conorsixtakc Posted May 8, 2018 Posted May 8, 2018 fished corporate challenge this past saturday, we were the only boat out of +100 companies to weigh more than one bass. weighed 3 for 9.24 anchored by this smithville giant my buddy caught up front. that lake is tough but it’s got biggins. 6 Quote

I usually go there for the white bass and wipers. Quote
joefish Posted May 8, 2018 Posted May 8, 2018 It doesn't have a good population of bass. I need to learn how to catch the wipers there are some real nice ones there so I hear and see pics of. Quote

Usually a couple boats there jigging for them. Quote

But since it is, and since this place is full of lurkers... 4 1 Quote

We only had 4 boats Thursday night, but had 2 high 15lb bags caught in 2.5 hours with 4 legit keepers, 1 over 3, 1 over 4, and 2 over 5, and 2 more really close. I think maybe all the work that has been going into stocking the lake might bee showing some signs of paying off. The fish are in full spawn mode. Went to Hillsdale today. First time I had a boat on that lake. spent a good portion of the day looking for fishy looking areas. No giants, but caught enough 1-2.5 pound bass to make it interesting. nearly all of the fish were caught pitching shallow laydowns, on a green pumpkin havoc pit boss. It got windy and rough in the afternoon, so I fished the marina and caught 1/2 dozen on a ned rig. From my first visit ,it seems to have a good population of bass. 1 Quote

We caught one fish last Friday in twin coves area on a shallow crank and one fish on the very opposite end of the lake about halfway up camp branch on a main point flipping stumps. Good luck! 1 Quote
kylek Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 I never do very good at Smithville.... not sure why I keep going back and punishing myself! 1 Quote

The fish are there, but they have seen nearly every bait available. I fish Smithville once a week . Used to have limited success. I still don't catch numbers, but usually catch a few nice sized fish each trip. It is probably one of the best places around the metro to catch a trophy. it is also one of the most expensive,if you don't live in Clay County. I very seldom fish standing timber. I look for lay downs and brushpiles on channel swing banks, with small rock or gravel. Fish wild hold somewhere around these most of the year. This combination is limited on the lake and it takes a lot of running the big motor. With the low water level this spring, a lot of the lay downs are high and dry. To me Lakemaster or Navionics is a must on this lake. Burtons bait and tackle, in Smithville, has memory cards with the coordinates of nearly every brushpile in the lake. He will let you download them into your fish finder. most of the year, creature baits (havoc pit boss is my favorite)and big worms accounts for the majority of fish I catch at Smithville. 2 Quote

I agree with much of the information above. Fishing the standing timber at Smithville can be a recipe for a skunk if one doesn't know which trees to look for and when. When I first started fishing the lake quite a few years ago that is what I did and I had very little success. Find channel banks with laydowns and brush as @Weedwhacker stated, and also, look for underwater channel swings with good drop-offs and either brush or trees on the lip, especially those close to rockier shallow areas. Those are the trees where you will find fish. The rest of the trees should be ignored in my opinion, unless you find one with a structure item that is conducive for bass movements. As for baits, I would add brush hogs and jigs with craw trailers to the list given. 3 Quote

I fish with my father in law and he just got a new Garmin fish finder with the chip and all that good stuff, so we will start looking into this kind of stuff. We are normally bank beaters fishing rip rap or timber. 1 Quote
SuperVehicle001 Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 So my father and I will be renting a boat from Jacomo this Sunday. I've been trying to learn it the best I can to put us on some fish but I really don't want to skunk. There is that one point near the creek inlet that I figure is a good starting point then I'll work my way in. Or should I start super far up the up arm and work deeper? If that fails I plan on flipping the south docks then where Prairie Lee spills into Jacomo, then flip the marina then move onto the spillway where Jacomo runs into Blue Springs. Is that a good plan of attack? Quote
Russ E Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 Decided to take a break from the reservoirs and hit Olathe. was hoping to catch a lot of fish and was not disappointed. I was the only person on the lake all day. planned on flipping the water willows, but they are still pretty thin and were not holding many fish. started fishing a mud minnow TRD on a ned head and caught a bunch of bass. I lost count, but would guess around 50 for the day. there are a ton of 15-17 inch bass in that lake. 4 Quote

It only took 5.5 pounds to win our Thursday night tournament out there a few weeks ago and half the boats didn't catch bass over a pound. Me and @gardnerjigman never had anything that was for sure a bite I don't think. 3 Quote

All I could catch them on was a Ned Rig. 1 Quote
KSbass Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Anyone starting at sun up yet? If so how's the bite? This is my first season going from spring to summer and wasn't sure when that really turns on. 1 Quote

MelvernJM Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 I fished Table Rock on 5/10 and 5/11. All fish were caught on a White Speed shad on main lake points. Fish were out deeper had to drag the speed shad along the bottom with a 1/4 ounce jig. Great trip, my dad and I boated around 100 fish in two days. Very few largemouth, mainly Kentucky’s and Smallmouth. I did catch two Goggle Eye. I had never caught Goggle Eye. Quote

Didn't know what that was. when I lived in Iowa we called them a warmouth. Perry is loaded with those things. they will hit nearly anything that swims by. I have caught them off of baits twice their size. Quote
