Super User gardnerjigman Posted November 3, 2014 Super User Posted November 3, 2014 The boat gods are shining down on me. Was able to pull the trigger on a near mint 50 horse Johnson to replace my toasted Evinrude. Having them swapped out this week at the boat doc and should be back on the water in no time. However, the kicker is that I may be heading to Paris, TX for two weeks to train a new site for my job Nov. 9th-22nd. Congrats on the boat motor! Sounds like a sweet find! Stinks a little about the work training but there is always Lacygne after you get back! 1 Quote

Doc-Drew Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I ventured out to Melvern by myself Saturday...braving the wind and cold. Don't feel bad, BassinR83, I am not very good at a spook either. I caught all my fish on the Ned but then again didn't try too much. I don't know about the rest of the guys that went out Saturday but for me, the fish were tougher to pattern. Last week, as long we had our lures in 10-12' we were catching fish. Saturday the fish were more scattered. I would catch one right on the bank, then the next fish would be in 10'. They seemed to be more schooled up but varied depths quite a bit. The quality was also better than last week. I would say my average smallmouth was around 15" Saturday as opposed to 10" the previous week. I did manage to catch one fish that surprised the heck out of me seen below. Oddly, the fish seemed to have no ill effects from the wound. Obviously was trying to eat and then swam away like nothing was wrong. I also managed to catch two spots so that was a refreshing change. Below is a picture of the bigger of the two. I can't seem to get the pictures to display right side up but if you click them they are correct. On another note, when is a good time to start trout fishing at Shawnee? My father is coming down from SD around Thanksgiving and I would like to take him fishing. I figured if we went fishing we would probably go to La Cygnes, Melvern, or Coffey County. Then it dawned on me this morning that trout fishing may be fun at Shawnee. I have never fished for trout in the fall. What do you guys think? 2 Quote
Chris S Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Here you go, 62 cranks, 4 spinnerbaits, and a buzzbait. All yours for $75. how much for those rouges top left? Quote

Doc-Drew Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 man that almost looks like a boat prop! That is the only thing I could think of other than an axe. My question is, how does a fish get that close to a prop...unless someone was fighting it while their prop was spinning and it got too close. Quote
Doc-Drew Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Go for it! You'll do fine with anything from nightcrawlers or trout marshmallows under a bobber, small spoons, and Rooster Tails. Probably even the Ned haha. If you feel like venturing out this way, I fish a tiny lake on the Clinton State Park grounds called Lake Henry every spring and fall. From shore, you don't need anything but trout nibbles under a bobber just sitting on the bottom. Rooster tails if you feel like casting. During the winter I even get to ice fish there and it's excellent. They stock so many trout in there it's silly, so it's all just put and take. I never need anything besides some small 'cralwers and trout nibbles. Check it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0bemUeWeAE You NEED to take me this winter! Never caught a trout through the ice but have caught plenty of other fish. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 4, 2014 Global Moderator Posted November 4, 2014 You NEED to take me this winter! Never caught a trout through the ice but have caught plenty of other fish.Ice jigs and wax worms are killers on trout under the ice. We used to catch lots of trout and gills through the ice on that setup before I bought a boat and started fishing soft water all winter. If you go to Shawnee just fish the same baits as in the spring. I'd fish a Ned and see if you can find that 6lb 10oz smallmouth that Ned Kedhe caught and released out there a year or two ago. 1 Quote

Shad will take shelter under a boat if they're being chased, maybe he chased a school under a boat and got whacked. Or maybe he was hiding under a docked boat when it got fired up. Quote

It's definitely a fun way to cure cabin fever during the winter, brings me back to my roots up North. If it gets cold enough again, I may venture on to Clinton. Quote
Chris S Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Already sold oh well!! did you sell the entire bunch? Quote

I thought of trying to fish Shawnee for bass as well. I have never seen a smallmouth out there before, though. I figured if I did go there for trout, I would do some bass/Ned fishing since trout eat it as well. 1 Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 6, 2014 Super User Posted November 6, 2014 Fished Melvern yesterday, it was windy at times and made fishing the lighter finesse type presentations more difficult. We managed to catch a lot of fish, mostly smaller smallmouth with several at 15+ but nothing 18 or over. We did catch a bunch of big white bass on jerkbaits , some that were just a little short of 16 inches, they were a blast to catch and would almost rip the rod from your hands when they hit. All in all it was a great day on the water. 2 Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted November 9, 2014 Super User Posted November 9, 2014 You guys nestled in for the winter??? Lol Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Nope... I'm hitting Eldorado Mon or Tues. Which ever day has the least wind. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 9, 2014 Global Moderator Posted November 9, 2014 Nope... I'm hitting Eldorado Mon or Tues. Which ever day has the least wind. 20 plus mph both days, 70 Monday, 38 Tuesday. Think I'd go tomorrow! South wind tomorrow so you'd be okay if you stick to the dam and southern portion of the lake. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 9, 2014 Global Moderator Posted November 9, 2014 Academy has their micro guide series of Ethos rods on sale right now. Normally $79.99, now $49.99. These are great rods if any of you guys haven't fished one and if one breaks they'll exchange it no questions asked. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted November 9, 2014 Super User Posted November 9, 2014 You guys nestled in for the winter??? LolNO!!! I'm still waiting for the Wiper bite to start. They are the hardest hitting, hardest pulling and largest size bass I catch! Not to mention catching them on back to back casts, it can be flat out magical! 1 Quote

micahthorlawson Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I have a buddy from Iowa coming down this weekend to go fishing... With the weather coming this weekend I was thinking of going to la cygne, but since I only have the pond hopper we would pretty much be confined to the the creek. Which for me has always been very hit and miss. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Has anyone been out there lately? On another note, I fished Louisburg City Lake this weekend. Caught several tiny bass. The only reason I gave it a try is because I met a guy at Olathe Lake that said it has some big fish in it. Has anyone ever fished there? Quote
