Me and Wachati went to Miami county early Sunday morning until around 10? We caught fish but it was hard to catch more than one in a spot. Some times we wouldn't get any fish off a point at all. The bite may be picking up but it's still barely worth going. :Idontknow:

I meant to go to my little state lake early sunday but got delayed until about 10... everyone I talked to said it was a slow morning but as i got there it really seemed to be picking up. I stayed till about 1 and it was better than i thought for the hot part of the day. Caught most off the bottom with a lightweight jig, 1/4 oz i think.

Once Miami starts going again i really want to get out there...

Fished my private honeyhole this morning from 5:30-10 with a friend from work who joined the site not long ago. It was a little slower than usual but still had no problem catching fish. Most fish were on a pit boss or cavitron. I had one big one boil and suck the buzzbait under but just didn't hook up. Ryan caught a super thick 3.39lb fish that was probably 16 1/2-17 inches on a pit boss and a few yards down the bank I caught one that was 4.10 on the buzzbait that had about a 7 or 8 inch bluegill in it's throat with just the tail sticking out of her throat.

That's the first one over 4 I've caught in over a month. I forgot my camera in the truck so Ryan took a picture with his phone, hopefully I can figure out how to get it on here cause we got one looking down her throat at that big tail sticking out of her throat. Second time around the lake my pitboss got jacked while it was sinking through a brushpile. Turned out to be about a 8lb flathead though.

Well finally got a call on my boat today. My third cylinder coil went bad and needs replaced and they said the spark plugs would need done soon so I had them replace those too. Parts, labor, and tax it's going to be $301.95 so not as bad as I was afraid it might be. On a side note, be careful browsing TW at 3am right after getting a big paycheck, you may find yourself spending over $100 on stuff you don't need :Idontknow:

The wiper are supposed to be going good down there trolling cranks or 4" swimbaits. If you can find it there's a sunken bridge down by the dam where the water goes from about 32-22 feet of water really quickly. Trolling cranks and drifting live shad or jigging bucktails over that is how I've caught some of the biggest wiper I've caught from there. Just a thought in case the bass don't cooperate for you guys.

If you have any interest in catching catfish you should take Jake to one of the Pleasanton City Lakes. You can literally put 50-100 catfish from 1-20 pounds in the boat in a day of fishing if you know what you're doing. Good bass fishing in both and some big wipers and walleyes in the bigger East lake. If I ever had a day off I'd be more than willing to guide you guys down there for a day. I've taken several guys down there with their kids and had a ball each time. Last time I went down there my friends son had 3 catfish over 10lbs with the biggest being 14lbs 11ozs.

Hit my new favorite honey hole this evening. The fishing was great. Everything I caught was over 2 lbs. my two biggest were 4.16 and 5.73. I caught the 4 pounder on a havoc black/blue fluke. The 5.73 I caught on a Havoc 4" pit boss junebug. I don't know if it's the cool temperatures and don't want to get too excited but maybe the bigger fish are starting to bite.

Hit the state lake this AM, and I'm already home. Caught a few dinks off square bills and a few off shakey/worm. Oh and a catfish on a square bill, got excited for a minute. Had one break off, that sums it up. Figured I go home and make some jigs. Probably hit Wyandotte sun evening, and bone creek Monday.

Do you have the Wyco permit for your boat? It's kind of expensive to be buying it this late in the year.

^^^He said he did^^^, Hey Peter if you want I'll tag along Sunday. I had plans with the family Today.

Yeah your buddy that I bought the boat from had the permit on the boat. So I am assuming that the 2012 permit sticker on the boat will be sufficient. If not I will have to buy one because we're coming for the top dog once he returns for Wednesday night tourneys.

They aren't transferrable. If you get checked they'll write you a ticket and you'll have to buy one or leave. I think they're about 50 dollars for a out of county year permit plus another 30 for a out of county year fishing license. As far as I know the top dogs of that tournament fished it all year.

Any advise on fishing the dot?

My best advice is be ready to be confused and disappointed on a weekly basis. Some nights you figure them out and it feels like you could catch them all day long and then they just stop on you for some reason. This time of year most of the fish are caught on shakeyheads, finesse jigs or football jigs, or 10" worms. Normally flipping the water willow along the bank is effective but it's been so dry that most of it is on the bank. Waters really clear and it's pretty deep and almost all rock with a few laydowns that never hold fish for some reason. Pretty good mix of largemouth and smallmouth on most nights but largemouth have to be 15" while smallmouth have to be 18". I've caught 2 keepers out of there, neither during a tournament but they had that 5.62lb smallmouth weighed in this spring that set the new lake record. I haven't fished it much this year so I can't honestly say I know what they're biting now. They're almost always schooling on the surface somewhere and eating super spook Jrs but rarely will you get one over 15 doing that. Shakyhead with a some variation of green pumpkin or watermelon is usually best. I think I have quite a bit of info on the Wyandotte County Lake thread also.

Peter and I hit Bone Creek again today. Same deal as last week, lots of fish but none even very close to the 18" mark. I had 34 by 11am, Peter was probably close to that number too as he went on tear a couple times on some of the isolated tree lines we hit where he caught fish several casts in a row. Decided to make the move to Lake Ft.Scott for a bigger fish. We got bigger fish but not many. One of my first flips I drop one of my jigs into a tree and got smacked after sinking about a foot. Fish was a solid 2.5 or 2 3/4 pounds but that still doesn't explain why my Rage rod broke when I boat flipped it :( Took it back to Cabela's and traded up to a 7' 6" LTB. Few fish on a jig, few on a crank, few on a spinnerbait, few on a shakeyhead but nothing bigger than 3 before we had to pack it in.

Two words....Fall Turnover

But . . . . . . it is only August . . . . . :Idontknow:

we're a long ways off from turnover I believe, I hate turnover anyways. I'm ready for the water to get below 80 degrees though, the fish we were catching this morning felt hot in the cool air and had steam rising off them. On a positive note I'll be picking the Roughneck up from the shop tomorrow, it's been a long 3 weeks :respect-059:

Melvern is the closest place to KC with lots of good smallmouth. Milford, Wilson, and Glen Elder are all good options too if you're willing to drive further. Wyandotte is the only lake that is really close that has smallmouth. All of them have fish over 5lbs too.

Hey Blue, have you ever tried to fish largemouth at Milford and what are your thoughts on largemouth there? I'm hitting up Milford this Friday night (I'm a night guy). I fish Wyandotte often as I live 5 mins from that lake. I normally go for largemouths off the points and enjoy it. I see you enjoy Miami lake, it's a great one and there are largemouth o'plenty there. Never been to Hazel Creek lake but am willing to drive it if you say there's good largemouth there!

I have fished for largemouth at Milford a little bit but never had a lot of success fishing for them. Plus I don't get to fish smallmouth a lot and that is the best smallmouth lake in the state in my opinion. I've mainly fished for them towards the north end in tournaments just because they're heavier than smallmouth. There are some nice largemouth in there but they are much more difficult to locate because of their low numbers. I've had my best luck flipping around timber and the few docks or cranking rock piers or points.

Hazel creek is a great lake and I really wish it was closer, there's some monsters in that lake. I posted on a trip that I took with my friend out there a couple months ago on the central forum. It's worth the drive without a doubt.

Wow this is impressive and you narrated the play-by-play like a champ! When you said there's monsters in there you weren't kidding! I'm definitely going to hit up Hazel Creek and will let you know how that shakes out when I go there. At Wyandotte, I catch smallies along the shallow weedbeds when going for LM. Do you think smallies at Milford will be found in shallow points or do you think they're deeper (8'-10'). I'm going to finesse it with 7"-12" shallow first and then I'll switch to cranks and jigs if it's not working. You mention the north end of Milford which is the shallowest area (deepest area is south end). My entry point will be opposite the thunderbird marina where there's a main lake point. From there I'll journey northbound. Have you fished the middle much (like the main lake point across the marina)?

If you go to Hazel creek send me a PM and I'll tell you what I know and try to help you the best I can.

I catch most of my smallmouth at Wyco on shakyheads or topwater and a bunch on jerkbaits in the spring. There's some really big ones in there, it's just a matter of getting them to bite.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's some good smallmouth up shallow at Milford. I caught a 4 pounder there last year when it was pretty hot out in about 4' of water off the dam. From Thunderbird it's basically a decision of if you want to target smallies or largemouth. Turn right you're after largemouth, left it's smallmouth. I've caught them both all over the lake but that just seems where I catch most of both of them. The point to the north in the cove that the marina is in is usually a good spot for wipers but never done much for smallmouth. I've actually caught some of my best largemouth around the marina and in the scattered brushpiles in the marina cove, at least towards the south end of the lake. The State Park marina cove is usually really good for smallmouths and I've caught some solid keeper largemouth up to 18" out of there also. Seems I catch most of my largemouth on jigs or cranks and most of my smallmouth on shakyheads and soft plastics, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and topwater. If you can get an overcast day out there you can have a blast fishing a spinnerbait or trap.

I've caught 2 5 pound smallmouth and 1 4 pound smallmouth from Milford. 1 5 on a jerkbait off the boatramp in the state park marina cove, 1 5 on a trick worm and shakyhead in the furthest south corner of the dam that you're allowed to take a boat, the 4 was on a 3" Gulp minnow on a 1/8 jighead swimming it in the middle of the dam. This spring I lost a 4-4.5 pound smallmouth off a lone stump on a spinnerbait on a big mud flat on one of the first main lake points on the south side near the dam. If I could figure out how to draw on this google map images I'd mark the places I'm talking about so it wasn't quite so vague.

This was the best I could do with a map. The spots I marked are mostly smallmouth spots but I've also caught largemouth and spots at several of them. I didn't mark the dam, figured it's a pretty obvious spot for smallmouth.
