BassChaser57 Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 I was wondering if anyone was fishing Mexico or the Border waters of Falcon or Amistad? If so can you give us a report? Quote
Kevinator1 Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 Only guys who want to get in the middle of a drug war. I think we need to wipe out about 100 miles of Mexico near the Texas border so that we can fish the lakes without worry. It's getting crazy down there. Time to clean up the mess > Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted December 8, 2010 Super User Posted December 8, 2010 My wife has killed two trips to Falcon for our group. Personally i have no problem fishing down there. Never had any problem, but she has put her foot down for the time being. Probably a wise choice, but i still will figure out a way to make it happen. i think Harralson and a few other guides are still making the trip across, but i'm sure the choices are sliming down. Probably limiting it to sugar lake if any at this time. Quote
Taylor Fishin 4 life Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Yea ill be in the area in about a week at my dads, probably will just hit choke though Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted December 9, 2010 Super User Posted December 9, 2010 Put in at Callihan ramp. Run back to the left and fish the grass lines running down through the tree line. Fish them until you hit the roadbed that runs out through the timber, follow it in until you reach the old fence line. turn to the right and work the grass out through the timber. Hold on. Good luck Quote
Walking School Bus Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Is there any truth to the stories that I hear occasionally about fishing boats being hijacked and owners being left in the water? I am speaking of bass fishing lakes in Mexico. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 12, 2010 Global Moderator Posted December 12, 2010 I've been to Lake Comendero twice. About 20 miles from the lake they stopped and picked up heavily armed police officers that stay with you all week at the lodge and drive around in a boat on the lake to keep an eye out on people. One of the other groups that was down there got stopped at gunpoint and had all the beer and pop raided from their coolers. The same thing happened to me on the second trip. A guy came running down the hill out of the trees with an AK strapped acrossed his chest yelling for "Cervezas!" Neither one of us drank while we were down there on the water so he just took our few pops we had brought to drink with lunch and went back up the hill. It was a pretty crazy experience. Quote
kellisatbdata Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Wow, your story sounds like the hysteria of the US media. I am going to venture out and guess you are a guide at El Salto or elsewhere. We have been fishing Comedero for years and never had our cerveza looted!! There is even a lodge on that lake and they don't seem to have problems. Quote
tbird Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Some local guys around here fish Falcon often ,last few weeks they have really been tearing them up .Last report was from this past weekend ...3 guys... 50+ fish ...big fish was over 9 and had one over 8.Also no pirate sitings, I believe the US Border Patrol has beefed up the area in response to pirate encounters T Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted December 23, 2010 Super User Posted December 23, 2010 I've heard those stories for years. Never met anyone that could comfirm any of them. It's just like anywhere else. you have to be alert and watch yourself reguardless of where you go and what you do. I've spent my share of time down on the border lakes. I'm calling BS on the pirates putting you out of the boat and into the water. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted December 23, 2010 Super User Posted December 23, 2010 Off topic, but how many of you fellas fishing Amistad and Falcon carry firearms for protection? Is it legal to carry guns across lake border on trip? Lastly, what is your firearm of choice? Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted December 29, 2010 Super User Posted December 29, 2010 Absolutely do not carry any guns or ammunition across the border. One bullet is as bad as carrying an AK. Will cost you(Your family) thousands of dollars to get you out and back across to the U.S. side. I have carried on the Texas side, but no way will I if i am going across. Quote
tbird Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Yeah I heard of a hunter that thought he had his max of 4 boxes of shotgun shells and accidently had 1 extra shell rolling around in the bed of his truck ...he got locked up. T Quote
JR Howard Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Ill be on Amistad Sat, Sun, and Mon. Quote
texasbass Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I go to Lake Amistad alot. As long as you have a Mexican Fishing license the Mexican game wardens will leave you alone. But there is so much water that you don't have to fish the Mexican side. Lake Amistad is not like Lake Falcon. We do not have alot of the drug cartels here. There are some but I haven't heard of any. The fishing is excellant top water, deep cranking, soft plastics, caroline rigs, etc. They all work there is grass growing in spotsbut because the lake is only 4 foot low now the water is so clearthat it takes awhile for thegrass to grow. Look for grass in deep water that comes up into shallower water but not real deep or shallow. Morning and late afternoon or evenings are the best. I would not fish any other lake if I didn't have to. Chris S Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Its funny that folks compare these two lake to each other when talking about border issues. When they are 250 miles apart from each other, yes they share the Rio Grande but thats about it. Quote

There is even a lodge on that lake and they don't seem to have problems. Your guess would be very wrong. I was down there because it was my highschool graduation present, my mom even went with me because she wanted to go on vacation and likes taking pictures of scenery and it is a very pretty lake. We were fishing with Ron Speed's Adventures and it was a great trip, but I'm sure the armed guards and lodge being fenced in aren't there for the fun of it. You very well may have never had a problem there but we had a crazy gun carrying guy come running down the hill yelling for beer. The first trip we had no problems at all but imho there are lots of places in the US to catch DD bass so I won't be risking my neck down there. Quote
Charlie Richardson Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 I spent 20+ years dragging a boat all over Mexico. Paid the mordida many times and been scared a time or two. The truth is that it's actually worse in Mexico than the press tells you and I will no longer fish the Mexican lakes, I fish Falcon almost exclusively and have no issue with fishing the Mexican side other than the back of the Salado or around the town of Nuevo Guerrero in the Salinias arm. I hope that someday it will become safe enough to go back to Guerrero and El Salto but for now at least, it's not worth the risk. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted August 19, 2011 Super User Posted August 19, 2011 Regarding Lake Falcon, according to the locals who live there, there is no danger as long as you stay well inside the border. Quote
