pbrussell Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 That one on the far right is a good looking fish, probably 16.5-17 inches I'd guess. Yeah, it was the longest fish of the day I think, but the fish on the far left had a much better frame and was probably just as heavy if not heavier. Quote
pbrussell Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Nice fish.... im planning on going tomorrow, what kind of presentations were working? The ned rig. However, if you get some clouds dont hesitate to throw a spinnerbait. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Lucky for me, I scrounged all over Wichita and found the components I needed for the Ned. Gander Mt don't sell Zinkerz, but they did have some 1/16oz jigheads, as well as some 3/32 Mushroom looking ones by VMC, but the hooks are a bit big IMO, so I will try and see, if not, I have some 3/32 Sickles that a friend poured for me, Then Zeiners had NADA, then finally, Cabelas has the ZMans. So we will see. Might even try a Tiny Torpedo early morning to see of a topwater bite is going. Anyone tried Dropshotting a 2.5" Zinkers on a #1 hook? Might have to try that to see how it fairs. Did not have any luck with a drop shot last time I tried. I didn't try a zinker but they didn't want a Zoom Meathead or finesse worm. Like PB said if you get some clouds don't shy away from a spinnerbait even if it's cold out. A small hook seems to be kind of key for the Ned Rig to be effective, I think bigger hooks must keep the bait too rigid to do whatever the ned rig does that makes it so irresistable. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 15 fish for the day. Mixed bag. Smallies, few Whites, couple Drum, and a Channel. Picked a couple on Dropshot Zinkerz. Need more work on "The Ned" though. Quote
kanasbassfisher08 Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 well me and triton went to fortscott today instead of melvern for a differnt view. we didnt do good on the dam only 3 i think and we fish all down the east side picking up a couple dinks along the way until they started to eat a jig pretty well. did decent for a little bit. we fished til 2pm and decided to go to little p or pleasanton west and to our luck it was in turn over lol. maybe 2 inchs of clearity and we worked real hard and triton finally got a nice one about 3lbs and faught like a 5lber and we worked some more but no luck i think i had 2 bites and no fish and he had like 3 bits and only the one. not to fun when u fight those conditions but we got out and got to fish so thats all that counts! joefish Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Did not get on the water this weekend, Grandkids games to watch on Saturday then trip to Wichita Sunday to visit family. Hope to install Troll-Eze recessed trolling motor control tray tomorrow. Then Get out for a couple days this week. Quote
Doc-Drew Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 My fiancée and I made it out to melvern today. Action wasn't fast but we caught some nice ones. I will post some pictures later but Elizabeth definitely had the better day. She had two that measured 17 3/4" and one that measured 17 1/4". All the fish we caught were on the Ned rig except for one 15" white that nailed a small squarebill. 1 Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Drew, where were y'all? I was going up the dam from S to N. I saw a boat over by the Cour d'Alene campground where you caught that big one. Quote

I know I had one every bit of that size on but it straightened out my hook on my ned rig. Which now leads me to my next question. What jigheads are you guys using and where are you getting them? I know the ned rig isn't necessarily the most ideal rig for bigger fish, but when that's all they bite you might have a chance of getting into a big one. I don't really want to straighten out my hook again on a bigger fish Quote

I know the ned rig isn't necessarily the most ideal rig for bigger fish, but when that's all they bite you might have a chance of getting into a big one. I don't really want to straighten out my hook again on a bigger fish I use the 1/16oz Bass Pro Shops brand ballheads. I've used them to catch smallies over 3, largemouth over 6, drum and catfish over 10lbs, and I have yet to straighten a hook. What rod and line are you using and how tight are you setting your drag? I fish mine on a 6' 10" ML/F rod with 8lb Nanofil and a short 10lb fluoro leader. It doesn't take much of a hookset either, just reeling and a quick jerk does fine. If you set the hook like you do with a shakyhead it starts to bend the hook just fron the hookset. I set my drag so it slips a little just from the hookset and then gives line pretty easily if a fish tries to run. It's a small hook so you have to kind of set stuff up to baby big fish in. Quote
Doc-Drew Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Drew, where were y'all? I was going up the dam from S to N. I saw a boat over by the Cour d'Alene campground where you caught that big one. We started out by the dam and then moved west after that. Chances are that we never crossed paths because I don't remember seeing a kayak when we were near the dam. And Blake, I had the same problem yesterday. One of our larger fish we had made a run and my drag went peeling off and then the hook just came out. Just like you said, the hook was straightened. I am going to try to get a custom jig mold to make mushroom jigs like the gopher jigs. Quote

Perhaps that was part of my problem. I was using a heavier rod (my brother was using the lighter rod at the time) and didn't have my drag set to where it would slip. I don't think the hook straightened on the hookset but did on the fishes first run. Didn't have any problem on my spinning setup. Quote
Doc-Drew Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Here are some pictures of the 3 biggest we caught. The first she caught was a FAT 17 1/4" The next was a 17 3/4" Followed by another 17 3/4" Unfortunately, my largest was 16" and deemed "not big enough for a picture" 1 Quote
kylek Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Looks like a good day Drew!! Congrats to your wife for kicking your butt!!!! Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Everywhere Ive looked, I cant seem to find 1/16th "Worm Nose Hooks" (Same as Gopher) with Quality Hooks. Only 1/16 Ive seen is Ebay. And I think they had big hooks. I believe 3/32 is the smallest mold though. I could be mistaken. Maybe a custom mold. I put a order in with TW for some Outkast Money Jigs. 1/16 with Gammy hooks. Nice fish Drew, ahem I mean Elizabeth. ROFL I love getting outfished by my wife. Quote

I was lucky enough to fish with one of his friends that helped him refine the technique and come up with the whole Midwest Finesse tactics way of fishing. Plus there's only 1/32oz difference between 3/32oz and 1/16 and I doubt that is enough to make much difference. Quote

Mr_Scrogg Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I'll give these Outkast Jigs a toss, let ya'll know what I think. Wonder if the KDWPT would listen to an angler about putting a new species in a couple lakes that it should thrive in? Hmmmmmm Polk Daniel, and Cowley County has some nice rock and fairly clean/clear water, Smallmouth's should thrive in it. (Clarity is like Pot #2 if not better) Plus they are within a hr drive for me!!!!! Quote

(Clarity is like Pot #2 if not better) Plus they are within a hr drive for me!!!!! Not a chance. If it isn't a popular fish to eat KDWP won't stock it. I'm shocked they've made the attempt to stock smallmouth in a couple new lakes like Perry and Clinton but I highly doubt they'd do it in a smaller body of water. It would be nice if they'd listen to anglers more but if they did they wouldn't have the silly new bait laws and laws about transporting a live fish (makes it almost impossible to keep a record fish alive to be released since you can't keep it in your livewell since you have to pull all your plugs). Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 4 record fish I think you would have to call them and let them know that you have 1 and then they might let you keep water in your livewell Quote
Doc-Drew Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Hey guys Elizabeth and I are planning to camp at Milford this weekend. I have never fished there and don't know where to start. Since smallmouth will be the primary target, I plan to fish it similarly to Melvern unless someone knows otherwise. I have never fished for wiper but would LOVE to catch some of those. If you guys have any suggestions on where to fish please let me know. It is too big of a lake to just guess where to fish. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted October 30, 2012 Super User Posted October 30, 2012 I haven't posted on this thread this year because, frankly my fishing year hasn't been much to brag about. Excuse my ignorance, but I've got to know, what's a "Ned rig"? Quote
