thursday. No monsters, but lots of fish to keep it interesting.

Welcome to the forum!

Olathe is a tough customer early in the year. I normally stay away until late March/early April, at least until the water temp is above 50. It's almost always pretty stained and that cold, muddy water is about as tough as it gets. I've caught quite a few off the dam at Gardner fishing from the bank early in the year. Douglas is a pretty sure bet, just fish along the edge of the piers towards the ends and you'll find some fish as well as the dam that will be loaded with fish soon, but they're almost all small. Prairie Center ponds are both pretty good, as is Mize or Lake Lenexa.
