kking Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Just back from fishing the bass cat owners tournament. Weather change definitely affected the bite. Guys that were catching a lot of fish deep Thursday and Friday struggled. Most of the fish caught was shallow. One guy said he caught his in about six inches of water, she weighed 8 pounds even. We ended up mid lake catching fish in about a foot of water. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Yep, I stayed with Keith this weekend and what he said is right on the dot. Thursday and Friday I had 20lbs or so and 15lbs and the guy I was with missed a STUD! Then Saturday all our deep fish left. We struggled to get a little less than 12lbs. Had one good fish come off that would have bumped us to 14lbs or so and get a check, but that's fishing. Had a blast this weekend, but was disappointed Saturday. Guess I won't be going back to Mountain Home, AR this year Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 12, 2015 Author Super User Posted October 12, 2015 This lake can change so fast! Tuesday we have 4 from 8° clock to noon then the wind switched to the south & we caught 26 by 3:30! But that's why I love the Bend, it keeps you on your toes! Quote
BassinHog Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Catt  Did you do anything different when the wind changed, change location, presentation? Just wondering, wind (as long as you can stay in the boat) seems to really get them going at times. Quote
Oneshot Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Need advice.....coming down to Toledo Bend last weekend in October for a one time fishing trip......fishing in a kayak tournament. Can anyone recommend a couple of creeks to try at that time of year that would be sheltered enough for kayaking? Info on put in spot, place to stay etc would also be appreciated! Thanks! I will be pre-fishing for a couple of days so hopefully I can figure out a pattern that works......not expecting to win tournament, I just don't want to get skunked!!!!! Quote

We were drifting the east bank of Hurricane when I saw shad busting the surface, tied to a stump & caught 11 right there without moving. What was I throwing? Texas Rig, 3/16 oz weight, 3/0 straight shank hook, & a black/blue tail worm that I aint telling y'all the brand! Quote

Jack's 944 Marina at the end of hwy 944, 6-Mile boat launch at the hwy 87 bridge, White Oak Park Hwy 3382, Paradise Point Marina & Cypress Creek Marina both on hwy 3315. All on the Texas side, if you want to fish the Louisiana side just ask! Quote
Oneshot Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Thanks! I was leaning toward the south texas side anyway.......looks like there are several creeks there I can try.... Quote
june-bug Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Struggled this weekend but I did manage to catch a new personal best agaiin with a 8.33 that I caught Saturday afternoon. Hard to believe I catch my personal best two weekends in a row in the month of October. Caught this one on a chatterbait on a 5' flat that dropped off quick to deep water. No grass in the area just wood and baitfish. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 13, 2015 Author Super User Posted October 13, 2015 Great job june-bug! The greatest thing about T-bend is a PB can be on the next cast! Quote
RCCA Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Congrats June-Bug! Hope we each catch a 10 this weekend Quote
BassinHog Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Catt  You think it was the wind that blew the shad up in Hurricane, or just got them active. I have been on similar fish at local lakes the last couple of weeks. Wind helped. Just not getting many big bites out of the groups. Were you catching bigger fish when it turned on or just numbers? The wind was already blowing just from a northerly direction & I was seeing shad every where both visually & on my graph. Before the wind shift we caught 4 bass in 4 hours 2 were keeper; after the wind shift we caught 26 bass in 3 1/2 hours 15 were keepers. Quote
kking Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Great catch June-bug. At the rate your going you will have a DD by December. Catt, wanting to make sure I understand about your post in hurricane creek. The wind had been blowing from the north and bites were slow, but when it started blowing out of the south is when the bite picked up? Just curious because I went up hurricane Friday and didn't have any bites. Fished about the first third of it on the east bank Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 14, 2015 Author Super User Posted October 14, 2015 That is correct! We started in the mouth of Hurricane west side (1 keeper), the Bull Creek ( 1 short & 1 keeper), & then the south bank of Housen across from Bull (1 short). Then we went back to Hurricane on the east side but in the back 1/3. I seldom if ever fish the front 1/2 of Hurricane on east side execpt for the point. The west front 1/2 is hands down more productive then the east front. The only reason we fished Hurricane is because it's my sons favorite! Quote
kking Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Thanks Catt. Good information. I have never fished the West side before. Quote

Maybe I'll just skip the 9 pounder and jump staright to 10 lol. Seriously though it is crazy how i caught those two fish. I cast between the same two stumps for both of them 6 days apart. Maybe a bigger one will be thier next time lol. I'll be deer hunting for the next few weeks now but will be back out there as soon as I can thats for sure. Quote
BassinHog Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Catt  Thanks, by reading into your comments I and I am sure most can tell that you're letting us know that we can apply that same tactic to many of the similar coves  (not just Hurricane, as it appears may not necessarily be your favorite) and get similar results. This is why I am on here often, not to go get one of your spots to fish, but rather to learn and apply your tactics to the Bend if possible, but more often to similar lakes I fish near home (although much smaller) and see how well I can do.  Do you feel the wind change was the major factor in triggering the fish to feed? Was it the mixing of the water that made more forage available for the bait fish to feed on? These are thoughts that pop into my head first. The fish had to be there, you probably fished around them all morning without triggering many of them to react. I will often check the major feeding periods, if we are talking about Tues Oct. 6th, according to my chart you really only touched the beginning of a minor feeding period. So, hard to say that was what was going on. Almost has to be the change in wind direction. Why?  I hope to get up to the Bend and or Rayburn soon. Have spent the past couple of years taking my son and his fishing partners fishing in HS tournaments. He is now in College (fishing) and I am having withdrawals. The past 2 years we have traveled across several southern states competing and having a blast. I would say to anyone on here, if you have an opportunity to take a High School Fishing team out, please do so, you will truly be blessed, and it doesn't have to be family. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 16, 2015 Author Super User Posted October 16, 2015 BassinHog, Yes the day in question is Tuesday Oct 6th In my personal opinion the wind shift was a factor in turning the fish on; I've also experiened a wind shift shut them off. I know the bass were there as were the shad because I could see both on my electronics. Was is the only factor? Probably not! Would they have turned on in Bull, Ashmore, or the south bank of Housen'? Probably It is my understand that bass actively feed at least once during a 24 hr period, when & for how long is unknown. Luckily for us not every bass is feeding at the same time! Teaching others to bass fish is what I love; right now my 8 yr old grandson Aiden is in his second year & has boated over 450 with a PB of 6 1/2 lbs. Quote
RCCA Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 Nice job with Aiden. Lucky young man! I'm kinda crazy but I'm up for adoption 1 Quote
