After I got done biding another job I had about an hour to fish Osawatomie lake (closest lake to my house).

To my surprise I caught a nice fat 4.5#er !

Duuude, Sci-Fi pic! That's one hell of a catch too. Serious bass.

Atchison is a fun little lake. Lots and lots of dinks with a few bigger ones mixed in. The fishing piers on the south bank are usually good to run a crankbait along. The north side usually has a lot of milfoil that you should be able to run a crankbait over the top. My best baits out there are usually bandit 100's in tennessee shad or louisiana shad. There's lots of brushpiles that have been placed in the lake, don't be scared to run a crankbait into those trees, that's how I've caught some of my biggest fish out of there. Flipping the trees is hit or miss for me. Flipping green pumpkin baby brush hogs has been really good a few times up there. One of the best days I've had up there was this time of year on a Strike King Quad shad spinnerbait in white with silver blades.

I would also suggest checking out Warnock Lake while you're up there. It's also called Atchison city lake 23. It's in the town of Atchison and it's even smaller than the state lake. It's very shallow and weedy with several brushpiles but it has very good quality sized bass in it. I haven't caught anything as big as I have out of the state lake but I've caught way more 3-5 pounders out of it that I have from the state lake. It doesn't have the numbers in it either but it seems like when you get one it's usually pretty solid.

Thanks for getting back, I took off before dawn and couldn't get very good reception at all up there but yeah what a fun lake. Adrenaline gets going with that 2 mile stretch of gravel to get there. Those are serious hills for a tiny little gravel road...My rig is so heavy i'm trying to hit 50 going down those valleys just to keep it above 10 by the time i hit the peaks, back end is all bustin loose, trailer flying around...what a trip.

I wish i would have gotten to see what you said, i would have tried some cranks. The moving bite was so dead i switched over to a football jig pretty fast and started getting into them everywhere so i was happy. That is just a dang solid lake in so many ways. I'm going back and I'll check out Warnock too. Crappie guys were out in force with not much luck but it was a great day for bassin'

That's a nice fish. I've heard there is nice ones in that lake but I've only fished it once, Just a little to far and one more city permit that I don't need to buy. Not surprised about Olathe, I have stopped even trying thatlake until it starts to get hot and then during the fall also.

I'm trying to picture this, were you in uniform?

BTW this is this threads 600 reply

No but that would be funny wouldn't it? I'm doing my annual core training this week to keep my certification and we had a long lunch. Since the lake is less than a mile from the building it's an easy way to burn the extra time I had. Normally can't leave the building for lunch in case of emergency but since I'm training this week it's a different set of rules.

I haven't fished Atchison for a couple years but the same baits worked there for the 4 or 5 years in a row that I fished it so I'm assuming they still would. I never did very well on jig out there but I never fished it in a boat with electronics so we were always just beating the bank and fishing visible cover.

Hit Gardner on lunch again today, 17 this time putting me at 44 in two days in about an hours time. They're gorging on the shad schools there. This one was obviously doing a good job catching the shad.

^^^ That's crazy fat!!!^^^ I figured you'd go back after the day you had yesterday.

BTW, don't quote me on this but I think they dropped the permit thing a couple years ago at Osawatomie but you may still need a boat permit I'm not sure?

Do you have to pay every time you go to the power plant?

I went out there a year or two ago and I had to buy a permit but that may have changed since then, I guess I'll have to look and see.

Are you talking about La Cygne? If you go to the main ramps that are in Linn County you have to pay everytime or have a year pass you can buy in the shop by the southernmost ramp. I launch in the river when possible. It's easier if there is a lot of wind, there's good fish in the river at times, and it's free.

Got an invite from a friend whose parents live on Lake Quivira to do a little night fishing tonight, the wife wasn't thrilled but I didn't want to pass up the chance. Wasn't sure we would get to fish long with lightning in the distance and a few raindrops falling but it ended up being a really nice night. I only fished a jig and a chatterbait, both homemade ones. The jig was getting the numbers but the chatterbait was getting the better quality. Biggest one of the night was a nice healthy 4lb 4oz fish.

101_1462.jpg

Ended the night with 33 fish to put me at a nice even 700 bass on the year so far. Not going to make the 1,000 mark by my birthday like I was hoping but 3/4 of the way there ain't bad :eyebrows:

Salenity that one was 'just' 3 lbs, went 18.5''. As for the photography, I gave up on trying to get the phone to take the pics and just let a good digi cam do the work :)

700 huh Blue? Keep it up and we're going to have to start a betting pool. You ready for that kind of pressure? ;)

Going fishing somewhere tomorrow, thinking Miami or Pleasanton. All my regular fishing buddies are working tomorrow so if any of you guys want to tag along I've got an empty back of the boat tomorrow. I'll be leaving early though so if you want to hitch a ride down there be ready to lose some sleep :respect-059:

That sounds like fun but I'm back to my busy season and have to to work in the morning. Good luck and make it a 50+ fish day.

BTW the last few times I've been to the state lake the fishing was a bit off for me. I still managed to get a 4.5# for FOTD but not a lot of other big fish. The grass/moss is really starting to grow fast giving them some cover and moving them from my normal hot spots... & I've also caught a lot of them right on the bank but my 6-8' deep fish aren't there.

BTW, daylight to 9-10 am is by far the best times to fish that lake IMHO.

Well the plans to go to Miami got changed a little bit. I met up with Flash (Sam) at Lake Wabunsee after being shown some pictures of some really nice largemouth and smallmouth and being all but guaranteed some quality fish. The lake did not disappoint. I got there about an hour before he did and got to work quickly, catching a solid 18+ inch keeper on one of my homemade jigs, which turned out to be the bait of choice for almost all of the bigger fish I caught.

101_1463.jpg

Sam got there and I was basically on a guided trip for the day only I was running the trolling motor. Mostly caught largemouth but did get a few smaller smallmouth mixed in too. We for sure had 12-15 that would have been close to being keepers (18") and in the 3 pound range and they where munching jigs.

101_1465.jpg

Despite the numbers of quality fish the big fish eluded us, until about 15 minutes before I had to leave. I got a light bite and my hands set the hook before my brain truly registered the bite. Although all the fish fought hard and I'd be mistaken several times thinking I'd hooked a big fish that turned out to be "just another 3 pounder" this fish had strength and weight. After a pretty good little tussle, Sam got the net under her. Board was too short for a measurement but she was very thick and 5lbs 10ozs and almost swallowed my homemade 3/8oz Texas craw jig.

101_1466.jpg

101_1467.jpg

I ended the day with 27 fish to put me at 727 bass on the year. It was good to meet up with another guy from the board. If any of you get the chance to fish with him Sam is a heck of a guy and a really knowledgable fisherman.

Awesome day.. Nothing beats new waters... I'm suprised they were biting that well a day after that monster storm rolled through.

Interesting jig color too. I feel like brown/orange/reds give them something that stands out well to look at over black/blue/purple. I've been having good luck with baits with a little 'fire' in em this year.

I was surprised they were eating that good too but I've had some of my best days on days that looked like they should be slow on paper.

That jig is my Texas Craw color. A lot of the crawdads in the lakes I fish most of the time have that rusty camo pattern where they're almost orange or red and then dark brown to black in an alternating pattern. I've got a whole album of pictures on my FB page of fish that have fallen for my homemade baits and lots of them ate that exact jig.

Anybody fish at Smithville Lake lately? I haven't been out there for awhile. Just wondering if the bass are biting??

Thanks everyone

Thinking about going to mound city lake this weekend. I need a break from big water for a weekend I think. Anyone have any kind of experience here? I've fished it once and didn't do great, but would like to give it another shot. If not there, I may hit the big pleasonton lake.

Man you all have been wacking them bass! Thinking about heading to Melvern on Saturday to chase some green fish. Anyone been doing any good lately?

I've done really well at Mound City a couple times but I've never fished it this time of year. I normally do really well on a golden shiner colored tube with a rattle in it or a motoroil colored beaver bait or plastic worm. I've also done well on a chatterbait and shallow running crankbait.

Last time I was down there a couple weeks ago everything was eating a jerkbait. I would think that would still be true since it hasn't warmed up any since then. A friend of mine was down there earlier this week and did really well on finesse plastics also.

clayton westgate. should be pretty easy to find, the picture of that big one from Monday is my profile picture now.

I looked your name up on FB and the first one that came up was not you but the other Clayton Westgate was holding a Wally!! :)

Ok so I am 100% bored with Hillsdale, this time last year my son and I had a dozen Wally and 50+ whites and crappies, this year we have 0 Wally and 9 nice whites. I am open for new lakes to check out.

If any of you want to go out and fish send me a PM, I have a 2010 LOWE FM165 and tow it with a Nissan Titan. I would only ask for help with gas money. I am off on Saturdays and Sundays. I put an add on craigslist last year and have two guys who go out maybe twice a year with me but I am looking to get back into LMB. I live in Overland Park.

I have only fished Lacygne and Hillsdale since moving here three years ago.

Thanks,

Chris

PS: Here are few pics from the past to make myself feel better about my crappy start to this Spring!! Clayton thanks for posting big arse fish pics!!! :)

Were you able to find me? I think I have my security settings pretty high, you might not be able to find me through a search.

Are you looking for something close by? Melvern would be my pick or Pomona if you want something a little closer, maybe Clinton. Perry is a good lake too but not many walleye. Melvern is just a fun lake with lots of smallmouth, whites, and crappie and a pretty good population of walleyes and saugers but it is a little further drive. Personally I'd rather drive a little further if the fishing is going to be a lot better. You spend all that time and money on gas to go to Hillsdale and then the fishings not very good, not worth it to me.

I'd like to get out with you sometime, just have to get the green light from the boss lady to go on a Sunday sometime.

Looking to fish when ever and catch what ever! Are Melvern and Perry closer to me than Hillsdale? It takes me maybe 20 minutes to get to Hillsdale from 87th and I-35. My wife married a fisherman and her Dad was one also, she understands the gotta got thing about fishing so no issues with her and me going when ever! :) I will try ya on FB again today!

Melvern takes me about an hour and 20 or 30 minutes from Johnson Drive and I-35, Perry is about an hour. Like I said though, if you're going to spend the time and the money might as well go somewhere you can catch something.

I'll have to try to find you on facebook I guess. Don't want to change the settings, don't need anyone of my "customers" looking me up on there :eyebrows: . Mondays are always easiest for me to go if you ever get one off.
