Jim Fish the Zarks Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Anyone want to fish Wyco for a few hours Tuesday morning? I don't get off work until 8am so it would probably be around 9 when I got out there and I'm only going to fish for a few hours so I can get a little sleep that afternoon. I'm typically free in the mornings....and would really like to learn from a few locals, next time you go out and are looking for a fishing buddy please let me know. Quote

Like Clayton said welcome to the board. I agree 100% we all share our info and will help out when we can. I am also in the OP and always looking for some one to share gas costs with. I fish Lacygne as a few others do during the winter, even if its 25 outside, as long as the winds not blowing 10+ . I also chase Walleye, White Bass and Crappie on Hillsdale. Where are you at in OP? AllDay Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 This might be more appropriate for a private message, but I figured I'd post it here and if I'm off base, just whip me with a wet noodle, and then I'll start to figure out the community etiquiet (sp?) Allday - is that a channel cat in your picture? That looks like a catch of a lifetime channel! Congrats! Hi Jim, It's a bluecat actually, boated from Lake Viking, MO (private lake). I caught him off a square billed white shad crankbait just 2' off a retaining wall near the shore. No sooner than it hit the water did I hear a splash as if I did a belly flop in the pool; saw nothing but a big fin splash the water! Took me 25 minutes to land him b/c I was using a light action rod and 8# line. I released him too - I'll wait for him to gain another 10 lbs and we'll rendevous again 1 Quote
AllDay Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Yes, I work midnight shift from midnight-8am Thursday night at midnight-Tuesday morning at 8am. Makes finding people to go with me difficult but it's so nice at the same time because there's far fewer people on the water during the week. Welcome to the forum! This is a great forum and this particular thread is one of the best area specific threads I've ever read. There's a great group of guys on here that are more than willing to share what we've found to be working and where. I think most of us are just about as excited to see someone else on this thread catch a good fish as we are when we get a good one ourselves. Welcome Jim, yes this thread, to echo Chris' statements, is loaded with with suggestions - when you give advice on your successes, what comes around goes around, and one day you'll need advice too. Since you're in the OP area, you're somewhat close to Miami Lake and I recommend that as both a starter lake (from hiatus) and a return-trip lake. There are good bass there to rekindle the fire. Chris, I fished Lacygne at night in July (launched from the northern-most boat ramp from the creek) and was able to land just a 3# LM bass. I motored south to the main lake and OMG per my Humminbird the water was 100'F !!!!!! I think I'll need some pointers on Lacyne b/c I know it holds big LM bass, I'm just not familiar with that lake and where those lunkers are hanging out at. I believe Lacyne still holds the state record for LM bass if I'm not mistaken. In general, the threads I read about Lacygne paint a love-hate relationship with that lake. At this point I don't even know if the bass are holding in the windy northern creek or are they closer to the main lake or the mouth of the creek. N-S-E-W direction, who knows! Quote

La Cygne is all but impossible at times. I usually stay away from it during the summer because the water gets so hot. It's great to be able to fish soft water during the winter time though. I'm like Chris, as long as it isn't windy and it gets to about the mid 20's I'll be out there chasing them. The current state record is actually from a private strip pit in Scammon but La Cygne does give up a 10 pounder or two almost every year. Quote

Jim Fish the Zarks Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I'm pretty excited about today.... I'm picking up my new toy and am going to give it a sea trial for a few hours. Tracker Targa V18 WT. It's not a Triton, but its a fishing boat! The only issue is I have 1 small tackle box and 1 rod and reel with me....the rest are at the Ozarks. This should be a comedy watching me at the boat ramp...since I have no experience with a trailor. 1 Quote

I was in the same boat (no pun intended) when I picked up my vessel at which time I realized I had to do all the administrative stuff like registering the trailer, boat, and motor before I can use it. Wyco lake requires state registration before you can get another special boat permit from them to boat at Wyco (fyi). Quote

Just dress like your going snow sking and your all good!! Like Clayton said Lacygne in the summer IMO is a waste of time, you can fish it but with the water levels like they are I am not running up the creek, once that main Lake temp drops into the 60's its game on! kylek Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Which heated lake is better to fish.. Coffey County or Lacygne? I have only been to Coffey County a couple of times and never to Lacygne. Quote

So I take it La Cygne "wakes up" with bass biting when the water cools? Hey I'm all for it if that's the case. Mid-20's doesn't bother me; it does if nothing's biting. When that time gets closer, I'm game for La Cygne on Fri night or Sat day/night if anyone wants to go. This Fri and Sat I'm weekend-warrioring by fishing Hazel Creek and credit goes to Blue for his recommendations where to fish - I know they'll yield bass!!! Stay tuned! 1 Quote

Wyco lake requires state registration before you can get another special boat permit from them to boat at Wyco (fyi). I ended up taking the boat to Longview, and the people at the marina went ahead and sold me a pass even without complete registration. They just asked me to come back in and give them all of the info once the boat is registered. They did look at all of the titles and my license to insure I was who I said I was. It was VERY nice of them to let me go ahead and get on the lake. Everything went great.... I was able to get the boat down the ramp in my first shot, despite my very limited trailer experience! I was also able to get the boat retrailored without any issues. The boat ran perfectly. It has the new Merc 150 4 stroke and it is extremely smooth and quiet. I was very impressed. Everything worked as intended. My buddy and I didn't have our fishing gear with us, however we marked HUGE schools of baitfish with what looked like a complete feeding frenzy. There were smaller pods of bait fish surrounding the main school with what looked like bass nailing them from the top and blue cats picking up the injured from the bottom. This was all in front of the dam, at the sides of the main channel with fish from 15-28 feet in 50-60 feet of water. MAN I wish I had my cast net and some gear! Does anyone have experience fishing Longview? Quote

Everything worked as intended. Did you go over the break in period in the owners manual? I have a 2010 LOWE FM165 with a four stroke EFI Merc and I could no take it over 3500 RPMS for the first hour of use and could only go WOT for 60 seconds for an hour after that, you need to make sure you seat the valves/piston rings properly during the break in period. Just an FYI the computer system on the new Mercs was designed by Porsche Glad everything went smooth just wanted to give ya a little heads up on breaking in a new motor!! Quote

If you like crappie coffey has some of the biggest ones you'll see in Kansas. They're strict on limits though, you can have 2 crappie a day and they have to be over 14 inches! I caught 7 keepers out there one day last winter though. Quote

I read over the manual for the Merc 150 4 stroke, and it indicated that for the first 2 hours of use to vary the throttle, and every 10 minutes to push it to full throttle for 1 minute, then another 10 minutes of variable RPMs.... The next 8 hours it says not be at full throttle for more than 5 minutes. 1 Quote
retro basser Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Thank you!!! I am sure I will be planning something soon!!!! Hope I have a good story to post about when we get finished!!!! Can't wait to hear it too... good stuff. I attached the plan of attack tomorrow. I use Google Earth for the image then Snagit grab the image and to create arrows and such. Since this is my first outting at Milford, I figure I've got to start somewhere. I may just fish the first north point as I head out of the marina. I was able to visualize the areas you were describing, thanks! Thanks for the offer for helping on Hazel, I'm certainly going to go there. The layout of Hazel looks like Wyandotte. You definitely describe a lot of your smallie successes from the southern part of the lake. Left for smallies, right for largemouth - got it! That's an ambitious attack plan! Managing time on the water is probably the most important component of fishing though, i'm gonna check out that google mapper in a minute and see if i can use it for a post. I read over the manual for the Merc 150 4 stroke, and it indicated that for the first 2 hours of use to vary the throttle, and every 10 minutes to push it to full throttle for 1 minute, then another 10 minutes of variable RPMs.... If you ever want to head out to perry during a weekday let me know and I could show you a couple spots... Quote
retro basser Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I got one shot to get on the water last week but it was 12-5 basically. Went to Perry couldnt buy a bite in the regular places so I went exploring since the wind was a 5mph nothing... Only got a couple bass couple drums. I did catch a 3lber which made the trip worthwhile but overall it was worse than normal mainly cause that's just a horrible time of day to be out there. At five the action started really picking up but it was just timid bites instead of nothing. The 8in chub largemouth that I caught was as fat as i've ever seen at that age... seriously lucky young fish Anyways, this area seemed to really be holding them, mid summer and all... 1 Quote

joefish Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I've considered hitting up Perry but reports of those infectious zebra mussels are turning me away! Thanks for the diagram though. Zebra mussels really are not a big deal if you just float your boat for a day of fishing. Just be sure to wash it in hot water and put a little bleach in the bilge area. biggest problem is frayed line that breaks easily. You need to use braid or at least abraisant resistant line. They are in several lakes in Kansas and will probably eventually spread to most of them. Milford ( I believe you posted you were herre last week) and Melvern in our area have them as well. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 24, 2012 Global Moderator Posted August 24, 2012 Peter and I got to Belcher Branch around 5am Wednesday to give that lake a try. Nice little lake with lots of weeds and standing timber. It was a little slow until it got light enough to see what we were doing, then we got on them pretty good with a buzzbait and frog. I got a good fish on the buzzbait at 19 inches and 3.34lbs. Caught them pretty good until the sun got up higher, then they shut down almost completely. After catching maybe 5 in 2 hours we tossed the boat back on the trailer and crossed over state lines to try Warnock Lake in Atchison. I hadn't fished it in a few years but it used to have good numbers of solid fish. The bright green water and stink from the local hog farms didn't inspire much confidence but we were quickly catching fish, although they were much smaller than I remembered they were very healthy and scrappy. It's only about 30 acres so it didn't take long to make a lap and we did good enough to go around a second time. I picked up a crankbait for the first time and got smacked while I was pulling through a brushpile on the dam and landed a very fat 18" fish that went 3.9lbs. After getting that one I was inspired to try for a bigger fish so I put a 10" black and blue worm on and started pitching it into the numerous brushpiles. Towards the other end of the lake I stuck a good fish on the worm. Almost 19" long and 3.8lbs. That was it on the bigger fish but I had a fish that felt really solid come off on one of my homemade jigs right before we left. She was big enough to make a big boil on the surface despite being 2 feet down in a brushpile that I couldn't get her out of. It was nice to get more than one good one for the first time in a long while! 1 Quote
