Mr_Scrogg Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Probably going to have an empty back seat this Thursday if anyone is interested, just let me know. Where ya heading? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 21, 2013 Global Moderator Posted January 21, 2013 Where ya heading? If the wind cooperates I'm going back to Coffey County. If it's supposed to be more than I'd like then I'll be heading to La Cygne. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I'd love to have another shot at Coffey County, but I don't think my schedule (well, my wifes schedule) will cooperate this Thursday. Keep posting and I'm sure the planets will align one of these times I can ride shotgun with ya. Seems like you boys know how to fish ways I'm not proficient at. I'm use to the thick of thickest, where you need 55lb braid to pull 3lb fish up with 10 lbs of slop attached. Using electronics, fishing structure, and places I can't see with my own 2 eyes are GREEK to me. Quote

Supposed to be nice Wednesday. If you could stand going when you get off work I might be able to get away, just have to get daycare figured out. Quote
pbrussell Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Been a while since I've logged in. Is it spring yet? I'll play this game, even though I'm a little late.   Favorite Rod / Reel: Probably my new skeet reese spinnerbait rod/ lews speed spool. I didn't get to use it much as I bought it late in the season, but that thing is smooth as butter.   All-around line: The new "improved" trilene formulas. That stuff is pretty great for the price.   Jig / Shakeyhead / Football: Didn't do great with jigs this year. I would say I swam jigs a lot more this season, and had success with it when other things weren't working. Generally a 3/8 ounce jig in pbj with a paca chunk trailer.   Crankbait: Strike king 1.5, 2.5, and red eye shad were all big producers for me this year   Finesse Bait: Not only the ned rig, but also a finesse style with 4" netbait worm.   Topwater: Poppers.   Plastic: Havoc Pit Boss, Tubes of all colors/sizes Quote
pbrussell Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Weight (or length if you didn't have a scale): 6.3 Largemouth, 3.5 smallmouth (pb)   Lure: Crankbaits   Pattern: Targeting rip-rap, rock and grass   Lake: Melvern   Time of Year: April, and fall in general (both of my big fish mentioned came late season). Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 24, 2013 Global Moderator Posted January 24, 2013 cbass (Ryan) and I hit Wolf Creek after I got off work this morning. Didn't get any big wipers, or crappies, or bass. Other than big white bass we didn't catch anything real big but man the big whites were eating big time. As soon as we launched I spotted a bunch of gulls diving to the north of the ramp so we headed there first instead of the outlet. Ryan caught one his first cast and I missed one and then caught one my next cast. Flutter spoons, traps, swimbaits, and deep cranks were the baits of choice for the whites. The largemouth we caught were almost all on flukes. We put 110 fish in the boat, probably at least 90 of them were whites. Lots of doubles and even one triple thanks to Ryan's solo double. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 25, 2013 Global Moderator Posted January 25, 2013 Nope, took the puppy out to Hillsdale and walked the bank looking for lures then walked the woods looking for sheds, not much luck doing either. Found 3 crankbaits, 2 of them unusable, and a bunch of bobbers. Didn't find any sheds but I did find a good looking pond back in the trees on public land. Looked like it had good depth and had some nice laydowns and over hanging trees. Probably have to go back out there during the spring. Quote
Chris S Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 My neighbor told me there was a pond back in the woods down past the bridge in that last cove. He use to land his boat and walk back in and fish it years ago. Quote

It looks like a really good sized pond but I highly doubt you could get a boat back to it as low as the lake is but it looks like there is a place to park maybe a few hundred yards away. The pond I walked yesterday was not real big but it looked good from what I could see about it. Quote
nokturnal_one Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Any body going to the Bassmaster Classic down in Tulsa? My wife and I are moving back to Utah the beginning of March and for our one last mid-west adventure my parents are flying in and we are going to enjoy the launches, competition, and the expo. Plus my birthday is on Feb 20th so its going to be the ultimate birthday present.Tomorrow, the wife and I are going to explore the edges on nearby lakes and see what kind of lures we can find. Last year I was able to find about 10 crankbaits, hopefully I can make up for all those I lost last year. 1 Quote

Going to the Expo and weigh in the first day, be on the water day 2, and back for the expo and final weigh in day 3. There's a thread in the General Forum, trying to get some kind of BR meet and greet going for guys that are going to be there. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 28, 2013 Global Moderator Posted January 28, 2013 Went and walked the dam at Gardner with the dog looking for baits and making a few casts. Found 6 crankbaits and managed to catch one dink on a jerkbait. He may have gone 8" but my first fish of the year not from Coffey of La Cygne! Quote

Other then tjat any advice for the lakes here in manhattan would be appreciated. I was born in Manhattan and grew up near there (St.George). Spent a lot of time fishing Pott. 2, Tuttle Creek, Milford, Alma, Rocky Ford, River Pond, and the ponds in the area. Milford is by far my favorite for the variety and quality of the fish available there. I get back there a couple times a year normally, usually to fish Milford. I'll have an empty back of the boat about every other week this year and fish some lakes that are about half way between here and Manhattan if you're interested in meeting halfway. You can PM me for more info about the lakes in your area. Quote

I have used US Boatworks in Kansas City, Ks down on Nineth and Osage. They did a coumplete rebuuild for me a couple years ago on a Johnson,  quikck service and runs great still today.  They work on all brands and they do boat engine work and not boat stuff.  Reasonable prices as well.   http://www.usboatworks.com/ Quote
