Don't Tell The Wife Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Throwing jerk baits, jigs and arig. We must have just hit it right. I haven't seen anything that big at WM since catching one just over 8 nearly 12 years ago. I haven't been serious about bass fishing for quite a while as I have been chasing crappie when out fishing and mixing in the other impossible hobby of golf. 2 Quote
Drew03cmc Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Don't fight it. I'm trying not to, but the darn things aren't cheap. 1 Quote
Don't Tell The Wife Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 I pretty much grew up in a boat and have had one or many from high school till now. They are nice to have and once you have one you are always adding little things to upgrade them, not to mention the annual maintenance that comes along with them. My last boat was a 91 Champion and it was a great boat until the motor spun a crank bearing that cost $6,000 to fix. That was my chance to upgrade after owning that boat for 12 years. I pretty much do all the work except rebuilding one and they are still expensive. Would I not own a boat?  No, they are just part of my life that I am willing to sacrifice other things in order to have one. The really bad part is when you have multiple boats for fishing, family activities, and then one for hunting. Not complaining as I am fortunate to have a family and job that allows me to own and afford these toys but man they take a lot of maintenance to keep running.  My dad always said it is cheaper to find a buddy with a boat and buy him fuel and whatever else to be able to fish with him as that is the cheapest and least amount of headaches you will have. This coming from a guy who has always owned boats. 3 Quote

I've had boats in my family down at LOZ since I was in a stroller, and I've never been on one that's 100% functional hah Quote

The water is clear as I have ever seen it at the dam which makes fishing very difficult.  The lake can be very difficult when the water is cold.  When it warms up, however, fishing can be great.  All you need for numbers is the Ned rig and you are good to go.  Sifting past the dinks can be a challenge if you are after bigger fish though. 1 Quote

Drew03cmc Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Nice. Melvern is a lake I want to go fish this year, but will have to rent a boat or find a friend. This weekend, I'm going to go walk the dam at Clinton if anyone wants to join in. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 26, 2015 Global Moderator Posted March 26, 2015 Dad and I are going to Melvern tomorrow. I'm just hoping that we boat a fish. Going to see if I can scare dad in the new boat too 2 Quote
hooks21 Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 First time posting, I appreciate all the insight on all the local lakes. Got out to Rocky Hollow near Excelsior Springs. Cold and a little breezy at times. Caught 4 of 5 within 7 casts not too far from shore. Dragging a football jig painfully slow. Biggest was 5 lbs. I'll attach some pics when I get close to a computer. Quote
Don't Tell The Wife Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 Welcome to the forum. You are in my back yard for sure. It's been a bit since I have been out to Rocky Hollow but sounds like a solid day for sure. Quote
SuperFluke Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Got my bluewater LED kit awhile back and have been working on the install since I pulled the boat out of the deep freeze. Got the decks finished up tonight and will hopefully have the compartments and livewell finished tomorrow. I'll probably be headed to leavenworth on wednesday during the day to shake it all down before thursday nights start up to make sure I didn't break something else cause I t-tapped a bunch of lines that I use to power my electronics rather than run three more sets of power. Hope to see you guys on the water soon.   1 Quote
Ondrejka Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Everyone keep your fingers crossed that the forecasted front coming through Thursday holds off! Quote
Brian6428 Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 My horn doesn't work, but then I've never had a boat with a working horn. You aren't missing much. All the horn on my Triton is good for is my brother honking at me while I back him down the ramp. It isn't nearly loud enough to be heard from another boat if the outboard is running. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 1, 2015 Global Moderator Posted April 1, 2015 Well my fishing marathon has unfortunately come to an end , it was a good time though. Started it off at Melvern with Dad. Windier than they said it would be by at least double, supposed to be 7mph, but I've never seen 7mph wind make white caps. I was just hoping for a fish, any fish. Didn't take long before I caught one and a few more across the dam. Dad got his first one by the support post of the outlet/inlet, to my surprise it was a chunky largemouth, and he actually caught another largemouth a couple cast later. One of my smallies off the dam was nearly square, 16.5" and 2lbs 13ozs. We ran to a spot up the lake and got several more smallmouth, a few whites, a walleye, and a couple largemouth, including this one that was 4lbs 7ozs which is my second largest from Melvern. All the smallies (and most the fish for that matter), were busting at the seams. Sunday Nicole and I went to Shawnee. It was tougher than anticipated but we still got some trout, a bunch of bluegill, a few bass, and Nicole caught a drum. I managed to sight fish a little golden rainbow with a micro jig under a bobber. It took a lot of trying and swapping out spools on her reel but Nicole finally caught her first fish from the new boat. Her mom's boyfriend wanted some fish to eat so we brought them 6 trout home, yuck. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 1, 2015 Global Moderator Posted April 1, 2015 Monday I was back at Melvern, someone had turned the switch on. Lots of them like this. Then my jerkbait got trucked by this tank, 4.5 pounds. Then this happened. I've had them chase my bait but never actually try to eat it, released unharmed and hopefully a little more wary. Seems early in the year to be talking about football? Oh, and there was some walleye on the dam I guess.  After a good anti zebra mussel spray down, I was on Lone Star Tuesday morning. Water was dirty, weeds have exploded, and junk floating everywhere, fishing was tough. I had one good one to the boat on a bladed jig but it came off while I was playing with it trying to get it to jump. Caught a fish here and a fish there but no good pattern other than a bladed jig and jerkbait were about all I could get bit on. Got to the dam and was about to call it quits when I got hit by a fish that was noticeably bigger than anything else I'd hooked. Gave me a heck of a tussle on my jerkbait rod before finally coming to the net. My first Lone Star wiper ever was 6lbs 4ozs. A few cast later I decided to do it again, only bigger. Never seen a fish eat a jerkbait to the point that I couldn't see it. 3ozs shy of tying my PB for wipers. Even managed to get a video of a portion of the fight. 6 Quote

Never seen a fish eat a jerkbait to the point that I couldn't see it.   The last 5 pounder I caught at Lone Star a week or so ago choked my triple grip jerbait so badly I had to break the cutters out. I have also never seen anything like that, lol. Quote
Doc-Drew Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 That wiper is sick! Â By the way, I am extremely jealous that you have been able to take advantage of this nice weather and get out and catch a bunch of fish! Â The only thing keeping me sane at this point is the fact that you are catching them on baits I painted for you. Â That could be making it worse, I don't know. 2 Quote

SuperFluke Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Fished Leavenworth today. Was my first time out there. Pretty good bite early but no big ones. Caught some nice crappie on the ned and a 3 lb wiper on a jerkbait. Seems like the lake gets a lot of pressure. 6 or 7 boats in the water when I left in middle of day on a Wednesday. 1 Quote
