Ondrejka Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 Me and a friend attempted to fish Melvern today without much luck. What tips could you guys give us for our next trip? Read back a few posts/pages. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 19, 2014 Super User Posted October 19, 2014 Ondrejka, it was me who stopped to chat. I saw Chris S at the boat ramp and watched his boat float off. Can you elaborate on that? Quote
RangerDanger Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 Can you elaborate on that? I'm assuming you want to know about the black lowe floating away? Chris and I were talking in the parking lot and he said he had to go cuz they let his boat go. His partner was in the boat and brought it back to the dock with a little yelling. 1 Quote

RangerDanger Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 I hope you got some pics? Video would be more appropriate. The last thing Chris said to me was: "I should have tied the boat up". Was thinking I was going to have to put back in and go get his boat. 1 Quote
conorsixtakc Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Following up on our Saturday at Melvern, they seem to be chasing and biting lots of baits. I caught em on a squarebill, swimbait, jerkbait, ned rig duh, and even had one on a duo realis spinbait (bait ADHD). Didnt need to try so many things in the end though, the best bites came on tubes. Fished some walking baits and didn't see a single swirl, so that topwater bite may be slowing down compared to my avatar fish that mauled a spook a few weeks back, weighing in at just under 4. Like Brian had mentioned I was put in my place a few times by the zebra mussels. Had what would've easily been my two best that day break me off. Quote
Doc-Drew Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Got back from Milford yesterday afternoon. It turned out to be a frustrating weekend for me but in a good way I guess. We caught a whole bunch of fish but only a couple worth mentioning. We ended with over 100 fish total so it was fun at least. We never could find the wipers though. I caught one by accident trolling a Ned rig as I went around a father and son fishing from shore. I also caught a LM that I didn't weigh but I'm guessing was just under 3 lbs on a spook--the only fish caught on top water. The Ned rig was the bait of choice for sure. I could probably count on one hand the number of fish caught on other techniques. The first picture was caught the first night on... wait for it...The ned rig... what else!? We had been catching a bunch of small fish and she hit just like the rest with a rapid fire tapping. I set the hook and it felt solid right away and then nothing. I thought either it must be small because no matter how fast I reeled in, there was just a little weight. It got about 3/4 of the way to the boat and decided to turn. My drag peeled off and then it jumped. It was dark outside so we couldn't see it but I could tell from the giant cannonball splash that it was big. We finally got it in the boat and realized how big it was. It weighed 4.36 lbs. The second fish was my wife's biggest. It was roughly 2.75- I can't remember the exact weight unfortunately. The final picture is my first blue cat (thanks to Bluebasser's identification). We were fishing at the dam and I marked a bunch of fish around a bait ball so I dropped a jigging spoon and ended up snagging that blue. 2 Quote
Chris S Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Video would be more appropriate. The last thing Chris said to me was: "I should have tied the boat up". Was thinking I was going to have to put back in and go get his boat. My Dad and Son decided it would be fun to let go of the dock they blamed each other for the boat floating away, I had to yell instruction to my dad to start the motor and bring it back to the dock, almost pulled a Tins and ran into the dock but I stuck my foot out to keep my trolling motor off the pole! Tied it up and walked back up the hill! I was not happy but then again I should have tied it up to begin with! 1 Quote
Chris S Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Fished Melvern Friday afternoon 2 to 6 and Saturday 8 to 1 and 2 to 630 with my Dad in town from Florida and my 9 year old Jake. 1/8 oz ned head with 2 inch PB&J Zman, super glued is all we ever needed. Started with 30 neds came home with four. We caught over 100 fish, the biggest being almost 3, lots of 1 to 2 lbs both days, when fishing with a kid catching is a good thing regardless how big or small. The cove to the right of the dam proved once again to hate me, I lost a 19 - 21 inch fish at the boat again weather was great and we sent my Dad back to Florida with a SMB thumb! 3 Quote

It looks like your bite really turned on for you towards dusk. It sure sounded like you guys were having a lot of fun. It's always good when your kid is with ya and your on the fish! I caught a lot fish but didn't get the quality you did. Nice looking rig you got there. I'm headed back out there tomorrow and Thursday. Hopefully the bite is still on. 1 Quote

We where not casting a the bank but about 10 to 15 feet out from it. Quote
BassinR83 Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 That's awesome. It was the first time for me using the ned rig. I actually just got back from Rogers Sporting Goods and stocked up on a lot more. For me the magic number was to stay in 10-12 fow anywhere along the dam. I must have had steady action there 2 1/2 hrs or so. Great trip for my first time at Melvern. 1 Quote

Super User skunked_again Posted October 21, 2014 Super User Posted October 21, 2014 OK so after hearing all the news on melvern me and my friend are gonna check it out tomorrow, any tips for the first time? This goes back to what I said before. I don't fish Melvern with many baits I see posted. Scrounger head and the tail of a Chompers Shaky Worm. All things rolled into one, shaky head, ned, and swimming bait. Plus, the vibration is amazing. More 18"+ fish for me on this bait than all others combined. We are heading to Melvern Monday, if anyone else is going, hit me up. We can compair notes at days end. 1 Quote
