Ethos rods are on sale at Academy for anyone needing to pick up a new one.

Sweet!!!!! I'll have to show some self control tomorrow when I'm there. That composite cranking rod is calling my name.

Went down to the Elk River this past weekend with some friendsand floated from Noel down to Cowskin access.  My boat caught about 75 Smallmouth but only 2 over 15 inches.  The biggest was a 17.5 inch, didnt have a scale with me, but I would guess around 3 pounds or so.   Also caught some largemouth but not any good ones. It was an awesome float and only saw 2 canoes besides the guys I was floating with the whole day.

I've only partied on the Elk, but I've meant to take a smallmouth trip. Would you recommend the stretch of river you floated, or would you have done anything differently?

I have floated pretty much the whole river, except for the last two miles from cowskin into OK (Grand Lake).  I think I prefer the first half better.  From the junction of the little sugar and big suger creeks down to MT Shira Access, or even all the way to NOEL.  The stretch we floated this time (from below the Dam at Noel all the way to Cowskin Access) was much less crowded, there are very few outfitters that float this section.  But other than the one good smallmouth we were catching small fish.  The upper stretch we have down much better fishing for largemouth, and have gotten some decent smallies as well.  Last year we caugh a couple LGM over 3+ and the year before my friend had one just short of 5 pounds.

That Smallmouth I caught this trip that was close to 3 is the biggest I've gotten from the ELk, and it was very close to the Cowskin Access.  I have heard that Shad will run up towards cowskin from Grand Lake and that some believe that bigger fish are on that stretch because of it.

Today is my birthday so I decided to play hooky. Never gotten to fish on my actual birthday so I said screw it and took my fiance to Lone Star. Ran into Ned Kehde and his wife as I was putting in. No giants today, plenty of the Lone Star specials and this 2.82, but really just nice not to be at work. Fished one rod and one Brush Hog for 3 hours. Nice afternoon to have the lake to myself.  :occasion1:

edit: yeah, didn't really need the net, but she felt a lot bigger and I already had the net in my hand.

I've fished the Elk a few times. I could probably fish that river for the rest of my life and never have to fish a different body of water. Even when it's busy during the summer I've always done well. I've had smallies to 19" and one largemouth that was 4.5 pounds and only 20" long. It's a beautiful river too.

It was painful to float it without being able to wet a line, the lady and I got dragged into one of those big party floats and it killed me inside to not be fishing... last time I make that mistake. I've been meaning to get back ever since. We floated it late July, which is what happens when a girl plans a float trip without understanding water levels :Idontknow: . The water was super low and we had to drag quite a bit, but I spoke with some locals and they said they were hammering quality smallmouths from 18-20" on watermelon red horny toads. They were busting all around us.  :cry3:

Anyone need a G Loomis Bronze back spinning rod? I have a SMR 8825-SP. Medium power fast action 7ft 4 in that I really don't care for. It is just too long for me to be comfortable with. I have used it maybe 8 or 10 times. Sells for $265 new, I'll take $150 for it.

I went to Lone Star last night from about 4-8. What a beautiful night. Not to mention fishing was pretty good. I started with my 3rd cast catching a 19.5" 3.47lb largemouth on a squarebill. Next cast was a 6" smallmouth. I probably caught 5 fish in the first 10 minutes. Then the little wind that was there died down and something started busting shad out in the middle of the cove. I spent probably over 30 minutes trying to catch whatever it was and was unsuccessful. I went back to fishing and catching bass. I found that the key was burning the small squarebill in about 3' of water so that it would crash against bottom continuously. If I wasn't hitting bottom, I wasn't catching fish. The two best baits for me were Havoc Craw Fatty pitched into cover and just deadsticking it or burning the KVD 1.0. Here is a picture of the first fish of the day. The fish had a deformed jaw and doesn't look as big as it was.
