Hey guys, trying to understand a little more about some of these Kansas lakes.  Specifically, I have moved to Manhattan from KC and anticipate fishing Milford, Jeffrey Energy Center and Melvern quite a bit this coming year.  I'm used to being able to catch literally tons of bass on shaky heads in all of the Missouri Lakes you could think of - including some of my personal bests.  Curious as to why its seems like the Ned rig and tubes seem more the way people go for finesse fishing at Milford and Melvern?  Thanks.

I think you hear about the Ned Rig a lot in Kansas (especially in the winter) because Ned Kehde lives in Lawrence and there are a lot of published articles out there documenting its use in KS lakes.

Zebra Mussels are the main reason for me. You'll pull your hair out fishing a shakyhead in them and they're in all the smallmouth lakes, but not all the largemouth lakes. Trust me, try to fish one at Melvern, it's easier to just take it out of your tacklebox and throw it straight into the lake than trying to fish it.

Really?  I've fished it tons in lots of other lakes known to have zebra mussels...The Rock, LOZ, Stockton.....is it worse than any of those in your opinion?  Never had much trouble in those lakes.

I can promise you they are far worse.

Thanks for the insight.  Personally, I'm always fishing for quality first - I think we've all caught plenty of dinks in our time.  I've never understood people telling me that a shakyhead doesn't catch quality - seen too many tournaments won on it.

Never dragged a tube much, except maybe on Stockton Lake in MO.  Guess I'll have to work that out a bit.

I love a shakyhead. I'm never too proud to start a day fishing one either. I have had tournaments with @Thefrog22 on LaCygne and LOZ both where my first bigger keepers of the day were on a shakyhead. I love the finesse game (but you won't see me fishing the Ned at LOZ).

I don't think Table Rock or Stockton officially have zebras, at least I've never seen any. There's probably more zebras on the dam at Melvern than throughout all of LOZ, it's like fishing through a pile of razor blades, broken glass, and rusted sheet metal.

Tubes slightly protect the line and knot, Ned rigs rarely touch bottom.

I spent a lot of time at the lower (larger) lake at Jeffrey EC last year when Melvern and Milford were high and muddy. The way the EC lakes are set up, the water level and clarity in that lower lake remains relatively stable. It has good numbers of smallies but not much size. There's a good jerkbait bite in the spring and a fun topwater bite late spring through fall. I ran into some decent wipers using both methods. My most consistent year round bite, however, was swimming a grub.  It gets pretty weedy in the summer if you're into that kind of thing.

Help!  Wyco Parks board meeting January 11,  6:00 PM room 515 KCK City Hall.  Renewal of KU rowing team contract plus the  wanting more dock space in Boy  Scout cove on the agenda.  Would like to see fishermen voice their displeasure with  the rowers on the lake.  They are not local residents and should not be there.

Was just curious. I've had great luck with mine for the year I've had them. Generally just wear a pair of thermals with jeans under them in extreme cold. I like the mobility of them also. I'll have to check out the Frabil ones too!

Same here. If it's really cold I'll wear jeans and thermals, but most of the time the thermals are enough.

Nope, I was fishing with Doc Drew in his Ranger but he was letting me run the trolling motor.

No, we didn't have much time and those runs hurt.

Nice one. I'm the guy that was in the white and navy blue triton. I got a little cold and impatient with a new angler in the boat and called it quits after an hour and a half.

You were next to us at the outlet right? I saw your backseater in jeans and it made me cold. I could feel the wind through 2 sets of thermals, a sweatshirt, a hoodie, and my 100 mph suit, no way he wasn't feeling it.

I was feeling it in my Simms suit. He's my wife's cousin and he insisted on going and then he had a time with the fluoro line on the spinning reel I had for him and then he got his glove caught in the hooks. So we had a short day on the water because I didn't get to do much fishing.

I saw him fighting that glove for it seemed like half an hour. Cold weather certainly brings a whole new set of obstacles.
