FishingCole Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Me and a friend are headed down to Melvern for a large decision fishing trip and we saw at least three bass boats headed back towards kc on i35 Quote
Ondrejka Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 with all of you at melvern I hope to see some post about it only TWO last time. cmon mannnnn  I posted last weekend! Annnd here's another. What a sweet day today.  On the lake by 7:30 and the fog...wow. Pretty gnarly. Started out on the north side of the dam, and surprisingly was alone. I was hooked up with one of the first fish of the day on a tube, when all of the sudden my dad ties into a fish too (squarebill). Conor net my fish, and then my dad's came out of the water and it was a GIANT. So after a fun battle, we had her and my fish in the net. What a pig compared to my decent fish. Weighed in at 4 lbs. 3 oz., 19.5". Within the first thirty minutes on the water, my dad's day is already made. We made our way down the dam a little ways, caught a bunch of decent fish between the three of us on the Ned, then decided to head back up and fish a shallow flat nearby where we'd caught big fish before. Not the case today, definitely needed wind and there was none of that stuff. So we opted to make a run to Turkey Creek and see who was home. Started back at a favorite secondary point, Conor and I with tubes and my dad with the Ned. Conor got bit right away which ended up being a drum. As he was working the tube out of his in the net, I got bit hard and was tied into something big....like a huge drum. Put another tube on and on the very next cast, I was hooked up again, this time it was Mr. Smalljaw. Jumped right off the bat and put up a pretty intense battle. Thought for sure this was my 4# +, but was just ended up being a hair shy at 3 lbs. 11 oz. Still a really nice fish and great fight. Hit a few more spots on the way out of Turkey and didn't see much worth staying for, so we just blasted back to the dam to spend the remaining hour or so roasting there. All three of us rigged up a Ned and just went to town. It was pretty much every cast. A lot of Ned specials, raised a GIANT smallie chasing my dink that was easily pushing 20+ inches and all of 5#. Conor dropped his Ned down but she didn't want it. Nice to talk to Drew and Schauer for a little bit amongst the 15 other boats on the dam. Gar were busting everywhere by the intake and we were marking loads of bait. My dad's just dragging a Ned behind the boat when all of the sudden he's hooked into something big. We all pretty much knew what it was, so I netted and landed it for him. Somehow got snagged on a pectoral. Decided to call it around 1:30-2.  Pretty awesome way to cap an already epic day for my old man, with his PB Smallie and a 100+ fish day.      1 Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted October 25, 2014 Super User Posted October 25, 2014 Good looking fish guys. Was hoping to make it out fishing with Tinberg today but had a boiler go down at work. Got it up and going and had a sharp pain at the bottom of my spine. Long story short, OMC found a cyst on my lower spine and will be talking surgery options Monday. Might end my fishing season earlier than I wanted this year Quote

That sucks man, hopefully you'll have a speedy recovery. Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted October 26, 2014 Super User Posted October 26, 2014 Where's the dislike button? That sucks man, hopefully you'll have a speedy recovery. My thoughts exactly. Not sure how long I'll be down, I'm sure sitting will be a pain... It is now anyways. Maybe I'll get lucky and still get to fish, I don't sit then anyways! fingers crossed! Quote
FishingCole Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 We ended up getting to the lake even later than expected due to a tire on the trailer blowing. Caught four small smallmouth and had to call it because our night lights malfunctioned as well Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted October 26, 2014 Super User Posted October 26, 2014 Anyone trout fish @ Kill Creek today? It's possible I had the most fun on that lake today I've had in years. Trolled Rapala Shad Raps and Lucky Craft Flat Mini. A lot of fish caught. Quote

Brian6428 Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Went down to LOZ this past thursday and friday. Had a good time and caught quite a few fish, but no real size. We mainly caught 1-2 lbers, but I'm not complaining when we caught as many of those on spooks as we did. I linked to pics of the average spook fishes and the big fish of the trip. http://imgur.com/a/pA2ES Quote
BassinR83 Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 What part of the lake were you guys fishing Brian? Quote
Brian6428 Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 What part of the lake were you guys fishing Brian? 7-11mm of the Osage. Most consistent lures were a spook and a shaky head. Quote
BassinR83 Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Thanks Brian, I was thinking of making a trip down there. I've never fished LOZ in the fall before and have only fished gravois arm. Quote
Brian6428 Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Thanks Brian, I was thinking of making a trip down there. I've never fished LOZ in the fall before and have only fished gravois arm. No problem. The lake was turning over and the water was about 66 degrees, so it should get really good pretty soon. I would highly suggest going. Throwing spooks in the backs of coves at sunset is easily the most fun I've had fishing all year. Quote

It's possible I had the most fun on that lake today I've had in years. Trolled Rapala Shad Raps and Lucky Craft Flat Mini. A lot of fish caught. Did they just stock them again or something? Didn't even know they did a fall stocking out there. I tore them up out there this spring, I'll have to get out there and chase them around a little this fall. Quote
Doc-Drew Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 My wife and I were also at Melvern Saturday. Â We didn't get anything over 3 lbs but caught a ton of fish so it was still a lot of fun. Â We basically fished the dam all day because my wife won't let me leave a spot if we are catching fish...even if they are only 6" long haha. Â We caught them on about everything we threw at them- various medium diving crankbaits, swimbaits, jetkbaits, and obviously the Ned. Â It's not very often we get a day in late October that is 80+ degrees and CALM. Â I will take that any day! Â Although, a little breeze would have been nice. 3 Quote

We were roasting but the one after another after another helped us along. 1 Quote
Ondrejka Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 On another note, I'm probably going to have a replica made of my dad's 4.3 pounder from Saturday. I've done a little research, but does anyone have any recommendations on good taxidermists in the area? 1 Quote

Chris S Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Fished Saturday with Jake and my neighbor John, who had not been fishing in two years. Caught a bunch of dinks to start the trip, I switched to a heavier jig head 3/8 and a 1/4 oz to see if I could get the ned down pass the dinks and on to some bigger fish. The change up worked my neighbor John hooked up a football and Jake and I caught a steady mix of 2's, most on the left side of the dam PB&J Zmans. Sun tan in late October in KC gotta love it!! It was nice to see a few folks out enjoying the weather as well!!  2 Quote
