Bass_Fanatic Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Got a question for you gentlemen on deep water jigging... what seems to be the better way to present your jig? Do you hop it or drag it along the bottom? Do the seasons affect this method and/or type of structure you're fishing? I'll play. Â Like Catt already said, you have to figure out what they want each particular day, BUT, I always start with a drag. Â I like to drag my jig until I feel it make contact with cover then pop it off the cover. Â Most of my strikes happen either when my jig first hits the cover or when I pop it off. Â Sometimes they like it when I "stroke" the jig! Â Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 9, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 9, 2013 Bass_Fanatic! Don't be stroking no jig on the Bend Anybody throwing a Trap? Quote

Bass_Fanatic Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Why not you drag or swim only? Im thinking he was being a little sarcastic...its a GREAT way to catch some bigguns. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 10, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 10, 2013 Cause stroking jigs may get your arm broke Quote
six-mile C-Rig Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 just a small report from Wednesday. This recent cold front definitely turned the fish on.  I fished from 2-7pm, caught about 20-25 fish.  About a 50/50 mix of LM and spots, nothing bigger than 4lbs. Fish were biting anything that resembled a shad, and at all depths..I caught fish from 5-25 feet. Caught them on various crankbaits, spoon, and a spook.  Lake is just beginning to start to turn over in isolated areas.  Fished mid-lake Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 11, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 11, 2013 Cool dude where ya been Quote

shaneus Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I sold my boat new one comes thursday, I would throw a frog somewhere, don't know where yet lol Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Havent been in a month, so I cant say for sure, but I would start on grass flats close to creek channels with a trap, spinnerbait, weightless plastics. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 16, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 16, 2013 Lake conditions are excellant, 167.5 level, temps 76-79, mostly clear north, clear mid-lake, very clear south. Grass & creeks/major ditches are key patterns From daylight - 9 am schools should be active in the back half of major creeks/ditches. Fluke/Senko weightless on or near the surface, spinner baits just over the grass or a medium crank. 9 am on, Texas rigs, jigs, or drop shot, outer edge, 12-22'. Deep cranks & late October! Quote
bcody Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 It's been 3 years since I've found this thread. It's been an incredible piece of information, and I'm thankful for all of you.  With that said, I'm heading up there and will fish Fri-Sun. We'll be staying at Alpine Marina and "plan" to fish Palo Gaucho & Housen, but we'll see how that goes. I'll check back in when we return and let you know how we do. Quote
rickk Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 New to site and relatively new to bass fishing. Â From South LA. Â Lucky to have a family member with a new place up there that has offered me its use. Â Have been trying to read through everything here and learn a few things. Â Looking forward to fishing up there and learning something new. Â If you see someone kayak fishing who looks lost, that will most likely be me! Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 17, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 17, 2013 Welcome aboard rickk Take your time & learn an area at a time Where's camp? We'll gladly help Quote

SquiggyFreud Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Hi All, First time poster, I have been reading this thread for a couple of weeks. Superb info!! My wife and I will be camping at S Toledo Bend state park week of the 3rd of November. I hope to hit the water once or twice, although we will also be there for birding, hiking, etc.  I havent spent much time on/around  the lake since the 80's, I had a buddy whose grandfather had a house just across the cove from Red's Point. I have my hook n line map, looks like there are a few good spots near the park that may hold a few fish  Looking forward to being there soon!! Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 18, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 18, 2013 Welcome SquiggyFreud If you have any questions free to ask someone will have an answer. 1 Quote
rickk Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Catt -Â Â The camp is south of the bridge on LA side. Â I'm from Lafayette and fish Big Lake, Cypremort Point, and Grand Isle, mainly from a kayak, which I love. Â With a kayak I really have to focus and learn one area at a time. Â I've found that I've become a better fisherman through kayak fishing by having to really focus and plan before getting out on the water. You can't change areas that easily! Â Â Â Â The most accessible place from the camp would be slaughter creek, which is an area I want to learn. On the other hand, I may want to have one or two other spots and can drive to if conditions don't favor this area. Â Â I have kids that are too young to fish right now, but when they're older, I'll have to break down and get a boat! Â If have any money left at that point! Â Thanks and any advice is appreciated. oldgolf4 Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 May be a little too elementary, but how about explaining how you "stroke" a jig. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 18, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 18, 2013 rickk, Slaughter is an excellent place to learn, won a few tournaments fishing there. There 2 main points where creeks "Y" on both sides. oldgolf4, stroking a jig basically is casting it out & hopping it high of the botton. Quote
shaneus Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Stroking is kind of like a mild hookset, getting the jig 4-5 feet off the bottom and letting it fall......Was on the lake today man was it rough but the new BassCat is awesome! Didn't catch any, but I went out mostly playing with the boat.........everyone I talked to at the ramp had a hard time today.....anyone have better luck? I did get a few bites on a red bug trick worm fishing it real slow Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 I caught 14 today, 2 over 3lbs. It was brutal for me. I fished 11 hard hours for 14 small fish. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 And man there were some bass cats on the lake today! Getting ready for the GAF tomorrow I guess. I couldn't make it tomorrow, but good luck to those fishing. Quote
shaneus Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Yeah they have a little owners tourney tomorrow Quote
