I have a 40 Merc with no fire and I'm tired of throwing parts at it. Frank's Marine in Lansing, Ks is where I take mine. They do good work and are very reasonably priced. Cabela's takes you behind the woodshed in hourly labor rates, don't know about Bass Pro's rates but I'm sure they're high just because they can be. Turn around at Cabela's is terrible too. I took my old Ranger there once during the summer and it took nearly 2 months to get it back, just to get the steering bled. I've heard good things about US boats from friends and it's where my dad takes his boat but never dealt with them personally. Denny, the guy at the boat house at Wyandotte is a wizard with older, smaller hp motors. He got my old 15hp Johnson to where it fires up the first pull every time after it wouldn't even turnover when I bought it. Not the friendliest guy around but he knows older motors as good as anyone I've ever seen. He gets those 30 year old motors that fools leave locked in ice at the boat docks all winter to start every year anyways. Quote

Denny, the guy at the boat house at Wyandotte is a wizard with older, smaller hp motors.   I just went into Cabela's boat shop to get a couple wheel seals for my trailer and WOW . . . . . Denny Poeterfield at Wyandotte is a really good tech on the older stuff and reasonable.... he did some work for me on a late 80's 60hp  Evinrude one time and really got her going.  I would not be hesitant to take my stuff to US Boatworks, as I posted earlier they rebuilt my locked up Johnson and got it done in a week so I could make my smallmouth trip to Ontario. I've walked a lot of the bank the last couple weeks out there looking for baits and that's the first dead fish other than a drum or shad I've seen. I've got 16 cranks sitting on my lure building table waiting on new split rings and trebles that I've found out there though. If I could find a market for bobbers, empty shotgun shells, or rusty crappie jigs I'd be sitting pretty! Quote

Too much current to cope with It's stronger than Coffey, probably twice as strong. Good thing is you could pull your yak to the end of the point at the outlet and fish a lot of the outlet and be out of the current. Quote

I've fished them once from a kayak and did pretty well but it wasn't a fishing kayak and it was a little spooky. I'd be willing to try them again but that's a long haul for you. Quote

Spur of the moment trips need to be less than 1.5 hr trip commute. My kayaks are super stable. Commander120, I can stand and fish comfortably. Other is a Pescador 12.0, which is a Tarpon120 clone. Not a standing yak, but still super stable. Assuming they're still public access again this year I'd be interested in fishing them again. Check out the intersection of Highways 4 and 16 in Valley Falls, KS. All those pits on the southeast side of the intersection have been on the FISH atlas for the last few years at least. You'd have to carry your gear down a fairly step hill and there is only 2 pits you can launch into to get to the other pits but it's very doable. I caught largemouth up to 4lbs and lots of quality fish over 2 pounds, some huge sunfish, and even a walleye. With the clear water it would probably be a fun trip when they're eating jerkbaits in the spring. Quote

Some of those Atlas places are gold. Others I've found stink. I know one of the atlas ponds we fished last year was really shallow but had some really nice fish in it. The best cover was right in the guys back yard and he decided that portion was off limits when we were there. I was going to explain to him that's not how it works but decided against it. There are plenty of pits and plenty of water in that one area to spend an entire day there. The three bigger pits are probably 5-10 acres apiece so there's plenty of water to cover but the high banks protect you from the wind pretty well also. Quote

I love fishing the atlas ponds, We have a decent one in Butler county, but I have to travel decent distance for most.....what are some of your other faves? The only good ones I've been to other than those pits in Valley Falls were one in Douglas Co and then one down by Pittsburg that I fished too early in the year but still did pretty well. Quote
