Apparently there's an early season discount prices if you buy your fishing license now. I got $8 off my combo license  (of course I got gouged for more than that in inconvenience fees for doing it online), but if you have to buy then anyways, might as well save some money.

That so cute that you have to buy a license every year.....

So many ways to run with that and none of them that are allowed.

Trying not to make it a last minute thing like it usually is and with the cold weather I'm much more likely to be able to keep myself away from the lake and actually do stuff.

Plus the fish did not cooperate yesterday.  The only brown fish we saw was lost at the boat in the first 5 minutes on a mikey.  I think Chris jinxed us when he said we need to weigh some fish.

My clients are on the opposite side of the law compared to your clients.

Chris does need to weigh some fish. I'd love to see these 4 pound smallies he's always talking about catching at Wolf. I've fished there for almost 10 years now and have yet to see a smallie over 4 come out of Wolf. Tons of them in the 3 pound range, but other than one I had jump off last time that him and I fished together that might have gone 4, I've never seen any others that would have been close. Not many largemouth over 4 out of there for that matter.

He's talking 4's? He meant 3's. Although, the one I lost yesterday would have been pushing 4.  Guess my point is neither one of us care what our "best 5" weighs so we turn em loose and get back to fishing.

I know, I'm just giving him a hard time. I don't usually care either unless I'm really whacking some big fish. I know I'm not going to catch a 20 pound bag out there so I usually don't even worry about weighing any of them.

You can only catch so many 3.2lb largies out there before get tired of picking up the scale. Clones!

Little off topic here, but more interested in hearing your guys' thoughts vs posting to some other thread. For you fish & ski owners, and guys that have spent significant time fishing out of them - what are  your biggest likes and dislikes? Ownership's not probable this year for me, but potentially not too far out and trying to weigh different options.

Fiberglass is a must... thinking bass boat first, fish and ski second.

I bought a fish n ski this summer.  I have had it out probably 20 times or so.  Having never owned a bass boat it is hard to say how much more I would want a bass boat but I can give you my pros/cons.

PROS

It makes my wife happy.  She likes to ski/tube and grew up on lake.  It's great to take a couple friends out and everyone have a place to sit and what not. We plan on taking some family trips where I spend the morning fishing, and we spend the midday out on the lake with friends.

Windshields are nice when it is cold.

CONS

Lack of Rod Storage.  I would LOVE to have a big rod locker. I have broken several rods due to not having good places to put them.

Lack of Deck Room- Nearly impossible to fish 2 out of the front ever.

Limited area for mounting a large graph on the Dash (mainly because of the windshield)

** ribbing from "avid" fisherman that you bought a pleasure boat not a fishing boat (as long as you out fish them, what does if matter?)

I was looking at both Bass and Fish N Ski boats, and in my experience it was easier to find an old fish n ski in great shape.  The guy I bought it from owned it for 10 years and pretty much exclusively fished Clinton for Walleyes.  He did pull his daughter on a ski with it some too, but overall it was in WAY better shape than some of the 1996 Bass Boats I looked at.  (I was looking in a low price range $4-6k)

I love my boat and have no regrets buying it, but I understand why someone would advise an avid bass-fisherman against buying one.

Hope that helps

While I've never owned one myself, I have fished out of a friend's Ranger (whatever their fish-n-ski model is called).  It's a Ranger, so very nice boat and he obviously had the same general pros/cons that Micah stated (the happy wife and kids was a biggie).  However, I noticed a couple of additional cons that, as a bass boat owner, I would not be happy with (keep in mind I do not have a wife/kids to keep happy):

Windshield - while a windshield is very nice during cold weather, I felt that it sometimes got in the way when casting.

Front/Back Deck - I'm sure there's a nautical term for this but, where the hull rises above the front and rear fishing platforms is very high on fish/ski boats.  Obviously because they have to pull double duty as a sitting area, but I mean around twice as high as would be seen on the highest true bass boat, upwards of 8"-12".  This made things a little difficult when pitching/flipping as well as when working a topwater or jerkbait.

Also, the shallow access is diminished somewhat.  These are just some of my observations from fishing out of a fish/ski and the concept lends itself towards some compromises.  As the old saying goes, happy wife = happy life, so these cons are probably a small price to pay in the long run.

I grew up fishing out of an aluminum fish and ski and now my dad has a fiberglass one.  I did some searching like this last year.

Pros:

  • family time- room to fit more than 2-3 people
  • more stable/deeper decks- great with young kids/drunk people who are likely to fall in
  • handles rough water better than bass boat
  • dryer running across the lake
  • more capable of pulling people behind the boat, not saying a bass boat can't do it but if you like to wakeboard, a 6" wake isn't going to be a whole lot of fun.
  • wife would be happy because there are seats that swivel and somewhere to lie down other than the casting deck
  • not very fun to fish from back seat as you have about a 3' x 2' casting deck, similar to my boat haha.

Cons:

  • Slower
  • much heavier- need more towing capacity, lowers gas mileage in tow vehicle
  • less storage for fishing equipment (most of the time in my dad's boat we had tackle boxes scattered on the floor because the few storage compartments it had were always filled with extra life jackets)
  • Cannot go very shallow due to the deeper hull
  • not easy to flip/pitch out of due to the lack of deck room and lower deck
  • limited options in terms of manufacturers and sizes

Honestly for me, it comes down to this.  If I were to purchase a boat do I want to have the boat I want (bass boat), or something that my kids will enjoy?  I do not have kids currently so kids would be AT LEAST 6 years before they would enjoy a fish & ski.  I would get a bass boat if I were buying right now.

Hope that helps.

As KSadler said, happy wife, happy life.  I am lucky enough to have a wife who really enjoys fishing so that makes it easier to convince her.

Good points.  Should also say that some fish n ski's are WAY worse than others.
