A couple of my recent fishing trips!

3lb 14oz bass from the pond behind my work on a PINK! X-rap. Had to fish one just to see if I could get a fish to eat it.

kanasbassfisher08 (Chris) and I were on the Kansas River trying for some catfish yesterday. Lots of bites but Chris was the only one to hookup. Turned out to be a really nice channel cat.

A couple days ago a group of guys were on the river that had about a 3lb walleye they had caught. I'd never seen one from the river before but yesterday I caught one in my thrownet too.

Got me thinking I should be tossing some artificials down there too!

Is that last picture a saguer Blue? They look like gar to me. What's the big deal about those anyway? That Perry district biologist was pretty excited that they were making a comeback in the resevoir.

Drove up to Leavenworth today to see it drained and try my luck fishing from shore. No bites but it is pretty neat how much of the lake bottom you can see.

Got a few more real projects to take care of around the house before I break the boat out for the season. Let's be honest, aint nothing getting done but lakin' after then.

I'm thinking it's either a sauger or saugeye because of the dark blotches on it's side. They're a popular with fishermen because they're good to eat and the state uses them a lot to try to control shad and crappie populations. I went back out yesterday and caught 7 more of them, including one that would have been a keeper, probably 15-16 inches long and very fat. I may have stumbled onto something out there.

this link may give you some more info, last year I caught what I thought where Walleye out of Hillsdale but was told that they where in fact Triploid Saugeyes. Either way they where tasty!

1st pic is the Triploid and the 2nd is a Walleye, confusing if you ask me!

In other news, I got from a good source this morning that a new state record rainbow trout was caught from Lake Shawnee in Topeka this morning, supposedly in the 14-15 pound range. Now that is a pig of a trout!

I can't ever tell the difference, but then again I don't catch or fish for them often. Most of the lakes have the same length limits across the board for them to avoid getting anglers who are trying to do right from getting in trouble for taking short fish. Most importantly they all taste good and that's all I really need to know about them when I catch a keeper.

I'm up for it. I like the idea of everyone playing hooky from work one day and doing a day get together at a lake within reasonable driving distance. I don't have much vacation left this year since most of it is already scheduled but I could make a Sunday or if everyone wanted to get a case of jiggingitis and do it on a Monday I could do that too. I still like the sounds of Melvern, probably in late April/early May.

A day trip would be fine with me. I was just thinking of a weekend trip so we could get a chance to hang out after we got off the water.

That's true. We could do a day trip and grill some food afterwards but a weekend would probably be a little less hectic. I already have the last weekend of April off if that would work for anyone else. I just took it off because it's my birthday and was planning on going fishing somewhere but haven't decided where yet.

Alright KC guys I need some help. I used to go to this place called the fishing hole at 95th and Mission. Every year or two I would have the owner go through my reels. Well they went out of business, and I am looking for a place hopefully in JoCo that services reels. Couple shimano's, quantums, and a couple other random baitcasters. Anyone know of a good place? The guy at the fishing hole was great, and he serviced a reel for under $15.

The fishing hole was a good place to take a reel but the owner died a couple years ago, believe that's why they went out of buisness. I don't know of anywhere around here that does it. There is a couple sponsers on here that do a great job and don't charge too much.

Hey folks. I'm new to the forums, and decided to join up mostly because of the central section right here. I'm already a member of some other forums, but I just might stick around to mine for more information. Seems like a nice place. At any rate, I went out to louisburg middle creek yesterday. I couldn't buy a bite. There were guys catching crappie left and right, but no bass to be found.

I fished chunk rock, riprap dam, main lake points with standing timber, submerged roadbed, shallows with timber, shallow water adjacent to deeper water, etc. etc. etc.

Fished football and arkie style jigs, and lipless cranks. I would have thrown a jerkbait around the dam, but it was too windy to hold my boat in position. It was also too windy to make any true finesse fishing possible.

Anyhow, I wasn't the only one with limited success. All the other folks I chatted with that were on the hunt for those little green guys reported no bites for them as well. Perhaps it was the high pressure. Perhaps that lake just sucks. Anyhow, I'm hoping to hit miami county, or la cygne next week. Not going to louisburg middle creek any time soon, that's for sure.

I've fished Middle Creek once with some success. This was last summer, and I found all of my fish either in the coves along the weedlines or on the chunk rock just south of the dam. Caught the ones in the chunk rock off of crankbaits, and the ones in the coves off of flukes and weightless worms. Most everything I caught was non-keeper size, but I haven't had enough experience to make a judgement on the overall quality of the fishery. Did you try any creek channels or other deeper structure or did you beat the shallows?

Depends on what you call shallows. The deepest parts of the lake were really hard to key on because of the wind. I fished anything from 5-20 feet of water. There was a steep drop off which I would assume would be the old creek that would've went under old metcalf that had a lot of fish showing up on my electronics, but I just couldn't keep my boat positioned there because of the wind.

Good thing about a day trip is it would be easy, especially close to KC. Somewhere farther like Melvern I always want to get 2 days in cause the rig is such a gas guzzler. I'd say welcome to the forum, but let's face it welcome to The Thread When the site isn't forcing you to get a new profile or selling your email to spammers, there's a pretty good group of guys keeping tabs on the local waters.

I'm not the most experienced angler around here but it sounds like your strategy was real good and it sounds like you found em bunched up over a heck of a piece of underwater structure. It is early March still. Then again, if this week's weather doesnt make them move i'm going to give up fishing. Do you remember the water temps?

Fished Monday, creature baits along the rock wall on the left past the discharge, they hit them on the fall. Pitch near any type of cover, sticks, rocks etc they are holdinh tight. I fished the discharge for 10 minutes and got fed up with the wind.

Welcome to the forum PB! Middle creek sucks, that's the only way to put it. Even the state guys I've talked to said the same thing. They just can't seem to get much other than crappie and catfish to do any good in that lake. There's much better lakes to fish. Even as hard as La Cygne is most days it's only 10 minutes further for me so I'd much rather drive there and at least I have a shot at a monster out there.

Made it to the State lake Today. The water temp was 64* and the bite is picking up a lot. I was there Monday? and the water temp was only 57 but I caught a few.

I took the Kayak back Today with 2 rods. Each had a 1/2oz Jig/Rage and I beat up on them pretty good. Nothing big all were 2-3 pounds & most were closer to 2 pounds . I know for a short while I was getting bit or catching a fish on almost every cast before they shut off!.
