For Us KC Area Guys - Fishing Reports

Was a darn cold morning and it didn't warm up that much.  I think it took the whole drive home for my hands to thaw out.  I couldn't get bit in the normal places early in the morning, so I started cruising around.  Found a bank where the white bass were just on fire.  Was throwing a strike king caffeine shad, and getting the rod ripped out of my hands.  Those were in the back of a large creek, and about halfway out of that creek I got my best fish of the day in about a 18" of water.  A 3.5 lb largemouth on the caffeine shad on a flat near a secondary point.  Caught several dinks after that on ned rig and tube.

 

I flew solo today, so my pictures aren't great.  Blue might have one of me with my big fish.

Scrogg is not exaggerating the size of the two he lost. The first one was almost black and easily 4 pounds, the second might have been the biggest smallie I'd ever seen at melvern. We thought he had either a flathead or a big walleye at first, then it went airborne   We got into the whites north of the state park ramp and I caught a nice chunky 16" largemouth swimming a big bite cane thumper through the top of a brush pile. Then a little farther down the bank I caught the spot Scrogg mentioned, biggest spot I've caught at melvern.

Are the coves north of the Eisenhower Park ramp worth fishing? 

 

We have decided to venture out there for sure this Sunday.  I plan on fishing the dam and the area around the marina.  Looking for some more places to try. 

 

Hoping to put my father in law on his first smallmouth bass :-)

The spotted bass I caught was north of the east state park ramp. There is decent depth there. We found a bunch of white bass all the way in the back of the cove in about 5' of water.

What were the white bass biting?  I wouldn't mind getting into a mess of those

I was using a 1/4 ounce swimbait jighead and a 5" big bite cane thumper. Picked up a 1/4 oz. red eye shad while we were into them and couldn't get bit. They really wanted a swimbait.

What were the white bass biting?  I wouldn't mind getting into a mess of those

 

Soft swimbait was the ticket for me.  3/16 oz strike king swim bait jig head and strike king swim'n caffeine shad.  Mine were on the bank directly opposite from the west eisenhower ramp.  The point on the edge of that little pocket was money.  Good luck!

I was using a RI Little Dipper. They didnt seem to like that too much. :\

I caught a few smallmouth and a couple whites on a Keitech Swing Impact on a 1/4oz head. Only way I could get them to eat it was to let it sink to the bottom and then reel slow enough to keep it ticking along the rocks. Caught a really nice drum on it too

I did find alot of the bigger smallies werent hammering it. Just subtle, weighted feeling.

If it was a thump, it was a white or a drum.

went to Olathe a couple times this week and caught whites guess im the white bass king now. they were chasing shad in the shallows. Melvern same thing caught several whites  in small square bill shad that I didn't put down all day when I probably should have. Salenity stole my 4 pound smallie  I will let him explain  back in the cove at the end of the dam opposite of the outlet. thanks for taking me out salinity I really enjoy learning new things from new boaters.

I wouldn't be afraid to fish out to12' of water on the dam but if you don't know the lake I'd beat the banks everywhere else

went to Olathe a couple times this week and caught whites guess im the white bass king now. they were chasing shad in the shallows. Melvern same thing caught several whites  in small square bill shad that I didn't put down all day when I probably should have. I'm sure you learned a few new curse words and that I suck with a trolling motor in the wind.

BTW, don't be afraid to throw a Ned. I caught our biggest fish of the day (4#) in about 2-3 fow on a Ned.

And another thing I taught Sizzle was, your bait won't catch fish unless it's in the water. LOL.

Most of our fish were in less than 6' but we started to get bit pretty good off the dam in about 20-23 feet right towards the end of the day.

Went out to Olathe for awhile today. Spent most of the day pounding the same spot for saugeye, whites, and wipers. Ended up with no whites or wipers but I did get 3 saugeye, 19.5, 19, and 17 inches. Also had a half dozen bass that were all less than 12". Each one of the saugeye I cleaned had eggs in it already.

Does DVTstand behind thie work?   I sent a reel to them for the first time and since it came home the anti reverse works intermittently.   Caused several major backlashes and missed hook sets last week!

We must have just missed you. We did Kill Creek in the am and Olathe in the pm. Caught trout on square bill at Kill Creek. Was unbelievable. Did real well at Olathe, seen a few eagles. Fished the wind at Olathe.

I didn't know they stocked trout in Kill Creek? Do any good at Kill Creek other than trout? I almost went out there instead of Olathe but Olathe has been good in the fall for me before.

Zero'd at Kill Creek. The place was packed when we got there, no boating etiquette on the water. The trout were a blast, I wanted to keep them baaaaad. I think lack of shad in the water makes that place impossible in cold water. 53 degrees was the warmest we found. We are doing Gardner tomorrow.
