I'm thinking of taking a little vacation in late May with my boy to do some bass fishing. I'd probably have 6 days including driving time from Colorado Springs.

I was thinking of trying out Lake Fork. I've never been there. And I understand that might be a little late to hit it up. Any thoughts?

Also, I've only got a 9.8hp motor on my 14' jon boat. I know Lake Fork is substantial. Is that enough boat?

I'm completely open to other ideas for a road trip for good bass fishing if you can think of somewhere else that might be better for me. Especially if it's closer...

You can't go wrong with Fork or most other east Texas lakes for that matter.  There are plenty of places to launch and fish good areas with a small boat.  The last few years I've stayed at Fork, fished it and if the bite is slow or the wind is howling, I'll go to Quitman, Purtis Creek, Hollbrook, Athens, Winnesboro or a # of other smaller lakes in the area. ;)

I second Fork and the East Texas Lakes.  If you can afford 1 day with a guide I would recommend a call to Tom Redington or John Tanner.  Tom spent 2.5 days with my son and I and we had a ball, great teacher, attentive to fun. I've heard nothing but great things about John Tanner as well.  The guide will also give you places to fish, patterns and all that will help you plan your time on the lake by yourself.

I was there last week with my 21 ft fish and ski and wished that I would have trucked to other docks instead of worrying about crossing the lake to get to the boating lanes.  The one thing about 6 days with your son bass fishing, it's a win no matter what.  Have fun.
