Mr_Scrogg Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Yea it is, Clayton.... suppose to be a tough lake during summer. Guess like LaCygne. Quote
pbrussell Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Melvern wasnt very good fishing on saturday. Caught a couple of handfuls of smallmouth. There was no consistent pattern, and the fish just werent really biting.  Despite that, I did have some of the most explosive strikes on a spook I have ever seen, they were just few and far between.  I ended up giving a guy a tow from the dam to the Eisenhower ramp, and that took a good 45 minutes out of my day; but I was happy to help.  1 Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 Â Well my full day to fish is always Friday but I usually get in a partial day on Thursday after I get off work. I'm probably transitioning to night fishing after this week (would be this week but if I go anywhere will likely have the wife with me and she doesn't do night time fishing). I'll let you know if I have an open spot. Â Â Â Â I'm usually pretty available on Fridays for all day, or any day after work really. I am usually home by 3. I used to do a lot of night fishing back home, but it's been awhile. I'm ok with anyone man, just want to learn some new stuff, make some friends and of course catch some fish! Quote
Enphrared Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Went out to cat claw lake at james a reed last night. Only got a nibble after 2hrs of fishing where I caught a couple of nice one's a few days ago. Fish were nipping the surface all over the place, probably should've tried some top water variances, and moved around the lake more, but stuck with a weighted/unweighted senko and shaky head. Almost made it to dark, but the thunderstorm chased me off. lol Quote

Super User Hi Salenity Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 I didn't have daycare today so I took the kids for a boat ride along the way we picked up a few friends 4.0# This one liked the taste of tungsten The kids in the Jacuzi Lol I think I need to check my scales this is another 5.10 1 Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 I lost the biggest fish I ever hooked into today. No clue what it was. I was using a 8' rod and 50# braid. I set the hook and the fish turned and started picking up speed until I broke off? I honestly would have thought in open water I had enough of a rod/reel/line for anything. I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1 Quote

Super User Hi Salenity Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 That one was fairly loose. I normally lock down my drag on my jig rods if I'm not using braid but I lost a nice fish in a tournament the other day at the boat and I thought I may have ripped the hook out so I started backing down on the drag a bit. I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had that happen at Coffey this late winter. Fishing the hot water, a fish annihilated a spinnerbait. After 15 minutes of a fight and a very boring two minute long video of that fight, the fish started coming up. It came up to the surface and rolled... Huge blue cat! It made one roll and the spinnerbait just fell out of its mouth. I was happy and sad I didn't have to get it in the boat. Getting it in the boat would have been a much better video than the fight. That I am sure of! Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 I'm figuring Flathead but it just came off like a Gar or something with teeth? You can ask Sizzle I know what a BIG gar is like I got one to the boat earlier this year on a jerkbait. This felt like a truck leaving a stop sign! Quote

I had this happen last year flipping a lizard up in shallow boat slips. Guessing around 30lb flathead. I set the hook, saw him for a flash in the shallow water (guessing in that same flash he saw the boat) and I never got him off the bottom again. Could literally feel him grinding the line... Was a heck of a ride while it lasted, felt like 30 minutes but was probably 30 seconds! Quote

I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like you snagged a carp on the way up or maybe a monster gar caught you on the way in. There's still supposed to be a few stripers in La Cygne that they stocked quite awhile ago. I don't see a big flathead catching your bait as you reeled it back in fast. A big blue cat could have done it though. Big flatheads usually don't take off real fast, just a steady, heavy pull.  On a side note I don't understand how you catch fish on a jig out there?! All the times I've fished there I bet I haven't caught 10 on a jig total. Quote

Doesn't necessarily work every time, but...  Here's my recent success story. 1/2 ounce to 3/4 ounce football. Colors- Missouri craw and black and blue are the best producers. Trailers- throw a yum wooly bully on the back if the fish are active. A beaver if they are not. Technique- Drag, drag, drag. I do not hop the jig at all unless it's stuck on a rock. Where do I fish it? Rock, anywhere from 5-20 fow. I don't even bother with wood out there with my jigs. Occasionally I take a few fish hopping a jig around the grass lines, but for the most part it's dragging in rock. Quote
pbrussell Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Also, as an aside, if the fish are really active and dragging a jig is working, I have found a biffle hard head type jig with a biffle bug type bait can be very effective in the same areas. Just real it in slow, ticking the rocks... Quote

SuperFluke Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Fished NEBO and Perry today with a couple brothers. Didn't do that great at either one but still put a few in the boat. Shallow crank at nebo did most all our damage and shakeyhead or tube at Perry. Biggest was 2.8lbs on a shakeyhead in rock creek arm. My brother had a 4 or 5 lb'er inhale his shallow crank near a dock in rock creek, but a "reel malfunction" prevented him from setting the hook. Fun day regardless. Side note...talked to a local fishing the bank at nebo. Guy said he caught a 23" lm on a beetle spin and catches fish in the pads on a frog all the time. We tried frogging the pads for a bit bit never had a single strike. Quote

Almost all my jig fish from La Cygne have been in wood  I catch way more fish on shakyheads, cranks, traps, swimbaits and spinnerbaits out there. I do normally fish a brush jig or finesse jig instead of a football head so maybe I'll have to try a football head instead next time. I can honestly only remember catching 4 fish on a jig all the times I've fished one out there, 2 dinks and a 5 pounder out of the river, then one that was 4 and change off a laydown by the shallow Linn Co ramp.   Not like it matters, might not make it to La Cygne much this winter without a boat Quote
Enphrared Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Spent 2.5hrs at Lake Nell (James A Reed) last night. Caught a small largemouth off a rat-l-trap, and ended up losing that lure later in the evening (>.< just bought it too). Ran a bunch of T.rig and shakey head and only got a few bites. Lot of stuff feeding at the top (prob bluegill). Ordered a few super fluke variations and hope to try them out there next week. Quote

It's been weird. Most of my fish have wanted to play with jigs rather than anything else. I haven't been able to get on a good crankbait bite out there to save my life.  What's up with your boat man? Selling? Needing repairs? Quote

Selling? Needing repairs? Sold it a couple months ago. Hard part for me is having week days off when most people are at work. I've got a 15' johnboat with a 15hp tiller drive and 43lb bow mount motorguide that's going to have to get me through for now. If you ever have a Thursday or Friday off let me know and I'd be willing to weigh the back of your boat down for you. Quote
