Super User Catt Posted March 30, 2014 Author Super User Posted March 30, 2014 Buck Brush & Watermelon Neon Lizard Quote
ToledoMard928 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Fished Housen Wednesday. Did well on wacky worms and senkos in 4 to 6 ft. of water. Put 25 fish in boat over the course of the day. Saw a few beds with males on them but not the number I expected. Most of the fish we caught were males. We did see a few nice fish cruising but could not get them to bite. A couple of buddies fishing the same day had a little better luck with size..numbers were about the same. Many Boy Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Any other reports from the weekend? Sorry to say but I've been on honey do's all weekend and haven't had a chance to go. Planning on hittin them tomorrow and Tuesday though! Looks like the rain's gonna come in for the rest of the week. I'll post a report after Tuesday. Planning on starting at Community hole and working my way south. For sure gonna take Catts advice and hit the buck brush at 944. Couldn't find any Rage lizard in watermelon neon but got some Gene Larews in that color. If anybody has time to go this week, I'd be more than happy to have ya, just PM me! Quote
RonnieF Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Had a blast at the mouth of San Miguel. So shallow I'd have to lift my trolling motor to reposition. Caught around 30 with 11 keepers. Flukes worked quickly. Biggest was maybe 3.5. Quote
Bearonthewater Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Quick report from last few days: Lots of fish being caught in flats and coves off of Carrice. Also good numbers and sizes found in the back of Hines Creek off Palo Gaucho. Fish the grass in 6-8 ft of water. Wind blown points producing well too. Water temps ranging from 59 - 66 while averaging mostly around 61. Rogues, pointers, swim jigs, and wacky worms producing well. Good confirmation on reports from Corsey creek area too as Catt posted earlier. Quote
Super User Catt Posted March 31, 2014 Author Super User Posted March 31, 2014 Do not forget there is water south of Housen' Quote
bobfrogg Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Leaving Wednesday for the Bend going to cabin at San Miguel park  hope the fish are still biting when i get there. Quote
FreshorSalt Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Was hoping to have a good report from this weekends trip but unfortunately Fridays weather left the camp I was staying in with no electricity for the entire weekend and my boat lifted in the air stuck in the stall. Did fish Friday afternoon for about 2-3 hours with only 3 small dinks being caught. So my fishing trip turned into a camping drinking trip. Good think about it camp owners comp. our weekend so now I get to plan another trip. Hopefully next trip is better. Quote
RonnieF Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Another fun fluke afternoon. Biggest 4.5 but lost one bigger than that one. Quote
Many Boy Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I fished Housen at the pipeline and 944 yesterday. Nothing. Wind was blowing right down Housen all the way to the back. One thing stupid that I did and ain't never going to do again was to cross over from Toro and back in a 20 mph wind!! My Triton had to earn her money yesterday! Today was better. Went to San Miguel late this evening and fished the North bank for a few hours. Caught 7 with a 6 lb and 3 1/2 lb being the biggest. Caught them all on a black/blue Rage Lobster on a shakey head. Some on the bank and some not but all shallow. Most of them males on beds. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 2, 2014 Author Super User Posted April 2, 2014 Sitting @ Jack's 944 Marina waiting on daylight! Fished buck brush yesterday, boated 17, all keepers, culled to 23.81# Aint saying nothing else! Quote
Many Boy Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Catt, that's awesome! That's a nice stringer of fish any day! I know it's been a subject on this forum before, what do those fish on beds do right after a front? The wind was so bad Monday that it was hard for me to stay out of the brush and stay in one spot but I didn't get bit on anything, craw worm, lizard or jig! Do you think those fish moved, got lockjaw, I didn't throw what they were looking for or just didn't fish it slow enough? Looking forward to your report today. Quote
Bloodandguts Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Catt...you are da man!  17 keepers. Awesome.   Didn't know your vessel drafted less than 8 feet. LOL.  What exactly are y'all calling buck brush? Is it those little squatty bushy shrubs?  BnG Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 3, 2014 Author Super User Posted April 3, 2014 Boated 12 all keepers with a 9.5! Had 1 wrap me up in the brush so bad I had to cut the braid, I set hook and she set hook back. T-rigged Rage Tail Lizard watermelon neon I don't what the real name is but all I've ever heard it called is buck brush. It can be 5-6' tall and is very hard to break. Many Boy, when I say I'm fishing buck brush I'm actually all the way in the brush. We are in a 15' x 42" bottom Xpress and Pat & I stand on the front deck pulling the boat into the brush. We then drop the bait into every opening. Extreme Full Contact Fishing 1 Quote
Many Boy Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I hear ya Catt! Them big girls are definitely deep in the brush and I'm definitely gonna have to go do some logging! That 9.5 lbr is enough to make anyone get some scratches on the boat! That explains why I didn't get bit, I was fishing the edges and any hole I could reach from the edge. My thinking was that there wouldn't be a bass, especially a good one, within a mile of that place if you were crashing brush to get to em. I'm learning.....I'm learning!! Thanks as always for sharing the insight! I was hoping I could get out there today to see how you were doing it but had other appointments that got in the way. Hopefully I can get there tomorrow before the storm hits. Quote
Bloodandguts Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Thanks for all info. Gonna try to make it Friday n Sat. I had a turkey hunt lined up, but too much action at the bend to pass up. I never would have thought of nosing into that brush, but will definitely will try it. How deep is it in that brush, a foot or so? Thanks again, master. Grasshopper Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 3, 2014 Author Super User Posted April 3, 2014 I learned that trick about 15 yrs ago in Hurricane when I could hear them but couldn't see em. I noticed an small opening just wide enough to fit an aluminum boat. When back 3 days later in the Xpress & caught 20-25 a day for 4 days. 2001 B.A.S.S. Top 150 I fished with Stan Gerzsenyi in the back of Martinez Bayou. He would power through the buck brush with the trolling motor. Surprisingly it didn't scare the fish! Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 3, 2014 Author Super User Posted April 3, 2014 BnG, about a foot or two I don't know how well y'all know 944 but we were all the way in the back on the west side. The creek zigzags like crazy which is why we opted for the Xpress, don't have to stay in the creek. When we did it in Hurricane we actually got out of the boat on the bank & was flipping back in the brush. It was crazy, we were laughing & talking cause 3 bigger boats could hear us but couldnt see us. Quote
back water Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Not 100% sure but I think it is called a button bush - sure is tough stuff!!! Keep a tight line Quote
RonnieF Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 A brown/gold/orange rogue worked for a while today for me. 5.5 lb'er was the best. Later they ate an Arkansas shiner fluke. Quote
RonnieF Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Way to go Catt. Sounds like a fun time. I know what you mean by full contact sport. I have the bruises to prove it!! Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 4, 2014 Author Super User Posted April 4, 2014 A brown/gold/orange rogue worked for a while today for me. 5.5 lb'er was the best. Later they ate an Arkansas shiner fluke. I don't know way but a gold rogue has always worked! I throw gold, black back, orange belly & that gold works on a trap as well! Quote
