Yea we would have been in the top 100, but wouldn't have got a check lol. It's rough out there right now. Last year every school of fish bit, this year your lucky to catch 1 or 2 out of a school.

At least you finding schools lol. I put the boat in the water at crack of dawn Sunday. First stop was a main lake point where i caught 1 fish about 3 pounds on a c-rig in 15' of water. I then proceeded to move around to several spots that have produced for me in the past just graphing. To sum it up I never took another cast after about that first 30 minutes of fishing. I graphed till about 10:00 and never found a school of fish or any bait fish. Graphing was concentrated in 15 - 25' of water mid lake. They must have been either deeper or shallower is all I can say.

Not this weekend but next I'll be making a 3 day trip up to TB.  I'm going to be staying on the San Miguel finger. Looking for any advice and tips on where I should look for fish.  What are the fish up to right now on TB? Deep? Shallow?  Also, if they are deep, any extra advice would be helpful, I fish mostly fresh water marsh in SE LA, I generally do most of my fishing in less than 8 feet of water.  Deep water bass fishing is not something that I'm not familiar with at all.

The fish on San Miguel can be found shallow and deep right now.

Shallow in the morning on top water deep mid day and shallow in

late evening on top water.

I live on San Miguel.

For finding deep water bass I use my hook and line map, two good anchors and a fishfinder and find bass on humps or in creek channels from 15 to 25 feet right now.

Hope this helps sir.

Finally got back. Been over a month in a half. Thank God I got a job in the Pirate's Cove area. Good excuse to fish too ? Will give a report after.

Also, just curious what and where is the pool?  I figure it's below the dam or in the marsh?

With only 3 days to work with I would not recommend trying to learn deep water structure. Fish your strengths, there's plenty opportunities up shallow.

How y'all are?

The "pool" is Lacassine Wildlife Refuge in southwest Louisiana.

Thanks for the info.  I did plan on spending most of my time fishing shallow.  I do enjoy really deep fishing, and would like to at least try it a little bit during Mid-Day.  I've been looking at my navionics maps this week, looking for deep points and humps.  I'm hoping I can pick up a few throwing some deep diving crank baits.  I don't know why I enjoy deep fishing, maybe its because I don't usually get to do it.

Troy I must clarify when I talk deep its usually offshore!

You can simply move away from the bank & try A5BLASTER's suggestions.

I'll try that.  What do you recommend as far as lure types this time for fishing deep water this time of year?  Crank baits? Jigging? Carolina Rigged?

This morning caught 6 bass and a catfish. Only 3 were decent size. Buzzbait, spook, and a crankbait is all I could get a bite on. Depth was from 4 to about 16. All different. Didn't figure out a set depth. Will try somewhere else and deeper this afternoon.

Little fish, good luck with the wind this afternoon.

Thanks. Ya, it was windy. I tend to bring lake advisories lol. Just decided to go back in Sandy. Caught 12 on a spook from 4:30 to 7:30.

Finally quit surveying. Fished this afternoon in Six Mile a lil while. Caught 8. Jerk bait, crank bait, and only one on my spook. Still can't even make em fart on my frog. No size. Headed to Rayburn tomorrow if it's not a monsoon!

Oh this is gonna be fun and tedious. Live a few hours from Toledo Bend (New Braunfels, TX) and plan on going over there in the next year or so. Honestly, not ready as a bass angler (Rainbow Trout fishing my whole life until last 6 months or so since I lived in Cali until September 2015) to go all the way out there for a week long trip when I can work on my knowledge on Canyon Lake. So to get ready and learn as much as I can, my goal is to go through from the beginning of this thread and read all of your posts' Catt. Would you recommend this or is there somewhere else it may be better to start in the the thread?

Thanks for the wealth of information, it is going to be great trying to take it all in.

Catt,

I'm at page 17 (loooooong way to go) but one thing I have noticed a lot so far in the brief reading I have done (I am copy and pasting all of your posts into a word document so I can just focus on reading your content) is you like to fish at a depth of 15' +/- 2'. How would you make this work if fishing in a small arm of a lake which does not go 15' deep? Many parts of Canyon Lake which seem like a good place to fish are much more shallow, so should I avoid such areas? While your content may be based on Toledo, I do recognize that much of this information will apply to bass fishing as a whole.

Appreciate what you are doing

I just finished reading all 253 pages.

It was a great read!!

@Catt, @Bass_Fanatic and many others have done an amazing job keeping up with this.

This thread has opened up the way I break down and fish a body of water, for sure!

@HunterSmith & @Hez

Thread & website is about sharing! ;)

15' +/-3'

Under "normal" conditions this is the depth at which most "grass", Hydrilla, Coontail, Milfoil stops growing.

Keeping your boat at this depth should put you at the outside grassline, you'll have to find it with your lures. This works for shoreline structure or offshore structure.

This is a " starting points", you may have to work shallower or deeper to contact bass.

@Catt

So, what if there is no aquatic vegetation? Canyon Lake does not have aquatic vegetation; the bottom is basically rock. How would you fish this differently? Canyon is a difficult lake for fishing Bass but I am trying to figure it out. I've been fishing closer to shore lines; should I continue this given lack of vegetation or is there still something better/more efficient I can do?

Couple more questions, apologize for the abundance.

You mention main lake bass being more predictable than shore bass, as far as you can imagine, would this be the same on my lake? Depth at deepest is around 165' tho the lake is considerably smaller than Toledo.

When you say you start a creek/river bed and work shallower, what do you mean? Apologize if this seems fairly simple, I may be over thinking what you mean.

When heavy wind (Canyon Lake gets very strong winds quite often), would you recommend moving to a depth of 12 -- 15'?
