Wachati Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Fished pleasanton east yesterday evening for about an hour and a half. Caught that one on a square bill, it was right around 5. Caught a nice keeper walleye as well. This was my first time fishing there and have to say I liked it a lot. Quote
joefish Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Just a question for those of you who have fished the Pleasanton and Mound City lakes, Are the roads to the lakes paved or are they gravel? I don't like taking my bass boat down dusty gravel roads, but I would like to fish these lakes. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 26, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 26, 2012 Just a question for those of you who have fished the Pleasanton and Mound City lakes, Are the roads to the lakes paved or are they gravel? I don't like taking my bass boat down dusty gravel roads, but I would like to fish these lakes. Pleasanton East and Mound City are both gravel roads, West lake has a short piece of gravel road, maybe 100 yards. Pleasanton East lake doesn't have bad gravel road and it's only about a mile but the ramps are just barely a step above a gravel ramp. Mound City is miles of rutted, pothole filled dirt road to the lake. Met Peter at Pleasanton East after I got off work. Fished it from about 9-2. It was a little slow, seemed like we got them in little flurries. Nothing real big, my biggest was 3.24lbs and tried to swallow my homemade chatterbait. After making a lap around the lake we decided to head over to Mound City and see if they were biting as good as everyone said they were over there. Started catching them right away and didn't even make it out of the ramp cove before I caught my biggest of the day. It was pretty skinny, probably 20-20.5 inches but only 3.99lbs on a Pit Boss. Wish we would have had more time to fish Mound, we were flirting with catching a big fish from the timber at the south end but had a couple missed opportunities and just ran out of time. Quote
AllDay Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Pleasanton Lake East rocks. Pleasanton West is good for "playing". I'll be back to Mound City again Fished pleasanton east yesterday evening for about an hour and a half. Caught that one on a square bill, it was right around 5. Caught a nice keeper walleye as well. This was my first time fishing there and have to say I liked it a lot. You're drinking the Pleasanton Kool-Aid, nice. Quote
AllDay Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 I think Pleasanton East is a hidden gem with not much pressure. Pleasanton West is a "playground" for chits & giggles. Mound City is on my long term hit list. Glad to see others having success at Pleasanton East Quote

Glad to see others having success at Pleasanton East Pleasanton West actually has bigger fish I think, I've caught them up to 23" out of that little puddle. East has been one of my favorite little lakes for a few years now. It fishes shallow and there's some nice fish so it's right up my ally. I fished Wabunsee today with Sam (Flash). It was kind of a strange day, we started catching them like they'd never seen a bait, then it slowed down, then it stopped, then we caught them like they'd never seen a bait before again. We both lost a couple good fish, didn't see most of them. Both of us got busted off by a big catfish, about a minute apart. I got the overachiever of the day on a 1/2oz jig, maybe 6". We caught several smallies, Sam and I both had one around this size. I got my buzzbait hung on a limb behind one of the docks and when I went to get it I noticed a good fish sitting right on the bank looking towards the bank. I knew it was waiting for something to hop in the water so I tossed a Senko on the bank and plopped it in the water right in front of her and she was all over it. Pretty skinny and looked like she was blind in both eyes but she was the biggest of the day at 4.16. Quote

I'll take your word on Pleasanton West having the bigger fish. This Saturday I'm taking an out of town buddy to East and West and this time I'll boat it in the West instead of taking it on foot. Last time on foot I did lose a couple of big ones on the NE end and it was due to my treble hooks on my crank bait being bent outward. I upgraded the hooks so that doesn't happen again. Pleasanton West, however, has been nothing but a delight for me: first outing - 5.2 lbs; second outing 5.1 lbs and 4.9 lbs and I lost a 6+ lbs as she fought harder and heavier than the 5.1/4.9. btw, that was a championship sized crappie you had on your 1/2oz jig B-) ...If elephants can eat peanuts then ants can eat apples. Almost on par with my caboose perch I boated at Wyandotte this summer: Quote

Yep, same lake, and there is some pretty good fishing for channel but especially flatheads, pretty big ones too I've heard . I've also heard they really like bass jigs along with the usual live baits. Quote
Wachati Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Oh uh you let the secret out by posting your mix match color trailer on your jigs. Also a little word of advice to AllDay that I'm sure you already know. I wouldn't bother with the west side of west Pleasanton, it was super shallow when I fished it before the drought and I caught 3 people's lines and gave up over there. So many kids and people fish those piers and areas to the west, I don't think it's worth it, unless there is a lucky craft at the end of one of those lines. Quote

I haven't tried it very many places but it seems to be very key to catching fish at Wabunsee for some reason. I catch more and bigger fish out of there with mismatched trailers, usually a craw colored jig and black and blue trailer. Quote
retro basser Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Weather patterns have been so wierd this week and the bite was so bad at DGCO and Clintion earlier that I almost didnt go out to Perry yesterday afternoon but i'm sure glad I did. FINALLY that lake paid me back with a good day after so many where I usually don't pull out half as many bass as drums.. Got out about 3 and the evening bite was on right away cause it was so overcast. Ironically it slowed down alot before sunset as the sky cleared, so i just left before dusk. I got more quality bites from keeper bass in those 3 hours than i usually get in a whole day, lost or missed several good fish, but sure did learn alot in the process. Of course i stuck my share too... This one was the biggest at 21'' even. Threw away my scale because weighing a 5# sack of flour it said 1 pound... I know it was bigger than the 4.5# i landed in spring out there... the jaw was just huge. Got her out of the marina that Blue likes, now I see why.. Quote

At 21" she should be 5 pretty easy, maybe even pushing 6 depending on how fat she was. Looks to be pretty thick in the picture. Quote

kylek Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 My father in law and I hit Watkins Mill up on Saturday. Was another bad showing for that lake. We managed to catch 2 keepers and 2 dinks all on a black buzz bait. There is so much grass that rings the whole lake that is it impossible to fish most ways. We tried spinnerbaits, shallow cranks, t-rig baits and even deeper cranks off some deeper humps that normally produce a couple decent sized fish. Really looking forward to the Big Bass Bash next weekend at LOZ. Sure would be nice to come back next week and post a picture of a big bass that won me the 60k first prize Quote

joefish Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Fished some private strip pits Saturday in southern MO. Quantity was AWSOME, Quality could have been better. Tons of 12 to 15 inch bass, did stick one that went 4# and a few 13" crappie that hit bass jigs. Quote

Most of the pits I've ever fished are the same way, lots of fish but the big ones are few and far between. Quote

Looks to be pretty thick in the picture. It was big enough that i thought it might be a 7lber at the time... once i calmed down, i realized it was more like 5-6. I got her along the far back wall of the marina not too far from the last cable block. I stuck another very heavy one that was fighting like a smallie near the other cable on that back wall, the line stopped and then I felt and heard a vibration through the line that sounded like someone using a wood file.. on the fourth creak the bugger busted my line on the cable... like I said, I learned alot that day... LOVE that carpet!!! See! It grows on ya... You should bring up that color combo to your next clients I'm going on a multi-lake bass bender to see if i can blow out the transmission on the truck again now that I finally got it back Bout time I get to try out some of these sweet southern lakes you guys have been talking about. Hopefully i'll have some good reports later this week.. Quote

I agree that the west side is a waste of time. More pressure there and its not deep throughout. The east side is where it's at. Quote

Hopefully i'll have some good reports later this week.. I lost a pig to those cables a few years ago. I would have made a conservative guess of 8lbs but it was probably a pound or two heavier than that. With those cables being suspended in the water off the bank a little ways if a big fish wants to get to them it's pretty hard to stop them and once they get there is all but impossible to get them back out. At least that lake finally rewarded you with the fish it is capable of kicking out. To top it off I've heard nothing but bad reports coming from that lake so you must have really been onto something Quote

retro basser Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Just got back from an overnighter down south to check out Mound City and Pleasanton lakes... Loved the lakes, but man the fishing was SLOW. I didn't see a single cloud in the sky both days..it was as bluebird as it gets. It was nice to have it so calm out when the water level is so insanely low, but damm hard to buy a bite. They wouldnt hit a moving bait anywhere so the best I could figure out was to deadstick plastics on the bottom and just twitch em then and again. It was agonizingly slow... and so hard when your on new water and you want to try the whole lake. I really dug Mound City and the geography around there. A Bald Eagle had taken up residence there and by 'there' I mean he owned the entire friggin lake. If anything with wings came flying in: hawk, heron, you name it, the eagle convinced them quickly that there was a lake somewhere else that they better go find... The fish were still sticking deep, in the mouths of coves and dams in all 3 locations. I bet after this weekend they'll start marching up though.. Most of this vegetation was dying out, but there were some green spots that seemed to be holding fish. Any of you ever pattern vegetation? Quote
AllDay Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 A buddy and I will hit up Leavenworth this evening for a couple hours. If anyone has general areas to share such as fishing the NW or NE arm it's appeciated! It'll be a first time outing for me at this lake. Quote

If anyone has general areas to share such as fishing the NW or NE arm it's appeciated! It'll be a first time outing for me at this lake. Squarebill cranks pretty much anywhere except the dam are what I used to catch most of my fish on out there. You may have to mess with colors a bit, they seem to be kind of picky sometimes. Fishing them over the tops of the grass out in the middle of the backs of the two arms should be getting pretty good by now. Quote
