Vern148 Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 Thanks for the info. But am having heavy rain right now and more projected for tomorrow. May have to postpone for a few days going out in boat. Could try their fish house I guess. Don't know how good that is....just Crappie I would presume. But would be an option for her. Quote

So you'll be dealing with a lake that is high but dropping slowly.  I've seen some good reports for crappie but haven't heard any reports about anything else from Hillsdale. I'm getting antsy to get out there and fish it. I'm hoping the bass spawned and benefited there as much as they seem to have at Melvern. I am hoping this year was good for Clinton and Perry also. Consistently high waters should have helped the spawn. Perry seems to fluctuate a lot in the spring. I think the eggs get left high and dry most years. Now the levels need to go down, so they can open the boat ramps. 1 Quote
KansasBassin Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 Anywhere biting right now within an hour of JOCO? Going out tomorrow morning and can't find a decent report anywhere accept maybe Gardner. Was thinking about Blue Springs but the Star's fishing report says slow. Any thoughts?  Quote

The number of small bass of all 3 species I saw at Melvern was amazing, and they're mostly all to the size where they're going to be too large for a lot of predators to handle, and fast enough/elusive enough to evade being eaten. I would think that the same or similar scenarios would be playing out at those reservoirs as well. Â The Olathe mud puddle treated me well yesterday. Never seen that lake with grass in it, but there was quite a bit and the bass seemed to be enjoying it. First time I'd been on it in about 2 years and probably my best trip ever out there. Â Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 Anybody care to share productive bank fishing waters in the Overland Park area? I will be here rotating at KUMC and staying near Overland Park until Sept 20th and looking for somewhere close to wet a line if I get a free hour or so. Quote

The west side has decent shore access. The fish tend to hang out near shore in the water willows. getting bit is not usually too hard. getting them out of the water willows can be tough from bank.  Quote

Russ E Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 Decided to take a labor day morning trip to Smithville. I was hoping the pleasure boaters were done for the year. caught 9 bass in the 15 to 17 inch range from 8 to 11:30 am,  pitching to shallow brush. then the big boats and jet skis arrived. I actually got buzzed by 2 jet skis in flooded timber. I was surprised one of them didn't hit a tree. Don't know if they were drunk or just stupid. After that I decided to head home. Even though it was not windy , the lake had constant 3 to 4 foot rollers on the way back to the boat ramp. It felt good to get the boat on the trailer. Hopefully this was the last major weekend for the pleasure boats. 2 Quote

There's several I haven't even fished, so I can't say anything about them. Lake Lenexa has good shoreline access and lots of fish, but mostly small. Pay attention that you don't go to any lakes that need a special permit without buying the permit first. You can pick up a FISH atlas at most any Wal Mart in the area and they will show you which bodies of water require an extra permit. 1 Quote

Dirtyeggroll Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Had a little less than an hour yesterday evening. Checked out South Lake Park. Threw a frog along the bank where there were some mats, tossed a micro jig in the shade lines and bounced a green pumpkin wacky rig around. Had a couple of pan fish nibbles on the micro jig and the senko.  This little lake has multiple fountain/aerators near the middle which are just out of casting range where I suspect most of the bass would have been hanging out this time of year. The lake seems very shallow but it was hard to tell for sure with what I was throwing.  I saw a ton of fry along the edge of the bank and a couple of pan fish here and there, which was somewhat reassuring.  There were some others out there bobber fishing with worms and I did not see them catch anything.  Not sure if I’d go back. This is a tough time of year for me as a bank fisherman, so it’s hard to judge. Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 Done bank fishing for a while. Â Learned about oak itch mites over the weekend. What hell did I get my self into? I went to Lenexa on Friday evening and I must've gotten into them bad because I am covered head to in the red welts and haven't slept since then do to the intense itching. Â Didn't catch anything at Lenexa either. Quote

Oak mites usually eat the upper half of your body and chiggers eat the lower half. The KC area has plenty of both, this year. One mite or chigger can bite you multiple times before you realize it. The bites only take a couple weeks to go away. Just for fun we also have a bumper crop of ticks this year. I finally broke down and sprayed my yard last week, so I could go out without getting eaten alive. If I am going out into the woods, I spray my clothes with Permethrin.  I was at Wyandotte this morning. Caught quite a few bass in the 1 to 2 pound range. none of them were very close to shore. morning they were hitting a whopper plopper. later they were hitting a texas rigged worm on the outside edges of weedbeds. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 10, 2019 Global Moderator Posted September 10, 2019 Never ran into any Oak Mites but I've heard they're terrible. Â September is a rough month for fishing around here every year. I went to Springhill in my kayak today and scraped out about 10 in the wind and none the size I go to that lake for. Quote

If the weeds were brown, there were no bass. dinks were in shallow water. bigger fish were in 6-10 foot on the outside edge of weedbeds. don't fish the south end of the lake much in summer. It is usually full of 6-10 inch fish, this time of year. Quote

I am new to Wyandotte lake and just my overview of the lake made me think the south side with all that vegetation would be worth checking out. I've only been over there twice now (plan on going back much more often) and each trip hit the big cove right across the lake from the boat ramp and did pretty well there. Anything else you'd suggest trying there this fall? Hope to get my wife or 8 year old son out there with me. Thanks! Quote
Russ E Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 Problem with the South side is it gets extremely shallow, with no deep water around. Around all of those lily pads, you can barely  float a boat. In late fall and spring bass will head back to those shallows, chasing Baitfish. Most of the bigger fish I have caught there were in 5 to 10 foot of water, but there was always deeper water nearby. The cove across from the marina/boat ramp is Wilson cove. It is probably the best place on the lake if you are on shore. Early morning there is usually a good topwater bite. Later soft plastics produces more for me. Most fish you catch there will be under 15 inches. There are a few big fish. Caught my personal best smallmouth of 4.8 pounds there. Personal best wiper of 7.5 pounds. A few largemouth over 5 pounds . 6.2 pounds was the largest. Quote

Drew03cmc Posted September 13, 2019 Posted September 13, 2019 Guys, I drove to a northern Ozark stream in search of smallies and was not disappointed. I waded 1.5 miles up and back dowmstream and my body is a little achy today. To say the fiah cooperated was an understatement. I caught over 60 fish, 35 or so smallies, 18 or so largemouth and the rest sunfish of some persuasion. I lost the 2 biggest smallmouth and biggest largemouth due to my own error. I used one bait all day. 4 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 14, 2019 Global Moderator Posted September 14, 2019 Gardner was a grind yesterday morning. I should have just put it on the trailer after my first bite, but man did she destroy my frog! 4 Quote
