But if I tell you where to go, then where am i supposed to fish?

Try some of the lakes tucked away in the national and state forests throughout wisconsin if you could drag a canoe or kayak to them, they would probably be good producers

If you're fairly north in that area I hear that the St. Croix River is pretty awesome for catching smallies.

That's a fact; if you can find the Never's landing area, launch and fish up river.

La Crosse anyone? Not sure how far west/north you are?  What city are you near?

Where's Wisconsin? Is it near Texas?

That would almost be funny if half of the people in this country actually knew their geography.  Everyone knows it's just west of Washington state. ;)

If you're in western WI, then it's going to be hard to beat the Mississippi River. Almost any pool from Redwing down to pool 13 can be excellent. It seems like the further north you are, the better the smallies, and as you head south the LMBs take over. The sweet stretch from the Onalaska pool down to Prairie DuChein has about an equal chance for LMBs and SMBs. The diversity of habitat on the river (from wingdams in current to massive, shallow, backwater pad fields) means you can just about always figure out something that's working that day. And the average size is as good or better than anything else in WI. Most tournaments take 5 fish in the high-teens to win, and bags over 20 lbs are not uncommon. I know that I'll be on the river a good percent of my weekends this summer.

I have to agree, in the summer months and fall, any of the numerous weed patches are excelant places to do some froggin. use braded line and hold on tight. ;)

Where are u in western Wi? I'm 40 miles north of Eau Claire in a small town called Chetek. The chetek chain is OK early in spring before the water gets green.

If u want to plan a great trip in Wi, try Chequamegon Bay in Ashland, the 2nd week of June. Smallies 4 to 6 lbs are common.

Welcome to the forums!  Years ago I fished Potato lakes more often than not; musky was the fish of choice in them days.  Stratford weighing in here.

Potato Lk. is still good for musky. I don't fish muskies as hard as I did years ago. I still love to fish em, but now I spend more time chasing smallies. Also, being a wisconsinite, can't pass up a good walleye bite.

I'm new to these forums, and just want to say thanks for the warm welcome and wish I would have found u guys sooner.

I heard the lakes up there finally thaw out around June.

This makes me hate you oh so much right now...  >;)

The Madison Chain of lakes produces a good number of Bass and good size as well.  Big Smallies can be found in Mendota as well as Largemouth...the other lakes mostly hold big Largemouth.
