I look at it this way.  For me a lot of the fun is finding the fish.  It is just like a puzzle and its fun and rewarding putting it together.  However if you don't have all the pieces you will never put it together.  This thread provides a lot of the pieces.  I think some folks want a waypoint, lure etc and just point the boat to it and catch fish.  While I'm sure those could be provided they won't help if they are not there or they are set up different for the conditions or just a seasonal change.  I prefer to use the information and bang it out for myself.  If you learn to do it this way you can learn to find fish on your own and create your own waypoints.  I'm doing a lot of idling and fishing for nothing right now, but I did find a few places holding fish and some places that seem like they should.  Maybe those never will but the only way to find out is to fish them.  I made a trip at home yesterday for a few hours and caught as many fish as I have caught at Toledo Bend in 2 months but I've been fishing here for 40 years.  If I make it to 95 I should be able to do the same @ toledo.

That's exactly right!! What fun and satisfaction is it for someone to tell you exactly where to go and do? The way this forum has been presented has helped me understand bass fishing much more than "the whole story"!!!

Just got back from 2 weeks at the bend, I would have posted a report earlier but ATT restricted my service because I used too much data off network with my phone up there. I kind of caught all over San Miguel early and late, I fished top water early and right before dark and did well. Im still learning how to bass fish but I found that if it was windy, a bait that made alot of noise did better but if was calm, I would use a quiet bait that barely made a ripple and it would catch more. I fished the bank and out on underwater points and humps and caught on both. I had trouble catching 2 days in a row in the same spot for some reason and had to move around alot or try different baits. Later in the mornings or earlier in the afternoon I caught some of my bigger bass with a texas rig off of my brush piles in deeper water on drop offs or underwater points close to creeks. There are alot of bass schooling in the coves further back in San Miguel, sometimes there might be multiple schools at the same time but you can see which ones have the larger bass because they cut flips out the water chasing the shad.

Schooling..........I need to get up there

I've been catching a good amount of topwater fish early and late too.

The best top water baits for me seemed to be a rage tail shad if it was windy or a weightless lizard fished like a buzz bait if it was calm. The schooling fish were around deeper grass beds which can be hard to find in San Miguel but they are there, mostly on the north bank.

I've been away from the board a few days and after catching up on all the discussions I feel the need to thank everybody for their unselfishness on the forum. Nobody is obligated to share reports and tips, it's from kindness and a willingness to help the fellow angler improve their skill set. So again, thank you all!

Laroper, thanks for the link. That's pretty cool to compare.

Sacalait, thanks for the report. My camp is on San Miguel. I need to explore the cove more and you've given me something to look for.

I'll be headed up either sunday night or monday thru the following weekend. I'll try to post some reports but cell service is really bad unless i'm on the water. Stop by and say hi if you see a white bass cat with yellow/purple flames on the cowling!

Good luck Ronnie! I hope to be headed up Wednesday.

I should be there Friday. I'll holler at you if I see you. Good luck guys!

Not going to make it this week. Hopefully next Wednesday evening we will head to the lake. At least I'm getting my new electronics installed Monday. Have fun everyone!

New to the forum here.  Appreciate all the info fellas.  I belong to a saltwater forum kinda like this and it isnt even comparable!! Been working Indian mounds and Hausen mostly this summer, but will frequent Pendleton on theTexas side all the way to Six Mile. On the LA side i hang around Tennesse Bay all the way to Pirates Cove. Thankfully i have been doing pretty well on the Big Pond as of the last two weeks... sizing down to smaller baits on C rigs has helped tremendously.  Trying to imitate the smaller shad that schooling bass are feeding on. July 11-12 my buddy I boated a total of 35 keepers.  My biggest 5 on one outing went somewhere around 18lbs.  Best imitation i have found so far is small jiggin spoon, flutter spoons, and a fry on C rig. July 19th-20 we ended up with 43 keepers between 4 of us staying at my camp. Again, sizing down was key.  I tried to throw the book at em just to see if i could catch em on anything else... Nadda.

Best advice i can give for summer fishing is to find coves with creek beds running into them.  Pay close attention to the terrain surrounding you. Keying in on steeeeeep drop offs.  Schoolies have been popping up periodically and somewhere there are a few good ones hanging around. As many have said, i find the grass to be sparse around 20 ft. Somedays i catch em up in the grass and some days i am working the edge all the way out to 38ft. I havent found a deep diving patter yet... mostly bc my spots I hit last year sprouted new grass growth. Gotta love this lake!!!  Learning something new every minute... such serenity.

I went fishing yesterday, caught three little ones, throwing a watermelon red cutter worm with a dipped tail in housen grass flats. Going to try with the wife today a little farther north.....

Shaneus...north of what...the north side of the flat?

What I've heard is structure with grass near to creek/river channels  ;)

I found that the schooling bass were feeding on very small shad also, a Little George worked real good along with small spoons.

I wasnt particularly targeting the schools as they popped up. I just targeted areas where i thought schools would be more prevalent and have access to shad schools.... Deeep water near main lake coves.. with that being said, I consider Hausen and Six Mile to be a lake of their own. So practically any cove in hausen with a creek bed running to the back of it is what i am keyin in on. The areas that produced larger fish only did so on days where schooling fish were more active.. they would only stay up for 5 seconds at a time, but this boosted my confidence in the area and i grinded out the bigger fish much further away from the schooling fish.

The only "schooling" bass i caught were in pirates... the terrain is much different but finding 30-40 ft channels with grass on both sides was key. I would put myself within casting distance of 17 ft grasslines where the schools were and catch a few here and there.  Sometimes my boat would be in 30 ft and sometimes 20.. I could only get the schoolies to hit a two toned watermellon/white senko weightless.  Tons and tons of 12 to 13" fish schooling there.
