Jeremy Coalter Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Since i have a 60hp I will be trolling, which ramp do you recommend I launch at or is there only one choice? Thanks Well I plan to be on the water tomorrow morning on Lake Jacomo. I have not been since last Monday but last Monday they were still on the main lake stuff, I caught a four pounder and two 15 inchers. Caught one in a brush pile, one on the dam, and one right inside a main spawing creek. All fish came in about 3-to-5 foot of water. Water temps in around 55-56 degrees. To answer your question no they were not spawing yet they weren't even in the backs of the creeks yet. I caught all three of those fish on a crock-er-gator green pumpkin jig with a uv tightlines beaver trailer. Once the water temps get around 60-65 degrees they will start to spawn. A buddy of mine fished Stockton this weekend and he said the fish where spawing in every cove and pocket. The water temp down there is about 63-64 degrees so it should only be a matter of days before the fish move back in to the spawing pockets in some of our local lakes. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 28, 2014 Global Moderator Posted April 28, 2014 Thanks for the information, that makes me a feel a littler better about the lakes I've been fishing. Yes I am open to fishing in Kansas, I think the non resident licensee is $44 which I can live with considering Jackson county charges around $80 to fish our county lakes. With this time of year what lake in Kansas do you recommend? Also I have seen some of you talking about a bladed jig, is it the same as a chatterbait? That is something I have never used but am interested in, when would you use it and how is the retrieve? Thanks for the help You're biggest issues will be how far you want to drive and what lakes got hammered by all the rain and muddied up real bad. Melvern is probably my favorite this time of year but if you have trouble with a jerkbait you'll probably hate it right now. Both Pleasanton City Lakes, Mound City, Ft. Scott, Osage, Atchison, Perry, all of them are pretty good this time of year. If you don't mind the drive Bourban State Lake is a lake that's pretty easy to put 100 fish in the boat during the spring on pretty much whatever you feel like fishing. I've heard that Lyon is the same way but I've never fished it. Belcher Branch is up north a ways in MO and has some nice fish and is small enough to figure out pretty well in a day of fishing. Yes a bladed jig is basically the same as a chatterbait. Chatterbait is just the name of a a specific bait made by Zman but every similar bait gets called by the same name, just like lots of folks call every popper a Pop R or every walk the dog bait a Spook. I normally fish them with a very slow, straight retrieve, just fast enough to keep the blade working. Anymore I prefer them over spinnerbaits unless I need to move the bait fast. They're amazing in dirty to stained water because of all the vibration. I've also found that traditional spinnerbait colors don't seem to be the most effective colors with bladed jigs.I find myself fishing a lot of black and blue, green pumpkin, watermelon, candy bug, and a color I call Spicy Shad (kind of like a firetiger color). Regular spinnerbait colors work, but I catch my biggest fish on those colors, especially black and blue. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 28, 2014 Global Moderator Posted April 28, 2014 If any of you guys are looking for a mid range rod I have a few I'd like to sell but they're not worth shipping anywhere. I've got 3 St. Croix Mojo casting rods, 6' 6" M/F, 7' M/F, and 7' H/F. All of them are in good shape, $50 each. I also have a 7' 6" MH/F telescoping Shimano Clarus. Rods the older full grip style. It's great for launching big, deep running crankbaits, $30. I can text pictures to anyone interested. Quote
1strikeking Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Since i have a 60hp I will be trolling, which ramp do you recommend I launch at or is there only one choice? Thanks Well there are two boat ramps, the south boat ramp is part of the boat docks. I don't know if you have to keep your boat there to use that ramp but I have not checked into that. The one I use is the north boat ramp which is part of the marina and has two nice tie out docks and the ramp is huge it is like a 6 boat ramp. Also you can check out parire lee lake. I have only fished it a few times, but caught some nice fish. I think you can use a 75 h.p. on it so there are some larger boats on it but is way better then longview. Also there on boat docks on it and different types of cover then any other local lakes Quote

kanasbassfisher08 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 well guys went to loz this passed weekend and fished some new water! we were fishing for spoonbill for the first morning and that wasnt going to well due to the water not running out of the truman dam but did manage to catch accouple bass out of the cove we were in but nothing big. so the next day i told my self just bass fish and so thats what we did and i cought alot of bass on C&C big head wobbler in chart and white due to the dirty water and worked good for awhile but slowed down by mid day. we decided to catfish that evening and did really good got a 25lber and several 8 to 12 lb cats all on cut bait. and the next morning they were talking about rain and tornados so we wanted to make our time worth it so i ran about 10 miles through all the snaggers (sure they loved me) but got to a cove i was really familiar with cus our family has a dock there. as we entered the cove i saw a big ball of shad pushed up between two docks and told my buddy to throw his spinner bait up there (he wasnt catching much pretty new to the game) and wam!!! 3lber and i casted wam!!! 4.07lber and we caught about 3 more each and proceeded down the cove and it was by far the best fishing we had all weekend. and then the storm came in and lightning it the tree right in front of us. we put the lightning rods down and ran back. it cleared up about two hours later and we made the run again with 40 mph winds the fish shut off. but i did manage to sink a arrow into a 40 plus big head carp and pulled the arrow as i got it to the boat. catch and release program. but wasnt too bad the river is about 5 feet low right now with water temps in the lower to mid 60s and oh man did mu buddy get burnt he hasnt been to work all week and he texted me today saying im going to the ER lol wow fun times! Skeeter9948 Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 well welcome back did i meet u at mondos that day? I met one guy in there who told me his profile picture was a beer......I'm in there enough that I wouldnt doubt that I ran into you. So I fished the Wednesday night tournament at Wyandotte last night. Holy smokes that lake is tough! I fish it regularly, and always seem to scratch out a few bites, but out of 13 boats only 1 fish was weighed in. I did catch one that was about a half inch from measuring. Quote

The good thing is I live in Wyandotte County so the fees are too bad.....I guess I can justify it since I live less than 5 minutes from the boat ramp. Quote

Welcome...I fished two Wednesday nighter's last year and didn't weigh a fish either time. Did catch a 14.5" largemouth in the marina cove right before weigh in once and considered stomping on it to stretch it to 15. Would have been worth the dead fish penalty to weigh in a keeper! I fished the lake pretty hard last year. It seems like it should be a great lake, but I think it just gets hammered with pressure. My best days were when I fished finesse lures (dropshots, shakey heads, flukes). I don't plan on renewing my license this year. Quote

Haha the one I caught out there last night that was close.....my buddy asked if I brought the fish stretcher haha. You're right about the fishing pressure as there are WAY too many people who meat hunt that lake. Last year I watched a guy next to me while I was catfishing on the bank catch a nice 3 pound largemouth on a worm and toss it into the cooler. It took almost everything I had to not saying anything. I was throwing a green pumpkin shakey head last night. I rarely throw anything other than finesse baits out there which kind of blows. I feel way more comfortable with a jig or big worm in my hand than my spinning rod any day! I'll still fish out there since it is so close to where I live, but I've got to start mixing it up. Anyone know if Olathe Lake has turned on at all? I'd like to make a trip to somewhere this weekend where I can at least have a shot at a decent fish! Quote

Too bad the Wyco TX couldn't weigh in 12" fish would make it much more interesting when more than one or two fish could be weighed. I fished a similar week night group on Perry that was a paper TX we would measure fish and used a chart to get weight. Of course you had to trust everybody because it was on then honor system. Not that much $$ involved but was a lot of fun and plenty of BS on the ramp. Quote

I caught a majority of my keepers at Wyco last year powerfishing with either a jig or 10" worm.
