Like your video's but it's a little concerning that you don't have more respect for the fish you catch.

Without going on a 5 paragraph rant defending my conservationist ways as a local fishing guide in northeast KS, I'll leave it at this:

I could care less about a drum. I threw it up in the air and it landed in the water and it swam away, but really only mostly because I didn't have a bluff wall in front of me to throw it at, or a 9mm to blow a big hole in it.

Just a serious question, have you ever tried eating them?   I have not eaten freshwater drum, but from what I have read and seen it looks like very nice meat.

Is this a serious question though? If you have to eat drum then I feel bad for you that you can't catch Walleye or Crappie.

ON THAT NOTE....

If you're on BassResource defending a drum, I don't think this is the forum for you

Nope, and don't plan on it anytime soon.

Thanks for your opinion.   I guess the way I was looking at it this.   There are a lot of younger people that visit this site, and probably even watch some of your videos.   When you openly promote the mistreatment of wildlife, that is a decision that you make, but please think about the effect it may have on someone else.  Maybe they just start throwing all fish against a wall, or practicing poor release techniques.    Guess I just have a difference in opinion that you.

Oh, and I am not defending a drum in particular, I am supporting the proper handling of all wildlife.

So you probably don't eat bass either.  So here is something to think about a minute.   A drum is a very strong fish, and will fight harder pound for pound than most any large mouth bass.   If we are not eating either one, and just fishing for the enjoyment of the fight, what makes one fish superior to the other.      I mean it's kind of like how do you decide which butterflies to pull the wings off of.

I think you're looking a bit too deep into the subject. Everyone in this forum (who are 90% all friends who fish together fairly regularly except for the lurkers), know I am a staunch conservationist. That being said, that's all I really have to say about that and don't have to defend much else.

Cool, I figure most guys that visit this site fall into the same category. I have been on the same water fishing the same fish at the same time you have many times, and truly believe what you say, as I have observed it myself.   You seem like a good person,   it was just an observation, not a personal attack.

It's funny how you know which one of you guys are friends and which one's are the new ones. Wonder why people don't post that much when everyone jumps all over them.

I like to think we are a pretty tight group of guys. In all walks of life it's probably not a good idea to come into a defined group and bash a person.

The rant is understood to a point, but not necessary at all considering it's a drum and not a "sport fish".

Being friends in great and sharing view is often what creates friendships.   However sometimes we rush to the defense of a friend at the expense of remaining objective.   I mentioned in a previous post that it was not an attack, just an observation.

I actually did try once. I had a year I caught so many I started calling myself the Drummer Boy. They were so Bony I couldn't get a boneless fillet so I threw it out.

As far as them being fun to catch I think they are a blast!

It's all good, I would hope that we could all be friends and still have a difference of opinion.   We are all here for the same reason, we enjoy fishing and sharing about it.   Nothing personal on my end.

I just don't think a high toss where the fish landed nose down (in water...it's home) is mistreatment. Just my opinion.

My thought with drum, they're a predator fish, a surprisingly effective predator fish who can have a effect on the food chain. As most folks know, they have very little fishing pressure on them and next to zero of those caught are harvested. This leads them to the potential to be overpopulated. I'll admit to tossing them on the bank, raccoons and buzzards have to eat, but I never do it in front of anyone or near anyone's dock or home. No, it's not the best way to do it, but like every fish they need to be harvested and once they're big enough to be caught they have almost no predators.

I respect everyone's opinion on the subject and you're all welcome in my boat regardless of your view on it :)

My uncle swears they're the best eating fish in Kansas. He also lives in a shack with no phone and just recently got indoor plumbing so take that with a grain of salt.

They don't scavenge and are obviously closely related to red and black drum that are very popular food fish so they probably are pretty decent eating if prepared right.

I just got back from New Orleans. To my surprise, drum was featured on several fancy restaurant menus. But I think that's red or black drum. I thought of this "controversy" as I gladly ordered something else.

Drum in NOLA is redfish.  Drum in Kansas is a freshwater redfish, lol.

My wife's grandma was showing me pictures of fish they caught at her dad's farm when she was a child.  They had a farm that had bull creek frontage near Paola just south of town. Huge carp & catfish mostly.  She said they ate carp all the time and always thought it tasted great.  Then she said. "we were so poor back then we were just happy to have something to eat".  My dad has told me of eating carp when he was growing up too.  I am probably in the minority here because I would definitely try any of it.  Especially if someone else cleans and cooks it a weigh they claim it to be good.  I never eat fish because my wife hates fish, but I even ate the occasional bass growing up, never thought they tasted "bad".  All that being said, I haven't kept any fish other than trout(which I give away) for over 10 years, but I don't catch the tasty ones, leave that to @Ondrejka.  One of these days someone needs to host a big fry.  If it's in the spring I can try to provide some Morels.

I have enough Walleye, and some Crappie in the freezer to feed the group. Rarely do we make onesie-twosie meals at home, I always keep enough for a big fish fry for everyone to enjoy. We ought to plan that out...

I'd be more than glad to host  it at my new house? I've got a couple turkey fryers...

Someone bring some Drum.

That is way cool, I think it would be awesome if you guys really did give it (drum) a try and report back on it.  Maybe if it were as good as some say, it would help control the population a little.
