conorsixtakc Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 I'll be fishing from my buddy's back seat on Melvern this weekend. It'll be the first time I've ever fished this lake, and he's not terribly experienced on it either. I smell a sitcom! Any suggestions you guys have would be greatly appreciated. The only things that have come to mind so far are jerkbaits and squarebills. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 25, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 25, 2014 Jerkbaits, wiggle warts, shakyheads, jigging spoons. I've heard about something called a "Ned rig?" I guess it catches fish out there once in awhile too. 1 Quote

The only things that have come to mind so far are jerkbaits and squarebills. I've had pretty good success from time to time on a tube as well along rocky areas. Last year at Melvern, I caught my biggest largemouth on a swimbait and my biggest smallmouth on a squarebill. Of course, you can't beat the ned for numbers. 1 Quote

I plan on keeping it my little secret if I start getting back seated! thx for the feedback. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted March 25, 2014 Super User Posted March 25, 2014 I may try and sneak to Melvern Friday, if I do I'll let you know how I do. 1 Quote

bassh8er Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Just the bladed jigs for now. He has the pictures and descriptions to put them on his website but for now they're just in store. What's Mondo? Are you selling your baits that you make now? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 26, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 26, 2014 What's Mondo? Are you selling your baits that you make now? Mondo tackle is a local tackle store and yes he is carrying my baits. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 26, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 26, 2014 Boys they were tearing up the home made bladed jigs today! That last one was the biggest of the day, 4lbs 6ozs. They were crushing the bait, slack lining me on the strike so I was having to reel like crazy just to keep up with them and I lost several like that and missed a few that slammed it but didn't get the bait. Retrieving it very, very slowly after letting it sink to the bottom at the start of the cast. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 27, 2014 Global Moderator Posted March 27, 2014 Where was that? a FISH pond. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Only a thousand or so in the state.... 400 within 2 hours of KC. Lol Quote
Doc-Drew Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 By the way, congrats super fluke! Congrats blue on having mondo sell your chatterbaits. I see that you changed head types. Are you noticing any change in the action? Quote

Lol Yeah and so far I've found about 3 that are worth fishing, that's why the vagueness By the way, congrats super fluke! Congrats blue on having mondo sell your chatterbaits. I see that you changed head types. Are you noticing any change in the action? The main reason for the head change was the hooks on the football heads is pretty small. I've never had a problem with them but it was a concern for Raymond and since it's his store I changed them. I do love the new hooks though, those 6/0 Eagle Claws are extremely sharp and could double as a gaff if you needed them too. Since I made the switch I've lost far fewer fish with them than I did with the football heads. Quote
Wachati Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Yeah and so far I've found about 3 that are worth fishing, that's why the vagueness Is my honey hole one of them? Let me know when you want to go back, I'm itching for another monster. I also have another pond for you, haven't hit it in a year. Congrats on the baits, I went in and saw them during my tour at mondo. Do you have any of my molds, I can't remember. Doing some spring cleaning and can't find a couple. Yet finding things in the garage can be tricky. Quote

A vast majority of them suck badly, so this one is one of those rare gems that's actually worth fishing. I have a couple new ones to try this year whenever I get around to it. I'm pretty sure I have your brush jig mold but that's the only one I can think of. What's the other one you're missing and I'll look next time. Quote

Yeah that's the only one, I don't need it just making sure I didn't lose it somewhere in my garage cleaning. I think I gave the other one to Curt. Quote

SuperFluke Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Well boys, today marks the first day of my "fishcation". I've got the next week off, and I'm treating it as sort of a fishing holiday before the baby comes. I've got pretty much the whole week booked, and I forsee more than one trip to Melvern. (Sizzle or Joefish - want to go somewhere on Tuesday?). More reports coming as the week goes on. Today I had the morning free, so I hit Gardner again and dragged my brother along. Day started frosty/cold and a little windy, but I'm really starting to like this lake. We caught 10 total fish with several nice fish over two pounds. Rattletrap bite is starting to get going...all came on the trap except for one on a jig in a little pocket with some chunk rock. Fish are off the bank in 3-7' of water. You'll find them wherever the green nasty stuff is starting to bloom as long as there is deep water nearby. Rip it through the moss or reel slowly over the top. Bite is much better right now up north than down south... Probably my biggest of the day (2.5lbs on strike king red eye shad...sexy shad color): Overachiever of the day: If you're into crappie, they are getting ready to go. I found them stacked up like crazy in 8-15' on a point and in the channel nearby. Wish I had taken a screenshot from the Lowrance to show you guys. I'll remember next time. It was crazy..they were stacked solid from about 2' deep to just off the bottom. Won't be long until they're on the bank. Quote
cbass12 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Nice going! That's a healthy fish for Gardner. Quote
conorsixtakc Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Just got back from Melvern without much to report other than tough fishing. 40°-42° water, bluebird sky, and a little wind from the north that completely died off after early morning. Managed one wiper on a PB&J ned rig. Probably could have dropshotted deep but we opted out for an early happy hour. Quote

That first one is about as big as any I've seen out of the main lake for a long time. That used to be a great lake before the LMBV got to it and killed off all the big fish. Maybe they're starting to come back a little bit. It sure would be nice since it's less than 2 miles from my house Quote
