Skeeter922 Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 So unfortunately I couldn't even communicate with anyone this past weekend, as my Verizon phone had no service 95% of the time.  Friday and Saturday we tried fishing shallow in Housen and Six Mile around grass and buck brush.  I caught a few nice keeper sized fish on Ol Monster worms and TR baby brush hogs.  Bite was extremely slow for us though.  Got my brother on several smaller sized fish swimming a Rage Tail Cuttr worm.  Starting Sunday we didn't have a bite until noon time, and I could tell my brother was getting discouraged.  We moved out to main lake points in 20 feet of water and wore the Kentucky's and small largemouth out on Carolina rigs and shakey heads.  Had to really stay glued to my electronics, it was an all or nothing kinda deal.  Sunday through Tuesday we averaged somewhere between 30-45 bass a day.  I believe Monday morning was the only day where the wind was a real issue.  The rest of the time was was smooth sailing on main lake. 2 Quote

I hear you on that jcdogfish. I look at the forecast to put a game plan together before I get there and usually it changes too. lol Quote

This past weekend I was spankin'em Friday and Saturday, show up next morning ready to fill the live well, and NOTHING (happened at two different locations, in TX and LA). When pulling off the point, I noticed fish in 20-25 fow, not sure what species. Do you guys think the fish backed that far off in a night (200yds)? Didn't try'em, just proceeded to next spot, since you guys have said post-spawn-ers are difficult to catch. I was fishing point 2-8 fow with flooded trees and began to notice bait spraying top of water with fish destroy-n-em, it was obviously not bass. Crappie? I don't know. Do you guys believe this was fry or threadfin they were eating, or something I don't know about? I don't recollect ever having the discussion of the bass' primary forage for a specific time of the year except fall. I am interested in learning more about their primary bait sources once they back off, Late Spring and Summer. I'm trying to stay ahead of the game. Any discussions/literature on the baitfish sources of TB to learn from would be appreciated. Oh, by the way, I haven't got that look from Pops in a while I caught some white bass that were on the baitfish like white on rice.  But every other species was mixed in as well.  I literally caught largemouth, spotted, white, catfish, and barfish in the same spot.  Like a buffet table. 1 Quote
Skeeterzx20 Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Only been tbend twice. Going in few weeks. Any suggestions where I should put in. And fish midlake area. Is there any grass midlake to flip. Thanks 1 Quote
jwclteer Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 First of all, what is haygrass? We got down to the bend finally late this morning and launched at Joes 944, caught one and missed one! May have done better had we had a better knowledge of where to run and where not to run. This place is hugely intimidating! This "bayou" or whatever we were in is bigger than some of our lakes in North Louisiana. I think tomorrow we plan to check out Indian Creek, Buck Creek and maybe Sandy Creek. 1 Quote

bayouXpress Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 our annual trip is coming up. So far as I can see the first couple days weather wise looks promising.  Lake at full pool which i've fish before.  We are going to run our normal spots, but i have a few general questions.  Whats the water visibility in paulo? This is where we stay and always put in at least once back there.  Been lots of attention to the hay grass this year with the water level, have not heard much about the buck brush though.  Its it still a factor?  I would expect there still to be some  spawners south by the dam, anyone still running across bedding fish?  Water is so stained where I  fish in my home waters just seeing beds in toledo is pretty amazing to me.  Only really had one trip where we stumbled across a small cove with beds everywhere, but i think we were a little late cause only a small portion had fish and were all small males.  I finally got a bigger boat this year so even though fish are still spawning I hope to find some action offshore.   Quote

Bryanhester Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 I've caught fish south and north the past few days !! Caught a bunch of good fish and also caught a lot of keeper fish that I kept to clean for a fish fry.. Cleaned 20 yesterday and all but two had eggs. There are a lot of fish that haven't spawned yet. All of the bigger fish were prespawn also. Next couple of weeks should have a lot of fish spawning !! ?? 1 Quote

jcdogfish Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Well, this spring has been nothing short of a disaster for me. After several trips up to windy, cold front Bend I may have to skip a weekend, Caught 7 fish Saturday, packed up the truck and came home. I just can't seem to get on anything this year. Looking forward to May-June and hopefully better times. 1 Quote
RCCA Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 They were tough for me this weekend too. Caught 12 Saturday and 5 today. Maybe next weekend we won't have a cold front on Thursday or Friday for the third or fourth weekend in a row! Â 1 Quote
mguidroz Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 I fished Housen Friday April 1st from 1-6pm. Only 7 caught with a couple of 3lbers being the biggest. I fished 6-10 fow with a 1/4oz TR 7" junebug thrumper worm and creature baits. Three of the seven had eggs. Water temp was 65-68 degrees and fairly clear. All fish caught were released. 2 Quote
jwclteer Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Ya'll keep saying it was tough but seems like you did decent for the conditions! We fished Mill Creek both Saturday and half day Sunday. Had trouble with the wind Saturday so had to duck up into the small pockets. Caught 4 with two being small dinks, the other 2 larger dinks at maybe a pound. Had two different people tell us they wore them out on the haygrass with flukes and by punching. We don't have punching rigs so Sunday we fished the mats with flukes and swimbaits and caught 4 10 inch fish. Between the weather conditions and not knowing the lake, we had a tough time! 1 Quote
ToledoMard928 Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Fished from Mill to Housen yesterday swinging for the fences. Flipped hay grass and buck brush until I could not flip anymore. Had 5 with the biggest being 3 pounds. Saw two on beds, one in Housen and one in Buck creek, neither would pay our baits any attention (water still stained). We did see a several balls of fry in Housen with bucks on guard! I did not venture deep this trip, I was trying to get my son on some bed fish before his time is taken up with baseball. Beautiful day on the water even if the fishing was a bit tough! 2 Quote
RCCA Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Anybody know if there is a landing I can use closer to Mcgee's Flats than Six Mile or Paradise Point in Mill Creek? Â Quote

june-bug Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 Awesome day BF! Were they post spawn? Why you breaking off so much brother? Ive broke off more this year than ever before myself but I've also used fluorocarbon alot more for the first time. Pay really close attention to my knots and moistening them and all that stuff but man I've lost some confidence in the stuff. Never broke off so much on big game or braid just saying. 1 Quote
