Gary0155 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Looking for some lakes to do some fishing off the bank as I don't own a boat. Been taking my daughter out to James A Reed, but I want to check out some other areas. Drove around Blue Springs and Jacomo last week trying to scout out some areas to fish from the bank. Not sure there were many bank fishing areas (uncrowded), plan to scout it some more. Also planning on renting a boat with my dad next week to take on Jacomo during a weekday. Any recommendations from the KC crew? BTW, I haven't been fishing in 10 years and starting to get back into it heavily and getting my 7yr daugher involved. Been lurking on this site the past week and really enjoy the information on here and the friendly banter. I've been taking my 7 year old daughter to Jacomo lately. It gets pretty busy around the bank and there isn't a ton of options. James A Reed might be your best option. I would stay away from the kids pond because it is heavily fished. The last time I was there a family with three car loads showed up with like 30 poles and they only had like two kids. Quote
inunishi Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 For a brief minute I though "How does that fish swim upside down." Â 1 Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted June 11, 2014 Super User Posted June 11, 2014 Taxidermists. Lol can't get replicas wet so soon after being made, Curt! I got it at a garage sale. It's just going to ride around in the boat with me so I can always have a fish to pose with. Lol Quote
fknlo Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Decided to give Jacomo a try today. Â I've never had much luck there, but Blues post had me hopeful. Â Caught a decent 2-3lb fish on my first cast after I put in. Â Next fish was definitely my best of the year and probably pretty close to my PB. Â Caught almost all of my fish on a shaky head of various flavors. Â Â Didn't catch a ton of fish, but the majority of what I caught were pretty decent. Â Just an awesome day to be out with the lack of wind and it not being 100. Â 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 12, 2014 Global Moderator Posted June 12, 2014 I wish you could measure a fish like that in a tournament!  That gal has recovered nicely from the spawn! Quote

Caballo de Rio Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Yesterday was my first day off since my wife's girls weekend in Florida and fishing/de-stress was needed. Decided to head out to Jacomo. I've fished it about 6-7 times this year and great time. I launched the boat from the north boat ramp around 13:51 and was back at the dock around 1800. I headed north to the d**n and fished the east side of the d**n. After fishing the grass line for about 10 cast my bladder said bad choice. There was far to many causal observers in the area so I had to find a cove and find it fast.  . Once I had that resolved I worked the shore line by pitching a small  green crawdad at everything that looked fishy. I catch one small bass (no picture  ) he was a dink. Continued working the shore line and caught a pretty good catfish (my pb). This was quite an experience for me. I hate sliminess feeling of catfish so i bought a plastic gripper for this occasion. I get the joker to the side of the boat with line in one hand and gripper in the other and as i was placing gripper in its mouth the good Lord smiled down on me and broke my line.  (crisis adverted) Not wanting to catch another catfish I tied on a Chatterbait and worked the grass lines. Then about the 15-20 casts in my line broke mid cast and gave me another headache to deal with, a birds nest of all birds best. I know most of you have more rods than Bass Pro and Cabelas combined but I am a one rod guy. (not by choice and as fate would have it my new rod came via ups while I was gone) After dealing with the back lash for what seemed line days i started cutting and ripping line. I probably looked like Edward Scissor Hands out on the water. Soon I had a fresh clean spool to put line on. I looked in my bag where my line should be and was there any line. NOPE. I decided to pull the trolling motor and head to the marina and see what I could find. Pulled into the marina with no issues (first time boater, in older boat and everything is a new experience) The marina had some line and would only cost me 11.50 and I'd be fishing again soon. After re-spooling I headed to the south boat launch area and fished the grassy mats south of the launch. Hooked into 3 and caught one. The one I did catch I wanted to take a picture of so I out him in the live well. So I got my phone out and ready then I could figure out how to get that joker out of there. Was I going to have to catch him again to get his mouth open or what. After embarrassing myself by struggling to find a way to get the fish out I finally had success and put him on my measure board on the side of the boat. What happened next? Well the obvious. He flopped twice and was in the water. I heard him say "you just thought you won by catching me". I missed a few more fish after than I was done.  What a day of fun fishing and beautiful weather. sorry no photos!! Quote
pbrussell Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 20-30 mph winds forecasted tomorrow out of the south. I think I'll try some smaller water tomorrow and see if I don't end up getting blown off. Anyone ever fish maple leaf lake? My buddy fished there not long ago and it was on fire; a lot of fish with one that went 6+ to make things interesting. I may end up out there tomorrow to fight the wind for a while Quote
wcisme Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Hey everyone, Â Just found this site today, lots of great info on here! Â My brother and I like fishing the state and county lakes in and around MO-KS. We fish Miami County, Mound City and Middle Creek quite a bit. Miami County is our fav, but the weeds are really bad right now. We are thinking of trying out Shawnee State Lake or Critzer tomorrow. I looked through the post here and saw a few mentions on both lakes, but not a whole lot. You all seem to like the same kind of fishing we do so thought I would ask. Quote
Islander Sportsman Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Hillsale - went out in search of LMB and had little to no luck... I know that place is hard fishing, but i wanted to give it my best shot to get it done... that didn't happen. switched to crappie hunting and just kind of tied up to some spots i had seen others and did okay. there is one submerged brush pile i scanned that i want to go back to with more than 1 crappie set up and see how many i can catch.  Lake Olathe - LMB bite has been good and consistent. Zman chatterbait (white/chart and black/blue) were the 2 colors i used. Went out again this morning and went for crappie.. caught a few with only 1 being good sized. anyone ever crappie fish olathe and have luck?  4 trips in 3 days... i'll probably take tomorrow off... being a school teacher i get the water to myself mon-fri!  Eddie   Quote

wcisme Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Anyone have any experience on Shawnee State Lake or Critzer? They are both about the same travel time from KC, which ones a better choice? We havent fished either one. Any opionions? Quote
Bassin4Fun2 Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Hi Guys, I am new to forum and just found you local guys. I live south Olathe area, but I am disabled and unable to drive so I mainly only fish at my dad's farm on small lake that is about 100 miles away whenever I can get down there. My buddy and I would love to find some decent places close by if you guys have any good recommendations for bank fishing? Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted June 13, 2014 Super User Posted June 13, 2014 Have you tried Olathe lake? You may also try Miola Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 13, 2014 Global Moderator Posted June 13, 2014 Anyone have any experience on Shawnee State Lake or Critzer? They are both about the same travel time from KC, which ones a better choice? We havent fished either one. Any opionions? Critzer is a pain to fish. The trees are almost too thick to even get a boat through in a majority of the lake and don't show up with anything less than 20lb fluoro, I'd probably go with 65lb braid though. That's what it takes to get those dinks out of the jungle down there. Haven't fished Shawnee in several years but a buddy was out there last week and did not fair well. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 13, 2014 Global Moderator Posted June 13, 2014 Fished Melvern today from 5-2. Weather was beautiful, fishing SUCKED! Fished the entire day and had maybe 10 and all put together wouldn't have made 2 keepers. Jared finally caught one over 15" out of the far south end of the dam on a white Ned. Fished the marina for 1 smallmouth, again over 15" and this time on a white trick worm on a wacky rig. Best spot ended up being right by the state park ramp. Caught probably 20 fish off a 100yd stretch on the white or pink wacky rig trick worm. Probably 7-8 all day were even only 15" and almost all were skinny and torn up, nothing like normal Melvern smallmouth. I'm guessing maybe they were fish that had just finished spawning? Water is way up in the bushes and grass along the bank so the fry that should have recently hatched will have all kinds of places to hide. Ranger said it was at conservation pool for the first time in 2 years and they're planning on keeping it that way. I wouldn't go there if I didn't have to but dad wants to fish next Friday and that's where he seems to want to go so I might have to suffer through it again next week. Probably bring a catfish rod and drag a Santee Cooper rig behind the boat for blue cats instead of bass fishing Quote
Bassin4Fun2 Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 No I haven't tried any lakes around here. I will look into Olathe lake, are there some decent areas to fish of the bank? I am in wheelchair so has to have easy access. where is Miola? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 14, 2014 Global Moderator Posted June 14, 2014  No I haven't tried any lakes around here. I will look into Olathe lake, are there some decent areas to fish of the bank? I am in wheelchair so has to have easy access. where is Miola?  The fishing dock on the east side of Olathe is wheelchair accessible and has a railing all the way around it for your safety and there's pretty good fishing all around that dock because there's a flat on one side, a big drop off underneath it, and a rock ledge and deep water off the other side. Cedar Lake in Olathe has good shoreline access. Lake Lenexa off Prairie Star (95th) in Lenexa has paved sidewalks most of the way around it so that be another good one to check out. Quote

Bassin4Fun2 Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 bluebasser86, Thanks for that information. Will definitely look into those lakes. I fished cedar one time and didn't even get any bites, from what little I have heard it's not that great or maybe just don't know where to fish. Anybody fish Gardner or heritage park? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 14, 2014 Global Moderator Posted June 14, 2014 Never really fished heritage but it seems very shallow. It does have good shoreline access though. Gardner has very little shoreline access and the spots that it does are very thick with weeds. Quote
Bassin4Fun2 Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Ok thanks, I will checkout the others you recommended then. Quote

It would be a great place to fish for Flathead. Quote
