Super User Catt Posted August 1, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 1, 2010 Ok Housen' & 6-Mile Looking at the Acme Mapper 2.0 on topo mode, find Housen' Bayou where it intersects with the Sabine River; start here and follow the bayou all the way to the west Second look at every place marked "150", it the darker line; the normal lake level is 170 so we subtract 150 which gives us 20'. The lake is approximately 2' low which makes these spots 15' deep and are places I look at with my depth finder. Quote
idrathrbfishn Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Heading to the bend this Friday and Saturday (6th and 7th) to try some of the insight I am trying to learn on this site, have open or willing to be backseat if anyone interested.  Thanks Quote
BulletDon Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I see what you mean. So the key here would be hit those areas that are closest to the creek channel Okay, I have two for you. The first: You have a norther, the first of the season, that the winds are high enough to forbid you from fishing the main lake, which I know you love. You are not going to let the day just go by. Where would you launch and spend your day to where you would be most successful. Either the TX or LA side. Second would be the same scenareio above but with the winds coming from th South. The seasons would play an important role in this so lets say late summer, early fall Sept - Nov. Why would you pick these areas over any other either north or south wind rank them them 1st thru 3 and if their is a tie of the top two, you still have to choose one over the other and what would ultimatley make your decision. Pen is out, plenty of paper ears are perked and I am ready to take notes Thanks, donnie Quote
TBendBassin Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 ill say one thing about housen to also help you figure it out and that word is flats... now you will see a ton of boats on the these flats but start fishing them and pay close attention to your electronics and you will figure out what sets some places on these flats apart from other places. im not saying that the flats are the only place to fish in housen but...  Quote
idrathrbfishn Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Catt where are you getting your 7 1/2 in Gene Larew worms? Quote
BulletDon Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Catt, Housen: Starting at the river and going west, is that all 150, the darker line, even though it is not marked with 150? It is the same shade as the others that are 150. Thanks, Donnie Quote
BulletDon Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Man Catt, you are up early.First I would like to know where those two brushpiles you spoke of in an earlier post that are on or near the pipeline 8-) Dissecting more of Six mile and Housen to start. Thanks ahhh i believe we should leave those two alone they are horrible places to fish Okay let me know what the coordinates are so that I can stay away from them Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 2, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 2, 2010 Ok! Where to start? Yes the contour lines marked "150" is the same even though it not marked, that was easy. Words of Caution!!! During severe weather conditions Toledo Bend Reservoir is no place to play hero! In 38 years on this lake I've seen it eat every brand boat made and turn grown men into whimpering babies. During thunder storms that cropped up to fast to out run I have personally ran my boat up on the bank, got out, and seeked shelter. If I'm not able to get out the main lake due to sustained high winds then I will select on of the larger creek channel coves. Which one really does matter as long as I can safely launch and recover my boat out of the wind. To accomplish this means if the wind is out of the south I will launch on the south side of the creek channel cove or north if the wind is out of the north. Ok now to burst you little bubble! To rank them them 1st thru 3rd would be next to impossible and here's why. If we have north westerly or north easterly winds we may not be able to fish Housen' at all but at under the same winds 6-mile may be totally fish-able. At the same time and under the same winds we maybe able to fish the entire length of the main lake but not the middle of the main lake. It strictly depends one wind direct and the angle each creek channel lays in relationship to north, south, east, and west. Under any adverse conditions it's simply play by ear Quote
BulletDon Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 yep, i hear you about the wind on the big bend. I will be coming with some more questions oh mighty professor. On Acme Mapper, when a line is on either side of the the 150 line, does one know what the next depth level is? I know one is deeper and one is shallower, but it is not always easy to define that. Simple sense says that the line towards the river or creek would be the stair step down and the opposit would be the stairstep up. But what about the depth? Are they 10' increments or something else? I looked at a few other Texas lakes that I fish and they are not as detailed as Todeo. I wonder why? Any thoughts? Thanks, Donnie Quote
BulletDon Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Catt, How wide is the pipeline? Do you know if the pipeline is above or below ground? Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 3, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 3, 2010 Reading & understanding Topo maps can be difficult so I suggest reading the following. http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/booklets/symbols/ Find N 31.27433 W 93.69244 This is the top of a hill if you notice the first dark line that is 200' & the second is 150', so any thing inside the 150' line is shallower and any thing outside the 150' line is deeper. The pipeline is buried under ground, the right away for the pipeline is what you are actually fishing and can actually be seen looking toward the Louisiana side. N 31.41429 W 93.65956 The distance between contour lines on Acme Mapper vary from area to area Quote
BulletDon Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 I dont understand when you mean "right away is actually what you are fishing"? Thanks Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 3, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 3, 2010 Right-of-way is a term referring to the strip of land over and around a pipeline where a pipeline company purchases a portion of the landowner's legal rights to the property. Quote
BulletDon Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Anybody been to the Bend lately. I have not seen any reports? Quote

Super User Catt Posted August 4, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 4, 2010 Here is a stupid question for you who fish nights are you fishing the same areas that you would fish durning the day? :-? That is the #1 most asked question I hear about night fishing and despite what you may have heard bass do not morph into a new creature when the sun sets. I fish the exact same location and with the exact same lures I do during daylight hours. Quote
BulletDon Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Acme Mapper. How accurate is it? Anyone know? Just so long as it is within 50sq yards. I am good with that. Thanks, Donnie Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 5, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 5, 2010 It is fairly accurate as far as contour lines are cocerned; I can't varify GPS coordinates Quote
TBendBassin Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 how about how to properly fish offshore structure, how to find it, what is the best kind, and how to find fish on offshore structure then how to pick it apart piece by piece to get to the hawgs Quote
BulletDon Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 I like it, bring it on want to be able to get to the hawgs. Quote
