jacob2000 Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 So we fished Sunday night and Monday morning after the storms passed over. At first we focused on fishing 12-14 foot of water and only connected with one fish. Monday we woke up early and saw the big storms ahead so we decided to wait it out and go after it's over. We managed to pick up a fish off a point on a rattletrap and after that we decided we should probably really slow down and fish the area but the result ended with no other fish, We decided to try to go and fish the Palo galcho bridge in deeper water, which also sucked. We then headed up the cut and head more to the mouth and decided to give an attempt to flip some grass which also didn't work.  We moved and headed to bank with tons of structure and was 25-30  feet deep. We immediately connected with a fish off a Carolina rig dragging it slow across the bottom with a green pumpkin trick worm with a dipped chartuese tail as our bait. We fished in 30 ft of water casting toward the bank so we probably were catching them around 15-25 feet and ended only catching 2 more.. We can't seem to catch any good quality or quantity fish. We have fish finders etc but when we think we see the fish on the screen or see these good looking drop offs that seem to be holding fish we can never connect with them. I have a tournament January 15 on Rayburn and me and my partner need help on locating fish.  How to fish the area.  What to use when fishing these winter bass 2 Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 There aren't a lot of fish offshore right now due to high water temps. Â You'd be better off fishing shallow grass right now on Rayburn. 3 Quote
OldStratos Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Fished Toledo today from 11 to 5. Caught 5 small fish on a spot remover with watermelon red yum singer in Housen around docks with some rock. Buddy had a rough day but he did catch a 5 pounder last cast in MWR cove. Same bait. We both hadn't been on the lake since July. Was hoping to find some fish for MWR tournament but I need some better electronics. That paper map is getting old lol 1 Quote
OldStratos Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Anyone else on here fish MWR tournament At Army Rec? Quote

mguidroz Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Well I made a quick trip last Friday and fished from 8am to 4pm. I started at the Indian Mounds with little success. Then moved to the mouth of Housen and Hurricane (front 1/3) and picked up a few solid fish. All in all is was nice on the lake. I ended up with 16. The water temperature was 57-59 degrees and fish were caught in 20-25' at the Mounds and 8-12' in Housen. All caught on TR baby brush hog and 7' thumper worm both green pumpkin. It seemed the fish are scattered on the main lake and in Housen wanting to stage. I covered a lot of water to find these. Good luck..... 3 Quote

mguidroz Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 LOL Catt, I haven't been since November but will try to get up there as much as I can before my son starts baseball. I forgot to mention the fish were caught on the edge of flats and point adjacent to creek channel. All fish were released!!!! 2 Quote

jcdogfish Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I don't have enough propane at the camp for a weekend like this. 1 Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 It was cold on the water today! First time I've fished in snow 1 Quote
RCCA Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Me either. Barely have enough pour la maison. Using it all on brewing a gumbo, which it is actually the perfect weekend for and maybe duck hunting. See y'all next weekend though ? Hope you caught and your line guides and worm gear didn't freeze up. If it wasn't duck season I'd have been there too. 1 Quote
RSemmes Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Went to Toledo on the 3rd and 4th without much luck. I checked several ledges and drop offs with no luck. fished long points with steep drops in Indian mounds, I traveled along the contours in most of the area and was unable to locate any fish deep. Tried fishing channel swings as well without any luck. Next we tried a few point and flats with no bites at all. Fished shallow without a bite. When fishing deep I used a Carolina rigged fluke, black and blue jig, tried to throw a 8xd parallel to ledge, and tx rigged senko. I caught 2 fish around 2lbs both on Carolina rigged fluke and my fishing partner dropped a 6+ that spit is chatter bait that he was fishing on bottom. I am just learning to fish deep this last year or two, but getting pretty frustrating not catching. I am spending a lot of time searching before I even fish. I have progressed since I am able to catch a few deep now but this last trip has me frustrated. I just don't know exactly what I am doing wrong. But I'm going to keep working on it and hopefully I can start catching bass consistently. 2 Quote

If your up for it, I have the camp and will pay for the food, fuel, etc. Shoot me a PM and we can try and arrange something. I would really appreciate that opportunity. Quote
kking Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 I would definitely take him up on it. Â He has got the art of finding deep fish down pat. Â 5 Quote

Shallow water fishing is all I have ever fished until recently. This deep water stuff is a new world. Been reading this forum and watching videos on YouTube to learn how it's done. I have said being at the right place at the right time with the right bait is the way to catch fish. Still true. I just have not been at the right place. Seems to me the right place starts with structure followed by breaks, breaklines and cover. Keeping my hook wet in those places should help with keeping my lines tight! The OP of this thread, @Catt, has forever changed the way I will bass fish. Thanks Catt! 2 Quote
