AllDay Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Squarebill cranks pretty much anywhere except the dam are what I used to catch most of my fish on out there. You may have to mess with colors a bit, they seem to be kind of picky sometimes. Fishing them over the tops of the grass out in the middle of the backs of the two arms should be getting pretty good by now. Very good thank you! squarebill cranks are what I'm all about. Busy Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 I live about 5 minutes from there. We fish the second cove in the NW arm by where the feeder is. I would agree with cranks, although its not my strong area AT ALL. Have mainly caught a bunch of dinks in that lake with shallow running cranks (2-5'). Be careful going east from the feeder, there is a tree just under water ~30-40' from shore that you could hit the limbs on (wouldn't be an issue if the lake wasn't so slow) and the water is muddy. Most of the good fish I catch from there come from spot fishing deeper water in either of the arms (10-15') with jigs or senkos. Chartreuse senkos or dirty craw jigs are my personal choice. In the NE arm, on the North end of it there are some brush piles that can be productive. All the brush they put down this year I think is still above the water! Quote

We started on the main lake point and decided to tackle the NE arm b/c we arrived at 6:30PM and had about an hour until nightfall. They were biting off of my white w/ sky blue backbone crank bait and my friend Walt threw a 5" green pumpkin Gulp worm and he had many bites. We landed 15 bass between 8"-12" but Walt boated a nice 3.5 lbs'er near the main point as we headed in to the NE cove: When nightfall arrived I'll have to say I've never seen so many cruising bass. In fact over 5 times the bass slammed into the boat as they chased shad. We switched over to shad colored shallow diving cranks and tossed them into areas where the bass were circling the wagons slamming the shad. We boated 6 more until we packed it up and left for the night. Very nice first outing for me at Leavenworth!!! Quote

Your trailer tires will probably not be on the ramp but it should be ok on the ramp that is open. The open ramp goes from concrete to rocks but the "drop-off" should be further out. Just go slowly and be sure to double-check! I have seen a few glass boats with big motors wreck props leaving the ramp this year, but haven't seent people with aluminum boats that require less water have trouble. I did hit a rock myself but it didn't damage anything. Forgot to go straight back! There isn't room to maneuver there that's for sure. Quote

My dad and I had no problems getting our boats on the water out there but the north ramp has a huge drop off, I'll probably never use that side of the ramp again after seeing how far it drops off. I caught 17 but only 2 over 15". I also had a 17" saugeye on a DT10 that I turned loose before I found out the length limit was 15" It's 18 everywhere else I fish so I just figured it was the same out there. Oh well, Live and learn.. That cold front made it pretty miserable to be on the water but aside from that the lake is a gem. It's an easy drive, a well maintained lake, and big bass are in there. 57 degree water temps main lake up there! 1 Quote

Oh well, Live and learn.. That cold front made it pretty miserable to be on the water but aside from that the lake is a gem. It's an easy drive, a well maintained lake, and big bass are in there. 57 degree water temps main lake up there! I fished that lake once and did so poorly I swore I'd never go back. The fact I had to change a flat truck tire in a downpour with no raingear probably heavily affected that decision but now I've seen 2 good reports from that lake that have me rethinking that decision. That fish looks extremely tall for some reason, almost rectangle shaped. I think we had our best luck towards the north end of the lake, where did you get your 2 bites? Quote

Both were on the west side, main channel, north of the last cove on small rocky points. Thing i liked about it most is the water level wasn't as horribly low as some I've been to. There was a pretty consistent 5ft depth all the way around the lake from which to work. Of course all the good cover is above water, but at least you're not running the trolling motor into the ground all day. Quote
retro basser Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Had a real nice day out at Lonestar on Thursday morning. There was a big low pressure system coming in and the winds were from the SW and they were finally hitting a moving bait. Cranks early in the morning and when a cloud would go overhead a white spinnerbait was killin the big ones, especially on the fall. What I really like about that lake is that it has more variety of structure to fish than almost any lake i've been to. Dam, Dock, Points, Submerged timber, there's even a good amount of grass still alive. You can throw alot of techniques at the lake and fish the whole thing nearly in a day. I caught three 15in keepers with the biggest approaching 3 pounds so you got a chance of getting into one. The big one just absolutely destroyed a spinner on a fall next to some deeper timber and tried to run to mexico. There was no way to mess up that hookset. It was great. Check em out: 1 Quote

I went to try out the new trolling motor so it's good to go on Saturday, and that's what I ended up doing all day, just riding around. Had one bite the whole day, and broke off on the set. When I pulled up bassresource tonight, the video "Secrets to bass fishing success", came up. I guess I should of watched that before I left today. I have never had a day that bad, it was really frustrating. There was one other boat on Miami, and I didn't see them get anything either, it was like the twilight zone. Quote
