Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 17, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 17, 2014 I did learn how to practically fall in the lake at Pomona. Probably as close as I've ever come to falling in the lake from a boat, and I have no idea how it even happened. All I remember is it involved a wiggle wart and being very proud of myself for just a moment until I started falling. Quote
Vavatron Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Any of you guys ever fish Browning Oxbow up in Elwood, KS? I have a couple of buddies up in St. Joe that want to learn to fish, so I am heading up there this weekend to teach them a few things. Is it a decent shore lake? I see on the state site what is in it, but I am wondering what the populations of bass, catfish, and blue gill actually look like. or Belcher Branch. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted July 17, 2014 Super User Posted July 17, 2014 Belcher Branch isn't bad for bass. There are some bigger bass in it but over the last couple of years it has received a lot more pressure. It is only a 55 acre lake and quite a bit of the eastern side of the lake is extremely shallow. During the summer, I have had my best luck at the dam and on the ledges of the creek channel that runs down the west side of the lake. I suspect the lake is pretty muddy right now as that area has received most of the rain over the last two weeks in this area. It tends to be highly stained anyway. The link below provides a contour map.  http://mdc.mo.gov/sites/default/files/resources/2010/05/5628_3538.pdf Quote
SuperFluke Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 So, the report from Perry was pretty so-so. We tried docks, both marinas, and some other places in between. Saw RJ986 out there, and he had a good one when we pulled up. He couldn't get his scale out of kilograms, so  The best spot turned out to be a main lake point with a shallow, somewhat offshore ridge. Blue got a 3.57 lb smallmouth there on a shakeyhead, while I was just happy to catch a mess of whites and a decent largemouth from the same spot. We had to leave once Blue started getting giddy after he caught two drum on back to back casts with the ned. Later on, Blue lost what appeared to be a 5-6lb class largemouth on a shakeyhead in a marina, which would have really capped off the trip.   Final score...SuperFluke zero drum, Bluebasser86 two drum, so I win. 4 Quote
Bassin4Fun2 Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 I have been reading about the Ned rig and would like to try it out. What size hooks you guys use for this setup? Quote

What size hooks you guys use for this setup?  Oh boy, here we go... http://forums.ozarkanglers.com/topic/38778-zman-baits-on-the-ned-rig  The ned's gained a significant amount of popularity in the last two years (aka the "varmint" if you're on Table Rock) so it's not very hard to find anything and everything you want to know as long as you've got a keyboard  BTW if anybody's looking for a good tug, the wiper bite's been on fire at Clinton. Come sundown it's like clockwork. I'm sure this cool stretch has helped it a bit, but I'm amazed at how many hybrids are in that lake. A buddy of mine and a couple guys he was with had a 50 fish day earlier this week. Quote
Enphrared Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Hit cat claw at james reed the past few nights. Tried some worms I bought over the weekend. Didn't work out too well. LOL  Tried a 10" culprit watermelon copper red flake and black w/ chart tail (TRIG'd). Maybe got a few "nibbles". Funny thing was last night where I switched to a purple/wht worm last 30min of light and started getting a lot of bites, just couldn't hook'em. When I got home I noticed my hook tip was a little bent. o.O Need to pay attention to that. Guess I hit too many logs/rocks over the past few days.  Also used a tenn shad super fluke Wed night and manged to get a few strikes, and reeled a small LMB late evening.  I need to get a boat to hit some other places. =\ Quote

What size hooks you guys use for this setup?  I use these almost exclusively now. 1/16th oz unless I'm fishing real deep, and then I go to 1/8th.  http://mondotackle.com/item/P012000320001240.html Quote
cbass12 Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Got to melvern at 0600 yesterday. We could not have asked for a better day to be on the water!! First fish came very quickly on the Ned and it never really slowed down until around 1100. From there on it was a fish every once in a while but the bite had definitely slowed. Biggest was 2lb 14oz smallie, also caught a decent spot in the marina cove. All my fish were caught on the ned except for one on the drop shot and a couple on a spook. The fish I caught on the spook came out of very shallow water where the weeds on the shoreline had been flooded. The only down side to the day was the zebra mussels. I had about a 4lb fish break me off at the boat (my fault for not checking the line), and I must have lost about 10 rigs and had to go through two 8 foot leaders by the end of the day. Â 3 Quote

Love the ned rig, but I think I need to go to a 1/4 oz. on the 4th, the spots were already suspended at 25-30 foot, and my best shot on a smallie was main channel in the wind. I just can't keep the 1/8 oz on the bottom.. Otherwise, I will fish drop shot 1/4 oz for spots in the trees.  Do you guys ever put on competitions through this forum. I have to admit, there is a lot more activity here that I anticipated. Would love to hook up and get a few pointers! Quote

Too heavy and I think it would take away from the effectiveness of the rig. I used the 1/8 oz when we were down there the last week of June and I did really well with it. Quote

Ned's henchmen would tell you if you can feel bottom, your rigs too heavy. It's a no-feel, do-nothing bait. Like CBass said 1/8 should get the job done in 25-30 feet. 1 Quote

That largemouth was 19.5inchs, 1.71 Kg = 3.76 pounds thanks to a google conversion. It was my biggest of the day.   Perry produced most my fish off of the east and west bridge. I soaked the Ned rig and a shad colored crankbait the most. I caught somewhere near 15 smallmouth. On average they looked like this:   I was the drum slayer of they day 10+ dork fishes . Quote

Bassin4Fun2 Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Thanks for the additional info on the Ned rig. I have researched it all over internet, but I just want to confirm the hook size. I bought some 1/16 and 1/8 jig heads with size 2 hook and it sure seems like that small of hook would hook anything but a small fish. Are these hooks suppose to be #1, #2 or 1/0, 2/0. Thanks again Quote

Thanks again  I'm about to place an order of mushroom heads in 1/16 oz and #1 hooks. 1/16 is all I fish it with, but I don't have near the experience as some of the other veterans on this thread. You could probably go a bit bigger on the hook but I choose not to in favor of more natural movement of the zinker. Quote
cbass12 Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Â by "do-nothing" do you mean, no retrieve? Just suspend and wait? Like drop shot? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that means just slowly dragging it or slowly reeling it without imparting any action on the bait. Most of the time we'll throw it up into shallow rocks and slowly retrieve it until it gets to the first little drop, then let it fall. I caught several fish doing this yesterday and they usually hit after the first couple turns of the handle. Â Thanks for the additional info on the Ned rig. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 18, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 18, 2014 I pour my own either a 3/32 or 1/8 if it's deeper or windy. If it's too windy to feel an 1/8oz then it's probably too windy to fish it effectively anyways. I do the 3/32 with a #2 the most but can go up to a 1/0, I just feel it knocks down on some of the very subtle action you're trying to get with the Ned. Also starting to play with a weedless jighead I just started pouring for them, should be really good in lakes with a few too many limbs and stuff to fish an open hook. Quote

Thoughts of fishing from a kayak down there during the Summer around 7mm sounds like certain death to me   If there were any co-angler opportunities I'd probably be interested. Quote
