Amateur Hour Posted October 15, 2018 Posted October 15, 2018 I was mid lake as well. Never went shallower than 15 ft. I caught 12 but only about 5-6 were keepers. It was still fun with my dad. 1 Quote

We had a good time Friday, even though the wind never let up on us.  We got on a school on a roadbed and caught plenty, but like Amateur Hour said, no size to them.  Left them biting to go find something bigger, but all the fish that were in brushpiles last week decided to leave.  2 Quote
PlanoSooner Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 Shad spawn. Multiple reports of 20+ fish caught in the back of secondary creeks. Good luck. . As for me..... Thanks to everyone for the content here. I learned a LOT!!! Just my luck. I pick out several offshore holes to fish and then a couple of days before the tournament I find that a white spinner bait in the shallows will do it. . Still plan to use what I have learned here to go find a big bite if we are happy with our five fish limits this weekend. I will report back   1 Quote

While sitting on my porch drinking coffee. 2 Quote

PlanoSooner Posted October 20, 2018 Posted October 20, 2018 Thank God for spotted bass..... Otherwise we wouldn't have weighed much. I couldn't find those shad in the backs of creeks. Kind of barren back there. And wasted too much time. Found some scattered fish on secondary points. New game plan for tomorrow. Offshore is out for us tomorrow. Kids don't want to fight the wind. . Edited to add: Cranks in white and shad patterns. Shaky head with a shad colored stick worm. White/chart spinners did most of the damage today. After looking at the map, only the secondary points with the best break lines produced. One fish coughed up part of a crawfish. Hmmm.... I think I can do that. LOL  2 Quote
jcdogfish Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 I saw tons of shad in the back of a creek from the highway yesterday? 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 21, 2018 Author Super User Posted October 21, 2018 @PlanoSooner I might be in creeks but wouldn't be in the back just yet! Quote
Troy85 Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Just got back yesterday evening. Shad were starting to move into the creeks from what I saw. For the past few weeks I've been trying to decide if i wanted to try and learn to fish deeper structure when i went up there, or stick to my strengths, which is more shallow water fishing(less than 10ft). The 2 cold fronts that came thru only about 2 days apart, made it pretty breezy most of the time and made it an easy decision. Fished Pirates cove most of the time, from the main points to the backs of creeks.  Wednesday: N wind about 15-20, and misty. Could only get fish to bite a TX rig. Thursday morning: Cloudy in the morning and breezy. Fish were biting crank baits. Caught them at the mouths and mid of several small coves. Thursday evening: Mostly clear and dead calm. Top water bite turned on, chug bug was the bait of choice. Most fish caught in a deep main lake pocket. Fish we caught were in 4-6ft. Friday morning: Partly Cloudy and calm. Friday morning was pretty slow. Caught a couple on top water, and 1 on a C-Rig. Friday Evening: Spent most of the evening on the phone dealing with a work emergency. Got for fish for like an hour. Me and my brother each caught 1 on a chug bug. Saturday morning: Light rain. Frogs over pepper grass caught a few. Most were caught fishing grass edges with a senko with a spinner blade. Saturday Evening:  Front began to push thru, Wind switched to the N at about 15. Fish turned off, was able to pick up a few on a drop shot. 6-8ft in a main lake protected pocket. Sunday morning: NE winds 10-15. Clear skies. Only fished for about 2 hours. Picked up a few fish on a drop shot. Fishing secondary points in coves with a dropshot. 8-10ft.  Had a great time. We caught fish every day, while I wouldn't say the fishing was on fire. We still caught a good number of fish just about every time we went out. The slowest outing was probably Saturday evening. We didn't catch any monsters, most of the fish we caught were between 2-3.5lb. We had a few throwbacks, but more keepers than throwbacks. Biggest fish was 4lb. I did lose what was probably a 5lber, it hit my chug bug. The fish wrapped me around a stump and threw the hook. 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 22, 2018 Author Super User Posted October 22, 2018 @Troy1985s excellent!  Sounds like typical early fall patterns. Quote

You can probably answer this. I saw a lot of boats fishing offshore. I looked on my navionics app and it looked like they were fishing road beds and submerged bridges in 15-20fow. I never got close enough to really tell, but what presentation would you use for that this time of year? Deep cranks and traps, or more like a C-rig or TX rig? 1 Quote
Amateur Hour Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Jig, shaky head, c-rig and drop shot. 1 1 Quote
zleibhart Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Hey y'all, I am going down to Toledo Bend the first week in November for a tournament. I was just curious what parts of the lake I may wanna check out. Also, whether the best chance to catch a big bag would be shallower or offshore this time of year down there? Any help would be really appreciated!! 1 Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 I’m a firm believer that the potential for the biggest bag on the lake is going to be deep 365 days a year.  The problem right now is that the fish are not schooled up and are roaming around chasing bait.  The shallow bite is picking up and 12-15lbs up shallow is very doable.  The top water bite is picking up and the trap bite is just around the corner.  2 Quote
zleibhart Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Very interesting. Are there any specific areas of the lake that you would recommend that produce fish more consistently? 1 Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 The entire lake holds fish, they just relate differently in different areas of the lake.  The easiest fish to pattern coming in with no knowledge would be Lanan and San Miguel.  This time of year docks are pretty consistent and those two areas are full of them.  12-15lbs shouldn’t be too hard to get and you may be able to catch one big one to put you up to 16-20lbs.  1 Quote
zleibhart Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Thank you! What techniques would you recommend for fishing these areas? Â Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Squarebill, chatterbait, jig, and shaky head.  Maybe a whopper plopper or chug bug if you can get them to eat top water. 2 Quote
zleibhart Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 How deep do these fish usually hold off of these docks? 1 Quote

Troy85 Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 @catt. Pirates Cove. I saw several boats fishing the road bed near the islands where Pirates cove meets the main lake. Quote
