I rarely drop an anchor unless it is VERY windy.  I do drop a marker bouy though, normally I like to find the fish, idle over them and drop the bouy on the other side of them then idle back over the fish and cast towards to bouy.  My advice right now would be to hit as many grassy points as you can until you find em.  They are there...I promise

Who is fishing the McDonalds this weekend?  Ill be staying up north in San Patricio, but will be fishing further south.

Ok thanks ***atic and good luck at McDonalds Tourney.

Went to 6 mile for 5 days last week. First time on Toledo bend. Concentrated on grass points with boat in 14 feet of water. No quality fish. Only caught between 2 and 7 fish per day. All int he 4 to 5 foot range. All on Texas rigged worms and brush hogs.

What didn't work.... Early morning top waters with jitterbug and Zara spook. Rattle traps and spinnerbaits where they are just hitting the top of the grass. Senkos on the edges of heavy hydrilla and in the holes back of creeks in 4 to 5 foot of water. For a first timer what did I do wrong

Also how much wind can you handle while fishing Texas or Carolina rig effectively

The wind can get rough, you just have to use a heavier weight on your crig or trig to fish it effectively.  I rarely throw a trig anymore out there, most of the time im throwing a 3/4 oz grass jig if Im slowing down.  This time of year in the clear water of Six Mile and places like it a swimbait seems to be more effective than a spinnerbait for me.  BUT, I think your biggest problem was that your boat was on top of the fish.  If you are casting and reaching the bank, your fishing too close.  Back off, put your boat in 20-25 ft and  cast to 10ft.

ATX keep chunking & reeling ;)

I always anchor on structure & fish it with a Texas Rig & a Jig-N-Craw! May is famous for numbers but not much size so your average is normal.

Right now night time is the right time!

i just bought a place in holiday circle on six mile, im going up this weekend to start fixing things up and will be there often, would like to get together with some of you better fishermen to go out and learn, i am looking forward to fishing six mile and learning it as "its own lake" beings as i have a place here now, everyone says some of the best fishing is right here. after my new house is built i will have a bunk house for rent. im sure we could work out some deep fishing knowledge for staying in the bunkhouse, later on ill rent it out for cash/paypal for ease.....i love fishing, if yall ever want to go out or get together and go pm me for my cell#   :high-five:

Congrats shaneus!  I would love to own a place on the lake, but Im years away from that.  Great idea to learn Six Mile "as its own lake".  That is one of the best places for numbers and big fish on the lake IMO.  Maybe this fall we can have a get together up there.  All BR members who want to come.  Who would be interested in that?

yeah im 27 years old so ill have many years to enjoy it........im in the process of selling the mobil home on it and starting building a house in two weeks........a get together would be good, the more knowledge the better, maybe i could learn something

No, Catt can't get away from work . Have been studying my maps and can't wait to get out there and apply my new found knowledge. Let's keep this thread going, to many have learned  so much valued info. Again , thanks Catt and all contributors.  I have learned more about fishing in three months from this thread than I have in forty years previously.

catt.......i tried this night fishing for the first time, but it was pitch black, i assume i need some moonlight for a night bite?......i fished from 11-3am hooked a monster my first fish and wasnt ready i got a good hookset he came up and jumped and slung my bait the siloette was huge.....i couldnt tell if it was a catfish or a bass but it was big, i caught three other dinks and decided to call it a night.......i was using the same lures i would have used during the day......should i have used a black or what? i was dragging a brush hog with a 1/2 ounce tungsten, fish were roaming on a hump <- that is the only pattern i had with the three fish, fished three different humps in six mile.......any help on this night fishing would be greatly appreciated....things that didnt work......topwater, ole monster worm, spinnerbait, jig n pig

oh and one thing i learned so it wasn't a wasted trip, i use seaguar invisx fluoro. in this case 20 # if you get hung in a tree and troll the other way to let the whole spool out and yank it a few times, its like respooling with new line all the memory is gone and it lays flat again......i know people who respool before every tournament we have because of the fluoro's memory........yall try this and see if it helps......definately a money saver

I hope to get out there in a couple weeks for an evening/night.  Shaneus, keep throwing that Ol Monster worm :wink3:

I fish the same areas with the same lures I do during the day ;)

Having moon light helps but is not necessary, for years I fished the new moon & it helps one learn how to feel a Texas Rig, Jig-N-Craw, or Carolina Rig.

I fished Friday night in Lowes Creek.  Hooked 5 fish, saw one (was probably 9lbs) and the other 4 either broke my 16lb floro or got pinned in the brush piles.  I would be willing to bet that if I would have put all 5 fish in the boat I would have had 35lbs+.  I could feel their heads shaking in the brush piles, but never could work them free!  Frustrating to say the least, but man it was exciting.  I was throwing a 12" Berkley worm, black and blue.

Bass_Fanatic,  thanks for the report, that is awesome.

Hopefully heading back Thursday night!  93% moon visibility and it should be out from dark till past 3 a.m.!!!

i didnt get to fish much this weekend me and the girlfriend went to enjoy the lake.....we did a little night fishing friday night in six mile, caught a few on flukes.....saturday we went out on the boat with the neighboors......sunday we went and fished some spots i had in lowe's creek got a few bites on a fluke and a black/red brush hog. went to fish a main lake hump and fish were everywhere on the humminbird but they didnt want to bite, i think i was a little late though i didnt get to this spot till around 2 pm after church i threw a big spoon and a jig but not a bite, fished for a hour went back into lowes creek and fished the outer grass line.......couple of bites nothing bigger than 12" all weekend.......now that i know there are brush piles ill be side imaging the whole creek to find them, since there are 9 pounders in there   :teeth:

Posted

There are fish bigger than 9lbs in there :wink3: Ive seen them myself.  There are quite a few brushpiles off the points in Lowes, all you gotta do is spend some time to find them.  I never fished shallower than 20ft. Friday night, but I may try shallow Thursday just to see whats up there.

i worked the heck out of the shallows, i have one spot where i have caught 27+ pounds in one hour before, i hammered it pretty good. if the fish are there i work a couple of other spots in lowes i have. only had two bites throwing a fluke over the grass normally i have at least 10 bites in this one area it where i bring beginners to fish so their catching, but the fish werent really there so thats why i moved out alot further and didnt bother hitting the other spots. ill need to spend some time finding these brush piles......everyone keeps saying six mile six mile six mile, i hate that i have a place on six mile and dont think the fishing is that great, ive had lots of luck farther north. im probably missing something simple, but i  have yet to hit the six mile flats where everyone is talking about catching them right now, but there is always 5 boats within 50 yards of each other everytime i try to fish it where i would like to  :gunfight19:

What map are you guys using and where can I buy one? I have read all 152 pages of this post so I am up to speed. I would definitely like to learn more about deep structure fishing. I fish from Pendelton Bridge South to the dam. Any help is appreciated.

re-read the first page or two posts, catt tells us

Thanks shaneus, read right by hook and line, registered fishing. I just ordered one, when I get it, I will go back through all 152 posts.

6-Mile can be a hard nut to crack but the payoff is well worth it but with that said give me Housen’ Bayou ;)
