Fished Friday and for a few hours Saturday. Caught about 25 Friday, biggest going close to 7lbs.  Jigs and Alabama rigs on channel swings got the most bites, but we did catch a few in grass. Saturday I found a new swing with some fish, but they wouldn’t bite right. Missed a lot, caught 6. Dropped one good one about 5lbs on a Crig.

Here is Amateur Hour's dumb question of the day.  Channel swings?  Are we talking about bends in the channels or where the channel/creek swings close to the bank or point?

A or B?

That would be bends in the channel - period. Whether it’s located near a point or land mass is, for your specific question, irrelevant.

@Amateur Hour ya know how many creek swings are in this lake?

Pre-spawn has everyone looking at the bank not realizing pre-spawn take place in waves.

You’ll find me in Caney at least one day this week. There are simply countless ditches/drains in the main body of Caney that it boggles the mind. Many leading to spawning flats and some cutting through those same flats. The fish may not be spawning or even in pre-spawn but they ought to be locateable(is that really a word?).

I gots me a love/hate relationship with Caney Creek. There is no doubt in my mind that is one of best creeks on Toledo relative to the amount of available structure. The fish are there - I see’em... I jest can’t catch’em.

Water temp was at the mouth of the cove.

Every bass was a legal keeper and all but 1 was so swollen with eggs that looked like they could burst.

2 foot or less of water. Watermelon red kvd perfect plastic swimbait 1/4 once flashy swimmer hook.

16 more I didn't even take pics of.

Every one of the bass I caught were in the last 1/3 of the cove. Grass and or buck brush.

Who says bass don't bed up right now?

Not sure I am following this comment.

There are hundreds of creek/river channel swings in Toledo Bend ?

I would say thousands.  I was just trying to get clarification on everyone’s definition of a swing vs. a bend.

To clarify... A channel swing would simply be a less pronounced channel bend. Still irrespective to land mass or point.

To me where it says 18,28,30,15,21,23 that is what I would call a river swing.

Where it says 24,21 and 32,25 that is what I would call a river bend.

That's how my mind would classify them.

During prespawn and spawn if I could find a swing or bend that came too with in 100 yards of a main lake point with a good creek feed cove with one or more secondary points with the cove filled with buck brush or grass of some type.

I would be in HAWG heaven for sure.

That was my original thought as well.  That is why I was asking.

Y'all better hit the water before I catch them all.

Same bait and pattern as yesterday. Broke off on 4 fish, missed more hooksets then I care to say.

Got down to only one swimbait hook leavt, so I shut it down with 27 bass landed six of those took a ride back too the house to be fried up.

Every bass landed today was slap full of eggs.

I wear size 13 boots just for size reference.

Temp was over the creek channel at the mouth of the cove. Found some 60 and 61 degree water at the back of the cove.

Not sure if it was real accurate on the temp but hoping it was.

Welp.... we’re gonna be facing dropping water levels(maybe) and a pretty nasty cold front coming. Any guesses on what all’a that is going to do to the bite between now and Sunday?

The cold will probably kill the bite.

Dropping water levels? Why would the water level be dropped?

Ya gotta keep in mind it's only February ?

It depends on the severity of the front.

The lake is dropping from all the rain but should stabilize around 170-171.?

SRA has been pulling water since... forever. They’re just now starting to make visible progress - Lake has dropped +/- one foot in the last week, and is still dropping. Rain is coming with the front - but how much... who knows. If history is any indicator the lake won’t stop dropping until one of two things happen. 1.) Lake level hits 168 -OR- 2.) Sufficient rainfall prevents #1 from happening. But... eventually the lake will hit 168.

Yes, it’s Feb. but some are, obviously, starting to move up. I suspect the front will put  a temporary halt to that but hopefully they’ll just move out a bit but still be eating in prep for the spawn.

Time is the teller of all and so too with this!

Good question amateur hour and I won’t debate the terms used. Rather I will say what I like in looking at the two pictures is where the channel swings near the point where it reads 20’ in the top picture. That seems to be what Buck Perry would describe as a contact point from deep to shallow water. In the second one I like where the channel swings near the 15’ flat. The channel has a much steeper grade on that side than the one on the right which is far more gradual. I also like where the channel doubles back on itself to form an underwater point where it reads 32 on top and 25 below. That’s what I look for on maps when I believe they are deep in winter or summer. That’s just my opinion and some more experienced angler may have a different view.
