capierrottie2 Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Fishing Report, I went to the big pond Sunday from midday and had to leave due to the wind and waves about an hour before daurk. We launched at Kite's landing on the Louisiana Side ( I dont recommend launching there with a North Wind) we launched ok, but by the end of the day there were around 3 foot swells and i like to never got my boat back on the trailer. We headed across to the Indian Mounds to try our luck Carolina Rigging (watermelon candy and watermelon gold flukes) from the mouth of the creeks back into the creek channels . The water was murky and the water temp was around 52 degrees. We had two bites and landed one, just a pickle. Then we headed to Jessie Lowe and the wind was picking up, so we tried to just drift with Carolina Rigs. There was plenty of grass there, but we were drifting too fast to work the baits slow like we would have liked to. We had no bites, but I believe it was due to the boat drifiting to fast and not being able to work our baits slow enough. We decided to go back to the Louisiana side, because the lake was getting rough. We headed into Yockum ( I have never fished that area). The wind was too bad to fish where I wanted to so we head back into the cut to the left to get out of the wind. The grass was pretty thick there and it was too shallow for my liking, so we headed back in to finish the day. I did learn a valuable lesson. That is you better think before you just go launch your boat anywhere. Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 29, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 29, 2009 Check out this link it lists all available launch sites on both side of the lake; I think I know 75% of them. From now until late April I trailer a lot since running the main lake is out of the question in a 16' boat; I've also learned where I can fish in what wind conditions and will trailer to the nearest launch. capierrottie2 anchor Quote

Super User fishfordollars Posted December 29, 2009 Super User Posted December 29, 2009 Fishfordollars, I saw earlier in this thread that you purchased the HD map for toledo. I have been trying to for weeks and when I pull up the buy HD maps page it doesn't list anything for Lousianna and No toledo listed for texas. What am I missing? :-/ I know it is there because it shows the HD version available when I have the maps tab open. I think I have a spare. I am holding one for Catt, but let me see if I can put my hands on another and will let you know. FYI, the reason you can't find them is because they are not available. These are maps I got from a rep that are done by another mapping site. mapcard.com Quote

I wonder if it is going to ba a future release? These HD maps are nice!! there are spots on my home lake that never showed on any of the published lake maps that stick out like a sore thumb an the HD maps. There goes all those hours I spent idling around to find them out the window. : Quote

Super User Catt Posted January 1, 2010 Author Super User Posted January 1, 2010 I don't know why but the south bank of Housen' has sure been on my mind lately Quote
Dalton Tam Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 I'm not exactly sure where at but a good friend of my dad's, Tony Fuqua, told me that him and Larry Peecher (I guess I spelled that right), I'm not sure they were fishing the same place or the same time with one another but one of them was fishing just south of San Miguel somewhere and caught 23 lbs. using a lake fork magic shad rigged with a chatter bait head on it. I know it sounds funny but this guy wouldn't lie to me he's just one of the more sincere guys that you meet. He told me that if he can make it out there the weekend of the tournament, he would show me this location and a few others. I was wondering if maybe you knew about where this location could be since you keep up with all the tournaments won? He said it was only about a 500 yard stretch that they were catching them on. Maybe that will help you out. Quote
bigtimfish Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 launched at six mile yesterday with a buddy, an avid angler on the Basschamps circuit.A little chilly in the morning but warming up to 50 something degs in the afternoon.Sunny and a little windy, not bad though. We started off with deep cranks. I threw a Bandit 700, he tossed a Bomber fat free and a DD22. Nothing. So I started tossing a 12" black BPS worm on a c rig.Again nothing. We move to six mile flats. There is still too much grass. In Jan in 14' of water the grass is still 2' below the surface. We threw xcalibur xr50's,xraps,spinnerbaits,tx rigs and whatever else you could in that spot. And nothing would bite. We tried various other spots and everywhere we went and everyone we taked too, nobody could get bit. It was dissappointing and confusing. On a day that was so beautiful nobody could catch anything? I still had fun though. Quote

Super User fishfordollars Posted January 3, 2010 Super User Posted January 3, 2010 A huge advantage this time of year is the ability to pick and choose your days; Friday was not one to pick Neither will this coming Friday and Saturday. I am supposed to fish(Club Tournament) and the weather for Houston is Snow/rain Thursday/Friday with a low of 24* and a high of 34*. I can promise you I am having second thoughts about it. Houston is always 5* warmer than the lake(Rayburn). Quote

Super User fishfordollars Posted January 4, 2010 Super User Posted January 4, 2010 Well at least it looks like it will be warming up a few degrees for Saturday. LOL Quote
Jon86 Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 What is the water temps for Toledo right now? The water temps will dictate how warm it will be while on the water. Have you ever noticed in the early spring when water temps are lower than the air temp that you are cold when on the water, but warm when you get back to the ramp. We have that problem here in Iowa shortly after Ice out. You will see the air temp at 70 and the water temps are still in the 40s and you will freeze you butt off when out on the water. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted January 4, 2010 Super User Posted January 4, 2010 Have no idea what the water temps will be. I am bailing from the tournament even if they don't cancel it. Low Saturday for the Lufkin area just west of the lake is now set for 13*. Heck, it's now set for 18*-19* for a low in the Houston area Saturday. If any of you are going, just enjoy the heck out of it. Quote
Jon86 Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I don't blame you FFD, I wouldn't fish either. I fished a BFL a few years back down at Lake of the Ozarks and it was 22 degrees at launch. The Marina was iced up when we got back for weigh-in. Our low here tonight in Iowa is -14! It will be 3 months before we are fishing again up here. Â Â I do want to thank Catt and FFD for all their information about Toledo Bend. I lived down in Lake Charles, LA for 4 years and fished Big Sam and TB alot. Although I have been in Iowa for 3 years now, I still find it interesting to read about those two places and what the fishing is like down there. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted January 4, 2010 Super User Posted January 4, 2010 When I lived in Alabama, I fished a tournament on Lake Logan Martin. Everything iced over and the marina had to use tractors to run down the ramp with each trailer. It started out at 17*(Sleet/Snow mid day) and warmed to a balmy 26* for a high that day.It was a mess. Winner had one fish that weighed a little over two pounds. Sixty one boats, three fish caught. Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 5, 2010 Author Super User Posted January 5, 2010 After this week y'all can expect the water temps to drop 10 degrees out on the main lake because of air temps combined with wind chill. Back when I was younger & dumber I would say yea lets go but as the pain of old age sets in I tend to pick and choose my battles. Quote
