Since I don’t plan on fishing the bend for awhile Bc of work. If I where to go next week I’d probably fish the creek channel in hurricane creek and possibly go to the back of it.

Thanks for the heads up. Probably fish Rayburn, mostly, cause it suits my style more but if the weather is too bad to go too far, I'll check it out.

I'm hoping to make it up there in early April.  Will probably be staying at the Army Rec center in the Caney Creek arm.  I've never fished Caney Creek area, any pointers for that area?  Or should I just run to Catts Toledo Bend holy grail(Housen)?

The entire lake may be, but Housen definitely has a special place in your heart.  I see why it produces tho, so many large flats near deeper water.  I was looking at the maps for Caney last night, I don't really see any large spawning flats.  Unless I missed something, I'm still very green when it comes to structure fishing.    I'm going to look more closely tonight.

If there's any place special to me it's Lowe's Creek which is where I started!

 

The humps at Harper's Ridge crossover is where I caught my first limit.

 

Look at the structure around the big island in Caney. Roadbeds, creek channels, underwater points.

Lowe's Creek is horrible!!! Housen is where its at yall stay south and north nothing to see midlake!!! From me anyway lol I can't get off work long enough to fish.

Update from this past weekend. Fished Bass Champs and due to the fog only got about 5 hours on the water to fish. Start out in our first spot in Lowes creek with the boat positioned in about 20 feet of water. Caught a few small keepers on carolina rigs. Not getting quality bites so decide to move to the next spot in the indian mounds. Start off in 20 feet and not getting bit. Decide to move shallow (5-7 ft) and start catching keepers that were just about to bust. Move to the 3rd spot in Housen and go even more shallow (3-5 ft) and again start catching females completely swollen up. Knew it was going to take at least 16 and change to weigh in (we had 15.25 on my scales and notes in the boat) so we released our fish to swim another day instead of weigh them in. Not fishing for points or angler of the year. We fish Bass Champs for money and if we don't have enough, let those fish go and not stress them.

The North end of Toledo is starting to make a comeback. The Blue Lake area is producing both size and numbers lately. Jerkbaits produced results earlier this week in that area. I suspect the rise in water level following the rain we are receiving will push some fish back into the bushes in the coming weeks.

question about the current scenario playing out at the bend.

 

I am sure that a lot of you have some experience with this and i am looking for some theories.  The Bend got a lot of rain and it seems to be coming up pretty quick.  Based on the forecast i have to figure that this will continue for a bit.  What would one expect bass to do when they are in spawn/prespawn when the water level starts to rise?  will fish already building beds stay put?  Putting them a touch deeper?  Will this slow the spawn for others?  speed it up?  Will bass just pulling up to spawn build nests in the newly flooded area or still lean towards the "original" water level?

 

Basically, what do you expect to change when water level is rising during spawn/prespawn periods?  I am just curious as i dont fish many lakes that see this kind of change enough to have a theory.

I've seen all the people on Facebook flipping out over the lake level, couple weeks ago it was because the level was too low & with the scheduled work on the Toro Creek spillway it was doom & gloom. 

 

Now they flipping out because the level is up & it's gonna ruin the spawn!

 

If you look at the lake level historical it's right where it always is for this time of year.

 

Has SRA let it get too low in the past or too high the last couple of years?

 

Absolutely!

 

Currently the Toro Creek spillway is closed & both Sabine River generators are running 24 hrs.

Most people believe 172 is normal lake level, it is not, 172 is full pool meaning that is the maximum level the dam & levees are designed to hold. (There is a cushion of 2' or 174).

 

Historical speaking 169/170 is normal 

 

If the level is maintained at 172 & we get rain like we are now that 2' cushion disappears quickly. 

 

With the lake level at 169/170 now we have 4-5' cushion!

Hey guys, sorry I haven't reported in awhile but I had a trip last week and the past couple days. Last week we fished he south end and had a tough day. I think we boated 7 but had a 5lber and a 4lber. The big ones were caught deep. The 5 came from 34' of water. We graphed a few small schools but they didn't cooperate. 

 

Thursday we fished midlake and found the fish cooperating much better. We boat well over 50 fish with 20+ over 3lbs with the biggest weighing in at 7lbs. Most fish were caught on a Carolina rig, 3/4oz fb jig, and a spoon. 

 

Yesterday we headed back south only to find the deep bite still lacking. Lots of boats and fish up shallow, but we stuck it out deep and boated 8 fish. Our top 5 weighed 13lbs. If I were fishing today, I can promise you I'd be midlake to the north end lol. Those south end fish aren't use to living in muddy water lol.

I haven’t been able to go and probably miss all of March but I heard the chatterbait bite is doing pretty good south. Not many bites but the right type of bites.

Yep. A good friend of mine, Zack Gagnard with Elite Guide Service, had some good ones yesterday with a chatterbait. That's not my style of fishing at all, but they are catching them doing it. We had the bites for over 30lbs Thursday out deep, so there are still enough deep fish, they are just hard rover find right now. Still ended up with over 23lbs top 5.
