Very nice.

Went out to Melvern myself today.  I got there right up at sun up and the water was glass.  Not a breath of wind and not a cloud in the sky.  That's the first I had ever seen Melvern lake that.  Fishing was really tough in the morning.  I tried a variety of baits and the only thing I could seem to get bit on was a wacky rigged senko.  And those were all largemouths.  Finally about noon the wind picked up to just about perfect for my taste and the sky clouded up a bit and the smallies came out to play.  Caught a couple on a square billed crankbait and the rest on a ned rig.  Only decent fish of the day was a THICK 16"er that I would love to run into again in a couple years.  I thought for sure I had a 4+ on at first.   In hindsight I wish I would have taken a pic of it.

I ended up leaving around 3:00 because I had to get home for Mothers Day dinner, but wish I could have stayed at least a couple hours longer because it seemed like the fishing was really picking up.

Caught her on a square bill. Four and a quarter pounds. She was very fat. I was not expecting a brown fish this size in perry. Watch out melvern? attachicon.gifimage.jpg

Glad perry finally treated you right.  What a catch!

We did mothers day stuff in the morning so I got to sneak out to DGCO Sunday afternoon for some of that amazing weather and some easy bassin'  The dark colored plastics and spinner baits were both working ok so I dug into the Retro Tackle from my grandparents old boxes and caught a few on the Mepps "Black Fury"  :)

I'll have to post a couple of pictures, but this past weekend we had a tourney out on Wilson.  With everyone talking about smallies on here we absolutely slayed them.  Over a two day period we caught and released over 50 fish with 10 of them being 17 inches plus.  Caught the majority of them on a drop shot of all things.

Just an FYI..... In Kansas by law you can only have 2 hooks on the Alabama Rig.

;-)

Other than that still slow. Lots of males

Unless its not public water, then I could toss a double Bama Rig with 10 hooks!!!!!! Lol

Oh yea... I bought a boat.

Anyone fish Shawnee Mission Park much? Supposedly a couple years ago they stocked about 1200 5-6 inch smallmouth in there. A friend from work sent me a picture today of a 12-13" smallie he caught this morning on a zinker. I haven't fished it much in the last ten years as the bass population had a big decline. Be nice to have another smallmouth fishery close to home.

Only for trout but not in three years, maybe worth a shot!

I've been fishing Shawnee Mission Park for wiper this Spring with a fair amount of success. I've caught nice largemouth there (see pic), but nothing 4# or over. Never caught any smallies there. The attached pic is from like 5 years ago, so ignore the baby face.

I borrow the wifes broomstick, and get some clothes line cable. By the end of the day I look like Popeye.

Do you have a snagging rod to throw that thing?

I bet I could toss it on my swimbait rod. The main head is probably 1/2oz or less, put 7 1/8 or 1/4oz heads on it and add the plastics and I'd be around 3 ounces. My Mattlures hardbass is 3.5 ounces and I don't have any problem tossing that thing.

Haven't caught a smallie there but did catch a few LMB

Has anyone been out to Smithville Lake lately?  I am planning on going this weekend and looking for some advice.  The report shows they are biting pretty good on spawning banks but I don't know where to start.

Thanks in advance for any info you guys can share.

Looks real nice.  Sweet casting deck. Dang practical setup.

Lemme guess: $500 off if you took the kids with the boat?

Kyle, I'm not an expert by any means, but I do fish Smithville a few times a year.  All the areas I've circled are fairly well known, and will likely be crowded.  However, they've all produced for me in the past.  I struggled to catch any the two times I was out this year, but it was back when it was still pretty frigid out there.

Red - Easy to get to

Green - Harder to get to, be careful in the trees and look for the marked trees for a safe route.  You might wait for somebody and then follow them in...

Hopefully this image works:

kylek,  The main lake gets beat up bad by recreational fishermen that don't know the channels so the best fishing is going to be past the bridges on Camp Branch or Little Platt but that is also where a lot of lower units are lost if you don't know your way around.  I will be up there all weekend in a tournament and could show you around some.  If interested pm me and I will give you my cell number.

We decided to pass due to the tournaments being there this weekend.  I appreciate the help.  We fish there some but never do very well at all.
