Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 30, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 30, 2014 Just got back from Melvern without much to report other than tough fishing. 40°-42° water, bluebird sky, and a little wind from the north that completely died off after early morning. Managed one wiper on a PB&J ned rig. Probably could have dropshotted deep but we opted out for an early happy hour. Surprised the water is still that cold down there. That's a nice, fat white bass you go though. Quote
joefish Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Superfluke, I'm good to go along Tuesday. Where, when, your boat? PM or call me with logistics. Quote

conorsixtakc Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 That's not good. Heading there tomorrow. What kinds of areas do I need to avoid? Hard to say after today. The only fish we were marking were pretty deep, but after after today's heat and wind they may have come up a bit. Quote

sizzlefry Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I own 2 pond hoppers if you need to borrow one for any ponds just throwing it out there because so many of you allow me to back seat in yours and that's all I got to offer except dashingly good looks and witty conversation. Â I have a trolling motor and battery but if you use those you need to let me charge them up first. Also I have a nice big private pond to fish out of so pm me a number and if your in my area ( KCK, Shawnee) we can go sometime hers a few sneak peaks of what the pond offered last year 1 Quote
conorsixtakc Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Does anyone fish any the urban ponds in Johnson County? Â If so which ones should be avoided? All of them. They require an additional Johnson County fishing permit. *fart noise* Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 31, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 31, 2014 All of them. They require an additional Johnson County fishing permit. *fart noise* Only Kill Creek, Shawnee Mission Park, and Heritage Lake require the extra JOCO permit. Lots of ponds that are free to fish, however, they all suck  I've caught a few from Mize Lake and I've heard there's some decent fish in the Tomahawk Park ponds but have never personally fished them. Lake Lenexa has some decent fishing. I've had a lot of success at Olathe and Cedar Creek but everyone seems to hate them Quote

SuperFluke Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Wind was too much for a Melvern trip, so I ended up back at Gardner for a few hours this afternoon. Bite was weird, but ended up with 11 fish (all dinks except for one). Caught a couple on a jerkbait early, and then caught a bunch of dinks (and one crappie) on a double crappie tube. Ended up catching the best of the day (maybe 1.5 lbs) back on the trap in an area that I had already fished twice and caught dinks out of both times before (once with jerkbait and once with tube). Wish I would have stuck with the trap because it seemed that's what the better fish were looking for. Maybe just needed to wait until a new wave had moved up to feed  Got one picture today of the road bed out at Gardner. Looks like a great summer spot. Crappie were nearby on the point in about 15' of water. Too windy to stay on them though.  Quote
SuperFluke Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Does anyone fish any the urban ponds in Johnson County?  If so which ones should be avoided? I would second Mize and Lenexa as good bank fishing lakes. Only one I would add is Regency Park. I had pretty good luck out there a few years back from the bank. Quote
SuperFluke Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Cold day at la cygne with @joefish. Caught some on a jerkbait and some on a ned rig. Best was maybe a pound and a half on a jerkbait near the outlet area. Caught three drum and a quite a few whites mixed in as well. La Cygne is a mystery to me. Maybe all the bass were down south. We sure as heck couldn't find them anywhere up north. 1 Quote

SuperFluke Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I'd like to see you get a screenshot of the bridge. Maybe next year! I'm not sure I'll be back to la cygne this year for a number of reasons (not just the recent poor trips). Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 2, 2014 Global Moderator Posted April 2, 2014 I fished Gardner for a few hours this morning. Wanted to give it a try after Flukes recent reports. I'm guessing the cold front knocked them down a little bit. Never had a bite on a trap but caught a decent number on a RC STX jerkbait and one solid one on one of my bladed jigs. I had better luck in the southern half of the lake with areas with deep water near the shoreline being the best. They were really popping the jerkbait on the pause, no doubt kind of bites, just had to cover water in between bites though. Mr. Ned himself was on the water today fishing his namesake rig. He said that they only had 10 bass, 1 catfish, and 1 saugeye between him and his partner. When I first got to the ramp I saw a big fish swim and get stuck in the weeds right by the ramp, turned out to be a 5-6 pound saugeye?! I thought maybe she was on her way out but she zoomed off when I poked at her with my lure retriever and never saw her again. I think I ended up with 12 or 13 with a 16-17 inch fish being the biggest. All of the fish I caught were very fat and healthy looking for a change. Water temps were 48.5-50.4. Quote
SuperFluke Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Intraday update from melvern. Water temps around 46-48. Two smallmouth, one largemouth. Few junk fish. All on jerkbait. Biggest fish was 2.5 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 2, 2014 Global Moderator Posted April 2, 2014 Ryan (Cbass) and I ventured out to the same pond I fished last week. It was a little slower going and the quality wasn't quite as good but we both did get a pretty solid fish each. Mine went 3lbs 14ozs and hit a bruise colored finesse jig, Ryan's was 4lbs 4ozs and ate a Candy Bug finesse jig. 3 Quote
SuperFluke Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Melvern was pretty good to me today. I got bit on two of my first three casts, and was really thinking it was going to be a good day. Between my buddy and I we ended up with 10 SM, 4 LM, 12 whites, and 3 drum. We spent about seven hours on the water, so we worked really hard for the bites that we got. My fish came on a strike king 200 series jerkbait, except for the drum which were really eating the ned rig. I had three fish over three pounds, and several pushing 2.5 lbs. I think every fish I caught was bigger than any bass I caught yesterday at La Cygne. I lost one more 3+ pound smallmouth towards the end of the day that threw my jerkbait as I tried to lip it.  My first 3+ of the day on the jerkbait. This one went 3.3 lbs but looked bigger.   My biggest of the day was a 3.9lb largemouth and was 18" long.   Last big one of the day went around 3.7lbs.  2 Quote
