Heck, catching 16 is fun I don't care where you go, especially in January. My ol lady's dad has been farming his whole life and he thinks it will likely be a cold spring too. I'm guessing that means they'll be really hard to pattern but hopefully the silver lining is that if you figure it out it could be a bonanza, even on the busier lakes. I've been eyeballing Mozingo lake in NW MO on this new software I have. It looks pretty impressive actually. Anyone hear anything about it? Mozingo is a blast to fish most of the time. I usually fish it late spring/early summer and get on a good topwater bite along the edge of the grass in the morning and then flip the trees and grass when it gets hotter out. There is also usually a good deep crankbait bite during the summer if you can find the deep brushpiles. As far as the weather, I'd rather it be a cooler spring without all the rain we had last year. Colder water is a lot easier to catch fish in than high, muddy water imo. Quote

Lots of boats fishing for the little white bass that were everywhere. Nice thing about it was it left that bass pretty much all to us. Jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and shakeyheads were the deal. Fished with Peter (Wachati) and we both caught fish pretty steady all day, just mostly little ones. I'd bet well over half of them wouldn't have bumped 12" if you'd have jumped up and down on them first. They were willing to bite and that was the important thing. I had big fish of the day with a 18.5" fish that when 3 3/4 pounds on a shakeyhead. The rock bank by the river mouth was the only place we could get bit with any regularity. I ended up with 19 and he caught around 15 I think. 2012 bass count-141 Quote

Well even though I learned last season that the KDWP ratings can be *ahem* misleading at best, I still have their rankings from last year saved so i decided to compare them and see which lakes were the 'biggest winners' for black bass going into this season. So, for what it's worth, here's all the lakes who's ratings increased over 5 pts. If nothing else it weeds out some dead water... 2012 KWDP LM Bass Highest Density Change.pdf Quote

retro basser Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 The KS biologists go out and 'sample' these lakes by running a shock boat around and collecting what floats to the top... the biggest fish is the biggest bass (in lbs) that happened to get caught in the current during last years testing. (The 2012 fish forcast is based on testing done througout 2011) I think they mentioned somewhere about switching over to electro boats that will just stun the fish long enough to count them. I know that testing is important in managing the fisheries, but it's always a bummer to see trophy fish go out like that. Quote

It stuns the fish just long enough for them to be netted and put into a collection tank where the revive and are weighed and measured before they release them and it does little or no damage to the fish. I was "lucky" enough to be at 2 lakes the same day they were shocking them last year and watched them collected them and turning them loose after being weighed and measured. If you're ever at a lake when they're doing this I'd suggest just watching them do it, the odds of catching anything will be heavily stacked against you at that point anyways. Quote

I thought i read somewhere that they were trying to transition to the no-kill ones, but heck if they've always been that way all the better... Wife and I fished Table Rock last weekend but no real picture worthy fish except the first meanmouth I've ever caught. You aint throwing that rig in Kansas are you I just saw a pic in this months BASS master mag with a guy with 3 of those tied on for a total 13 swimbaits! Since Kansas wont let you have more than two hooks on any rig I am saving my money! Quote

So you had some luck throwing it I take it? Not really. I caught that meanmouth and had another big fish hooked for a second and that was it. I had lots of follows from small spotted bass. Other than that it gets snagged if it gets close to anything and about every 3rd or 4th cast it gets tangled and won't swim right. Quote
