Looking for some close spots to fish for some bass or crappie, ponds, sloughs, lakes, rivers. Haven't yet got a boat, so it's pretty much all bank fishing and something easy enough for my daughter to cast and have some fun. One other thing......I've only seen the Catfish Cover on Ft. Fork and I haven't seen anything considered bait fish for bass. So my question is, what is the bait fish around here for bass??

Thank you for any info!!

Lake Vernon is close to you, I have seen folks fishing around the bridge there off of 171. You can also go to Anacoco and turn left ( I forget the name of the road) several miles out of town there is the other end of Lake Vernon. Ive seen folks there as well.  Also Lake Anacoco, but i dont know anything about the fishing there. Last summer Vernon was mostly drained, but ive been hearing that folks are already catching some fish now that its been refilled.

Good Luck

I am stationed at Fort Polk as well... I fish Toledo Bend, but there are places right off post.. Blue Hole and some other recreational ponds pretty close... I would have to get directions for you, i have only been out there once with a buddy.... The MWR here rents bass boats out here for pretty cheap.. I havent rented from there yet, I have been renting from a Marina..

Go to the MWR, it is over by Burger King and talk to them if you are interested in renting a bass boat from them..

Thanks for the info gents!! Alpha, you say you rent boats at the Marina. What do you get with the boat?? I've rented boats before in California lakes and you get a boat and gas motor for like $65/day.

Thanks once again!!

The Marina I rent from is kinda steep, it is 95 for halfday, I fish from around 11:30 to 6:00.. They only have a few boats and one is a bass boat... Idk exactly what boat it is, but its about a 16 footer with a 90horse yamaha on the back... If you pass the Coast Guard boater safety test, it gonna be alittle easier on your pockets and youll get a pretty nice bass boat for a day...

Hey Chris, got an update last night about Vernon lake, dad caught 24 catfish the other evening. Chumming with sour corn and using dough bait. Nothing real bid but eating size at least.
